  • Could WW1 have been averted?

What if Franz Ferdinand and his wife had not been killed 100 years ago? Would WW1 have been averted or would there have, inevitably, been another cause of war which would have resulted in an equally disastrous global war?

Sure, maybe if Carthage had conquered Rome, then Germany, France, the UK, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy and the Ottoman Empire wouldn't have existed.

They were all just desperate to take a pop at each other. It was always going to happen.

It was inevitable. A world without the First World War would be very different, as much of Europe were monarchies before and during the war.

I don't think that ferdidan's murder was the cause for WW1 as much as I don't believe beautiful helen was the cause for the troy war

WW1 was the death of European dominance of the world.

Another interesting question is if there was not a WW1 would there now be an independent Ireland or would it be, in its entirety, be a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

I think the great powers of the time could have averted WWI. Even after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, I don't think it was inevitable. With more good faith diplomacy and different reactions from the various parties, WWI doesn't have to start in July. However, I do think it was extremely likely to happen in or 1914.

I think one of the most interesting POD would be for Frederick III not to have died from cancer and lived to an old age like his father and son. If he had of reigned with liberal policies until 1914 things may have been very different in Europe.

Democracy would have to shut down completely, economic depravity reach endless hights, unemployment stay at high levels, and even then it would be civil war not hitler because there're a lot of people that simply don't like him.
