  • more good news!

Fred Phelps, the one-time leader of the infamous "GOD HATES FAGS" church, is on his deathbed in Kansas. Hopefully, you can carry on with your day having learned of this terrible news.

Phelps' son Nathan, who left the church in 1980 and now lives in Canada working on behalf of LGBT rights, posted on Facebook late last night that his father is dying in a hospice in Topeka.

I didn't know Canada hates gays.

        No. Canada just hates you.

Now would be a good time to show some of the dignity and grace that that group have never shown others.

Phelps is a pretty despicable person, but I'm not glad he's dying. I'd much rather he change his mind and live a productive, non-gay-hating life.

Actually, someone shared an interesting thought on Facebook.

Phelps may have ironically helped gay people to gain greater acceptance as human beings, through his despicable, wretched actions and behavior.

I don't think it's appropriate to cheer the death of an 84-year-old - that's like saying "huzzah, he only got to be an awful person for 84 years - this proves that there's justice in the world." (Or however long it was that he was an awful person - he may have been a fairly benign toddler for all I know. Let's say that he was an awful person for 64 years, which is still a lot of awfulness.)

That's about how long he's run that church.

I'm cheering the fact that he won't get to see 85.

But you've got to brainwash people into believing that Christians believe "god hates fags," so you won't shut up about him even after his death.

Agreed. I have never seen the point in celebrating something we will all face in the end.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
