  • Laser cannon story that's brilliant for two reasons

After seven years and $40 million of development, the US Navy has finally sent its prototype laser weapon, one capable of blowing holes clean through UAVs, on patrol throughout the disputed Persian Gulf.

    1- Feckin' laser cannons.

2- The US named a ship "Ponce".

This is kinda old news, IIRC this ship and its laser were deployed about a year ago. USS Ponce is named after Ponce, Puerto Rico, fyi. But yes, very cool
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I wonder what made them choose that ship, out of all their choices, to put something sparkly and faaaaabulous on?

They put new stuff like that on a mostly harmless ship that would not be targeted by anyone because they are afraid to have to use it in a real battle.

The ship is too old to be useful for anything but a testbed, but it can still sail, and it's big enough that it can power a laser.

So it is now one of the most powerful ships we have.

The laser can shoot down small airplanes in good weather. Just like all of our ships. Only difference here is that this one can use a laser to do it instead of one of these dudes:

A laser cannon is more awesome.

I don't disagree, but you said more powerful, not more awesome.

Not quite. It is old will but is also a fully loaded part of the amphibious group in the area. What she does have is lots of room to house new gear such as this without affecting her primary mission (unlike our crowded packed to the gills surface combatants) and being at the end of her life we don't have to worry about the follow on effects of modifying her for too long.
