THE 8TH ANNUAL APOLYTON OFF TOPIC DEAD POOL!

”I'm always relieved when someone is delivering a eulogy and I realise I'm listening to it.” – George Carlin

A friend of mine stopped smoking, drinking, overeating, and chasing women --all at the same time. It was a lovely funeral. – Unknown

This thread will serve as both the signup thread and the game thread.

Your submissions should be made by 11:59:59 PM EST December 31st, 2014. For late entries, see rule 4(a) in Game Rules below.

    Purpose
It has become usual to find an obituary thread in the Off Topic forum whenever a “celebrity” of note dies. Sometimes the thread takes a tone off profound sadness whereas other times it becomes a dancehall of smilies. Rather than pass some sort of judgment on the worth of the newly departed soul as the usual threads do, the Off Topic Dead Pool simply allows the site posters to demonstrate their ability to prognosticate and tell their fellow posters exactly what celebrities will die in the coming calendar year. This isn’t to encourage the death of someone or help it along in any way, but simply recognition that Death has His job to do and 2015, won’t be any exception.

It is acknowledged that this sort of entertainment is not for everyone. If it offends your sensibilities I apologize and understand if you choose not to participate. For those of you that are like us and have a somewhat ‘dark’ streak to their humor, this Pool is for you. Read the rules, pick your list of celebrities and sit back and see what 2015 will bring us.

    Game Rules
    1. All site members are eligible to participate.
    2. Any disputes will be discussed in the DP thread. A Judges Panel (ColdWizard) will arbitrate and rule on all disputes and verify eligibility of all list names. Decisions of this Panel are FINAL.
    3. Each player is to pick 25 different celebrities who they believe will be alive as of midnight 1st January 2015, but whom will no longer be “with us” by the end of 31st December 2015.
    a) These 25 names will be divided between a “Game List” of 20 names and a “Reserve List” of 5 names.
    b) The celebrity choices are to be “Ranked” in order of confidence (most likely to die at the top of the list – least likely at bottom).
    4. This list is to be sent by Private Message to ColdWizard for eligibility verification. DO NOT post your list in the thread. I will post the lists of all players at the start of the game in January. This prevents others from “poaching” your good picks. Only "late submissions" meeting the criteria below will be accepted after 31st December 2014.
    a) Late submissions will be accepted until January 7, 2015 under the following conditions:
    i) New players must submit a list of 20 unique (not picked in 2015) celebrities. Consult the list in the post below for a complete list of picked celebrities.
ii) Returning players may submit their old team with unique picks filling any openings created by 2014 (or earlier) deaths. New picks are added to the bottom of the player's Rank List. In the alternative - Returning players may create a new team as per clause 4 (a)(i).
iii) Any and all "unique" picks on a late submission team are ineligible for the Unique Pick Award (the "penalty" for a late submission).
iv) All picks must be eligible (i.e. Still alive) as of team submission. Any returning player picks that may die prior to submission are removed from the team list and may be filled by a new "unique" pick.
    5. The Panel Judge will examine all list names for eligibility (see Rule 22). In the event a celebrity is ruled ineligible, a replacement, if available, will be moved up from the player’s Reserve List.
    6. The Panel Judge will not determine if the submitted celebrity is currently alive. If you choose someone that is already dead you will be stuck with that celebrity on your list unless you notice and report the error prior to January 1st, 2015. If you still have available celebrities from your Reserve List one will be moved up to replace the already deceased choice prior to the start of the Pool.
    7. If one of your picks dies after selections are submitted but before the beginning of game play at the start of the year, the top name on your Reserve List will move up to the bottom of your Game List. If a celebrity does jump the gun and die before the official start of the game it is the responsibility of the player to report the early death to the Panel Judge no later than January 2nd 2015.
    8. If one (or more) of your picks are ruled “Ineligible” by the Panel Judge, celebrity names from you Reserve List, if available, will be moved up to your Game List.
    9. You may only enter The Apolyton Off Topic Dead Pool once per year.
    10. Points will be awarded for each celebrity that you accurately predicted would die in 2015. Points will be awarded according to the formula in Rule 15.
    11. Celebrity deaths are to be reported by the players in the Dead Pool thread (one report will suffice for all). I don’t have the time or inclination to keep track of everybody’s list. If someone on your list dies it is your duty to claim your points. NOTE: A link to an obit of some kind is required (see Rule 23b). This link must be in English.
    12. All deaths are to be reported by 7th January 2016 (to allow for any delay in media reporting). This will be the official closing day for awarding points.
    13. I'll update the thread periodically, and post an up-to-date scoreboard.
    14. At the end of the year the poster with the most points will be declared the winner. Duh.
    15. When an eligible celebrity on your list dies points will be awarded according to the following formula:

    Points = (171 - Rank) + (100 – age) + Bonus

    16. Rank points - The higher a player Ranks their pick the more points that pick will be worth. Be careful to order your list from most likely to least likely to perish sometime in 2015 if you want to make the most of their loss.
    17. In addition, bonus points will be awarded when a death meets the following criteria:
    a) Unique Pick Award: +25 points if you were the only player to pick that celebrity.
    b) Unlucky 13 Award: +10 points for a celebrity who dies on the 13th of any month.
    c) Unnatural Causes Award: +20 points for murder, suicide or accident.
    d) Party Pooper Award: +25 points for any celebrity rude enough to die on their birthday or Christmas Day.
    e) First Blood Award: +25 points for the first celebrity to die in 2015.
    f) You Can’t Cheat Death Award: +25 points for the last celebrity to die in 2015.
    g) The Daily Double: +50 points awarded to any player who has two celebrities on their roster die on the same day.
    h) The Hat Trick: +75 points awarded to any player who has three celebrities on their roster die over the course of one week (any 7-day span).
    i) The Grand Slam: +100 points awarded to any player who has four (or more) celebrities on their roster die in the same month (any 30-day span).
    j) The Empty Casket Award: +50 points awarded at the end of the year to the player who had the longest "dry spell" between deaths.
    k) The Killing Spree Award: +50 points to the player with the most consecutive hits. In the event of a tie the points will be divided equally.

    18. The official date/time of any celebrity death is measured in the time zone that the celebrity is in when they die.
    19. In the event of a dead heat on points at the closing of the 2015 Dead Pool, the winner will be selected according to the following criteria, applied in this order:
    a) The player with most correctly chosen deceased celebrities.
    b) The player with the youngest average age of correct predictions.
    20. If a celebrity who has passed on has more than one reported age the final decision will rest with the Panel Judges. Past precedent indicates the “oldest” birth date (fewer points) will be used when an accurate date cannot be determined.
    21. a) You may not go out and “help yourself” win. Basically, you cannot kill someone on your list to give yourself more points. any list. The penalty for violating this rule, in addition to any criminal charges brought upon you by the appropriate authorities, is a lifetime ban from the Off Topic Dead Pool.
    b) You may not kill any of the other players (see paragraph a) above)
    22. CELEBRITY ELIGIBILITY:
    a) All of your chosen celebrities must be Human (no animals or concepts).
    b) Apolyton site members, staff and family members are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN as list picks.
    c) No minors may be chosen (at least 16 years old as at 1st January 2015). Waiting for a child to die would stretch what little amount of taste resides in this game.
    d) Selections must be actual “real-life” people, not characters out of soap operas and the like.
    e) The celebrity must be a named individual, not just "Pope Wotsisface".
    f) Sorry, but no death row inmates may be chosen. If a celebrity dies while in prison, but not because of a state-sponsored execution, (killed in a prison riot by a fellow prisoner, suicide, etc.) that death will count for points. Those sent to death row after January 1st, 2015 are eligible for the remainder of the year (still subject to Rule 22-g below- This would be a remote possibility).
    g) People charged with capital crimes are ineligible. Murderers who've gotten away (OJ Simpson), murderers still skirting justice and murderers not sentenced to death (Charles Manson) are eligible. Run-of-the-mill murderers don't count.
    h) People who are hostages as of January 1st, 2015 are not eligible picks.
    i) No accused terrorists. They are a dime a dozen and their deaths are usually impossible to verify (drone strikes and such).
    j) No Porn Stars. While some porn stars may have achieved enough crossover fame to be considered celebrities, most have not. To avoid any arguments, I am therefore forbidding all of them.
    k) Celebrities or people undergoing experimental medical treatment involving artificial vital organs or animal part implants are not eligible. Pacemakers are all right (Dick Cheney is still eligible).
    l) No celebrity may be named more than once on your list.
    m) A celebrity must be “famous” in his or her own right – family members of celebrities do not count unless they too have their own fame. Exception: All present and former “First Ladies” still alive are eligible to be chosen.
    n) No illness/dying celebrities (commonly referred to as the “Terry Shiavo Rule”). That is, someone whose claim to fame IS their illness or dying. This rule also covers people who are not famous for anything save being members of a suicide cult, etc.
    o) No person whose only claim to being a celebrity is being old may be chosen.
    23. DEFINITIONS:
    a) "Celebrity" means someone who, upon their death, gets a written obituary in a major, mainstream media news website. A good rule of thumb is “Celebrity = Name Recognition.” The Judges Panel should be able to look at the name and say “Oh, I know who that is,” without any prompting from the player. The Judges Panel should at least be able to find many references to the individual with a cursory online search.
    b) "Obituary" simply means an article that mentions the fact that the person has died. It doesn't have to be the conventional biographical write-up.
    c) "Alive" means drawing breath, not decomposing, that kind of thing.
    d) “Dead” means dead. No irreversible coma, no vegetables. To qualify as dead, there must be an actual corpse. The death of a career doesn't count.
    24. PRIZE: The player with the most points at the end of the year will gain nothing more than the glory and distinction of being the best at reading the tea leaves and determining where Death was most likely to strike in 2015.

A frozen corpse is still a corpse. However, should he be revived, he will once again become an eligible candidate and the date of revival will be used as his new date of birth. However, barring unforeseen circumstances, he will not be considered a minor for the purposes of the Pool.

Peter Underwood, prolific author and anthologist :

Peter Underwood, who has died aged 91, was the author of more than 50 books on ghost-hunting and the paranormal, including the Dictionary of the Supernatural (1978), The Ghosts of Borley (1973, with Paul Tabori) and Where the Ghosts Walk (2013), and was one of Britain’s greatest authorities on hauntings. He brought honesty and challenge to any discussion of the subject, once saying: “I have long thought that 98% of reported hauntings have a natural and mundane explanation, but it is the other 2% that have interested me.”

For two decades he was president of the Ghost Club, and was later life president of the Ghost Club Society and president of the Unitarian Society for Psychical Studies. There was the whiff of the detective about Underwood and it was not surprising that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s daughter Jean usually introduced him as “the Sherlock Holmes of psychical research”.

Peter Underwood was in no doubt about the reality of ghosts and attended many seances and exorcisms

He was born in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, son of Eli Underwood, a metalworker who founded a small chain of hardware stores, and his wife, Edith (nee Baldwin), the daughter of a prosperous farmer. Peter was educated by a tutor and at a local private school.

His interest in “the other population” took root early. His maternal grandparents lived at Rose Hall, Sarratt, Hertfordshire, a mill that was said to be haunted, and Underwood was fascinated by the idea. “People called at the house and asked whether they could see the haunted room,” he told the BBC. “My grandmother would ask me to show them and tell them the ghost story – which I did very much tongue in cheek.” He began to take notes of ghost stories he heard and then to seek out people who claimed to have experienced ghosts, “but little did I think that much of my life would be spent studying ghosts and haunted houses.”

His military service, in the Suffolk Regiment, during the second world war, was curtailed in 1942 by illness, but he retained a deep interest in visiting old battle and airfields. Before the war, he had joined Dent, the publishers, in Letchworth, and at its end he moved to the firm’s London offices. In 1947 he joined the Society for Psychical Research and in 1951 helped revive the Ghost Club, founded in 1862, becoming its president in 1960. In 1971 he decided to leave Dent to devote himself full-time to paranormal research.

Over the years, Underwood probably heard more first-hand ghost stories than anybody else in the world. His Gazetteer of British Ghosts (1971) attempted to compile a comprehensive list of reported hauntings in the UK. He was present at many seances, exorcisms and experiments in precognition, clairvoyance and hypnotism. In 1973 The Ghosts of Borley was published, about the rectory in Essex reputed to be the most haunted house in Britain, and the case with which Underwood’s name was most often associated. The strange sights and sounds reported at Borley were investigated several times over the years, including by the BBC. Underwood was also a co-author of The Borley Rectory Companion (2009).

Underwood had no doubt about the reality of ghosts. In a debate held last year in Cornwall, What Is a Ghost?, he had this to say: “What we call ghosts means different things to different people. Some of them are spirits of dead individuals. These may be ghosts that some people appear able to contact and communicate with. But not all ghosts fall into that category. And there are different reported ghosts and ghostly happenings that leave their mark on rooms or furniture.”

In his autobiography, No Common Task: The Autobiography of a Ghost Hunter (1983), he wrote: “Oh, is there life after death, you ask? Well, to tell you the truth I don’t know, but I do know that to live in the hearts and memories of those we leave behind is not to die.” Underwood had just started a second volume of his memoirs. It would have made fascinating reading. He had met and known people as different as Dennis Wheatley and Colin Wilson, Dennis Bardens, a fellow ghost-hunter and the first editor of Panorama, and Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, who published as Q. And he expertly captured the aura of haunted locations.

Peter had long been intrigued, too, by the mystery of the Jack the Ripper murders, and was an avid collector of publications on the subject. He brought together wide-ranging material to do with the crimes in Jack the Ripper – One Hundred Years of Mystery (1987). He was a prolific broadcaster and made guest appearances on shows from Start the Week to The Big Breakfast. In 1975 he featured in the BBC series The Ghost Hunters. He continued writing and researching to the end of his life.

In 1944 he married Joyce (nee Davey) and for many happy years they lived at Bentley in Hampshire. Joyce died in 2003. Underwood is survived by his son, Chris, and daughter, Pamela, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

                  • Peter Underwood, author and investigator, born 16 May 1923; died 26 November 2014
Expert on the paranormal who wrote more than 50 books on ghost-hunting and the supernatural

                  Nick Talbot/Gravenhurst, singer/songwriter & producer :

Nick Talbot, who has died unexpectedly aged 37, was a singer, songwriter and producer who performed as Gravenhurst. His four albums for Warp Records between 2000 and 2012 – especially The Ghost in Daylight (2012) – brought him critical acclaim and a worldwide cult following. Talbot delved deeper than most songwriters: he said that he sought to find romance in the grimier side of life, and his work journeyed into the dark heart of the human condition – he even sang about Auschwitz – to create music of humbling beauty.

However, onstage he could be hilarious. An outward misanthropy concealed a warm and engaging character with a huge intellect, prone to expounding on anything from Jack the Ripper to his unlikely obsession with the heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

In 2013, John Doran, editor of the website the Quietus, suggested Talbot should channel his literary gifts into writing articles for the Quietus and so he began a second notable career as a journalist. Talbot secured an interview with the philosopher John Gray, whom Doran had pursued unsuccessfully for years. The interview developed into a marathon tea at the Savoy hotel in London that lasted many hours, to the exasperation of the waiters, who needed the table. The pair’s deep philosophical discussion continued as they were escorted from the hotel.

The son of Peter, a gardener, and Mercia (nee Collett), a receptionist, music fanatic and former child actor, Talbot was born in Epsom, into what he called “the only Labour-voting family in Surrey”. He described his early years as blissful, but was later visited by bouts of melancholy that he poured into music. He graduated in 2000 with a first in philosophy from the University of Bristol, having been drawn to the city’s DIY music scene. Finding himself living in unexpected splendour in a large, shared Georgian house, he decided to “make the most of it” and began writing songs in earnest.

His first band, the shoegaze outfit Assembly Communications, ended in 1999 when their bassist Luke Gale was killed in a traffic accident. His death was the subject (along with Talbot’s own epilepsy) of the Gravenhurst song Hopechapel Hill. Talbot’s first, self-released album, Internal Travels (2002), highlighted his acoustic guitar virtuosity, but a move to grimier eastern Bristol saw his music become “darker and noisier”. He found a supportive label in Warp and, on albums such as Flashlight Seasons (2004) and The Western Lands (2007), added additional musicians and electronics, developing what he called “sonic folk”. Wider recognition beckoned when his song Nicole featured in Shane Meadows’s acclaimed film This Is England (2006).

Although Talbot often fretted that he didn’t have his father’s work ethic, his considerable output included other musical projects, Bronnt Industries Kapital and Heterotic, remixes and an original soundtrack for the German film Ein Freund von Mir (2006). He also co-founded the Bristol label Silent Age. He supplemented his income with copywriting and lecturing at the Bristol Institute of Modern Music, and ran an online comic, Ultraskull, and a lively blog, The Police Diver’s Notebook.

A few days before Talbot’s death, Warp reissued Flashlight Seasons and the 2004 mini-album Black Holes in the Sand, as well as releasing a new collection, Offerings: Lost Songs, 2000-2004. A European tour was under way: Talbot played his last concerts in Rome and Ravenna, Italy.

In 2003 Talbot married Erin Hensley – who inspired the song For Erin. They divorced in 2006 but remained on good terms. He is survived by his parents, and two brothers, Paul and Sean.

                  Oops.

Sorry, stick 'em in the other thread. Was too busy still laughing at the 'Anaconda' fart remix.
