  • Trekkers, walkers, and all foot perverts, any epic routes?

So I just walked 48 km, and that's a bit over 29 miles for you non-metric people. It was quite OK, even a bit fun, the only thing that took a bit of a beating was my heels... I didn't tape them at all, just put on socks and didn't even change them once. In retrospect, not smart. I know better, but hey, such is life.

In any case, there was a TV crew involved and I pitched an idea, what if I walked to Santiago De Compostela from Finland as kind of a catharsis from all that's happened in the near past. And to show anything is possible no matter what dire situation you find yourself in.

So they got a bit interested in it and we'll talk about it next week and see if we'll pitch for a mini-series documentary type of a thing. Even if not, I'll make the trip regardless. SO if they ditch the idea, what other great routes there are to be experienced on foot? I have no idea. THey don't HAVE to be thousands of miles but it does not really matter either.

The Trans Canada Trail is about 23,000 kilometres from Atlantic to Pacific. I don't think anyone has walked the entire length. I've walked through Whiteshell Provincial Park, maybe 50 km.

I think I'd fly to Spain and just hike one of the pilgrim trails rather than walk from northern Europe in the winter.

...or France, or Italy, or Englandia... I think most Euronations have pilgrim routes.

Thought this was going to be a Star Trek thread.

                    Sorry

Sava, absolutely! I think I can get it on TV anyhow, in some way. A friend of mine who is a TV/movie director commented that this would definitely make it. The story itself is good enough. And message of hope, survival and making it is always interesting for sponsors.

I'd probably have at least 4 sponsors I know already, of which 2 would provide gear for the trip and prepare me to walk and physical conditioning, and 2 would give money for the cause (research or ward somewhere... a worthy cause anyway, we wouldn't take a dime, but I'd keep the shoes and knowledge, blisters and memories).

In any case, I think I can make it happen. It's a question of how, whne and with who. I have to consider how long the walk takes, I can't be too long away from my children at this point. I'd need to arrange that somehow, like fly the kids to some check points for a couple of days and spend time with them, or something like that.

While doing it for charity is always admirable, I would consider having part of the proceeds set aside towards a college fund for the kids. (just in case anything happens to you in the future)
I don't think anyone would begrudge you that.

that's correct rah, but I'm already leaving thme with a nice amount... I'm fairly well off these days. I'm not rich, but I am well off. I'm leaving a house for the kids. I think that should set them for a good start. They can sell this, or live in this for free. Or first live free and then sell it. They'll live off of that for at least a decade both if they don't grow to be idiots. In fact I should hire someone to help them manage the fund.

Things can always change. Take no chances with your children. (not that I think you would)

Well 10 miles is a long walk in itself. Good shoes go for a long way. Bad shoes and my feet are dead in 10 miles. I remember we had to do this 30 km semi run thing in the army and my feet were so damaged it wasn't fun. Just blisters, puss and blood. Bad shoes, asphalt, running with a full pack most of that sunny day. It's all about how you take it. Our feet can't take it, really. Just push through the pain but don't be stupid. Clean feet, clean socks, good shoes help.
