  • Ben Kenobi made me rich!

    1187 USD to be exact.

    Thanks, Ben!

The historian in me quite like the random Hattin reference in that sum.

So BK gets banned ... Nikolai makes a lot of money soon after. Interesting...

Nikolai, I can ban a lot more people if you'd be willing to give me a cut of the action

              I'll bite.

How did he make you that money?

We chatted about South Africa, and I mentioned I had an old coin lying in a drawer from there.
He asked me what kind of coin, and I replied "A krugerrand I got from my gramps years ago."
He said "you know that coin is worth a lot?", whereby I said I doubted it, as my gramps are not that rich.

But he urged me to check the coin and compare the info with ebay and such to find the worth. So I did. I can tell you I got surprised when I found out the little bugger that had been lying in a drawer for the better worth of a decade, was sold in prime condition for betwen 1350 and 1450 USD!

So I called around to coin shops in my area, and today I sold it for almost 1200 USD. I really needed the money right now, so this was a godsend.

Good for you. But a bit surprising that you needed someone to tell you that an old gold coin could be valuable.

Eh, I figured it was worth something, but not this much. It's been just laying in a drawer, had forgot I had it until I mentioned it in that conversation. And as I said, my grandpa is not rich, so I was surprised.

It's an ounce of gold, so depending on when he got it, he might not have paid that much. Apparently the price of gold in 1973 was < $100/oz. Although I don't know how far a dollar went back in the days of disco, when hippies still roamed the earth.

Back in the late 60's you could buy a brand new Ford Mustang for under 3 grand. So 100 bucks was nothing to sneeze at.
My first car cost me 100 in the early 70's. (it wasn't a new ford mustang)
