Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Nicely done, guys.

I tried for the early Apostolic Palace victory, but for some reason just couldn't pull it off. Recovering from that took me much longer than I wanted for the space race victory.

My N19 Strategy Inflate your Upload Space

Since I was fortunate enough to come in 1st place for the N19 game, I though I'd share how I played through this game with everyone.

First I'll say that the only thing I didn't like about this game was having two leaders named Gilgamesh. I'm OK with having two AI Civs with the same nationality, but IMO, one of the Sumerian leaders should have been renamed, or else use a Civ with multiple leaders, such has having two Egypts, with Hatshepsut and Rameses has the Leaders. My reason for this is because when Hannibal comes along and demands that you stop trading with Gilgamesh, you don't have a way to ask Hannibal, did you mean Gilgamesh the Orange or Gilgamesh the Purple.

Since Saladin is Spiritual and Protective, I decided from the start to try for a Cultural or Religious victory. I settled in place, and got 69 Gold from the Goody Hut in the city radius. My initial build order in Mecca was...

Warrior
Worker (city size had increased to 2)
Warrior
Settler
Barracks (whipped: 1 population saved 4 turns)
Archer
Archer
Settler (whipped: 1 population saved 3 turns)

Built 2nd city, Medina, about 5E of Mecca to claim a Copper resource. With a Copper Mine and some irrigated plains tiles, this made a pretty good production city.

Built 3rd city, Damascus, about 5N of Mecca (on same river) to claim Elephant/Ivory and Spice resources. I eventually built some cottages on the flood plains around the city, which, paired with the improved resources, made Damascus a pretty good science city.

Since your first 3 cities are usually your top 3 culture cities, I tried to build any world wonders in these 3 cities to assist in a cultural victory. As best as I can remember, these are the world wonders I built in this game...

Mecca
The Oracle
The Apostolic Palace
Shwedagon Paya
The Spiral Minaret

The Temple of Artemis (in Medina)
The Great Library (in Damascus)

I eventually won a religious/diplomatic victory, but had a good start on a cultural victory with these 3 cities. I was able to found 4 religions in this game, and each of these cities was a holy city, which also helped with their culture (Hinduism in Mecca, Judaism in Medina, Christianity in Damascus, Islam in Baghdad).

I wound up founding 4 more cities, and captured 3 barbarian cities, so had 10 cities when I won the game.

Only had one short war with Hannibal, he tried to capture one of the barbarian cities I had captured, but I managed to defeat his forces and keep the city.

After building The Apostolic Palace, I tried to spread the Palace religion to the other civs ASAP. Took a long time to get Open Borders with Hammurabi, and I initially gifted a Missionary to Hatshepsut, but she never used it to spread the religion, so I had to send a 2nd missionary into Egypt and spread it myself.

The game won't call for a religious leader victory if you have enough votes to vote yourself in, so I was running the Free Religion civic when spreading the religion to the last few Civs. When the vote came, I voted for myself and immediately switched to the Pacifism civic. I think this would have given me enough votes to win by myself but, if I remember correctly, both Gilgameshs and Cyrus also voted for me in the election.

Had to go out of town for a couple of weeks, so I'm behind in getting the N20 game started, but will try and get that one in before the deadline.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Great info Hokiemon!!!

My apologies about the duplicate leader. I constructed this game late at night after a long hard week at work. I guess that glaringly obvious mistake slipped through the net...........
