What is Candle'Bre?
The quick answer to that question is: 'Candle'Bre is a turn based strategy game based in a medieval fantasy world.' Which doesn't tell us very much at all, so lets break that one-line answer down a bit.
Seeing as this forum is hosted by the Apolyton.net Civilization site, I'm going to assume that 'turn based strategy game' is pretty self explanatory! Which leaves us with the medieval part, which is probably best explained by this:
quote:
Candle'Bre is a world not unlike Earth....well, okay, so it IS unlike Earth in a few important ways. Imagine what the Earth might have been like about 1000 years ago if all the fairy tales and legends had been true. That's the world of Candle'Bre.

We're not looking at the vast sweep of time and technological advancement found in Sid Meier's Civilization. Neither are we looking at an 'Orcs versus Elves' style of fantasy game. Instead we have a Kingdom in conflict on many different levels. A kingdom torn apart by civil war. A kingdom in which the old wisdoms and old ways of doing things are being challenged. A kingdom in which the peasantry are just beginning to question of the authority of the Church and the rule of the nobility. A kingdom where the nobility and indeed the very Church are divided as to the path that should be taken. Throw in just a dash of sorcery and a generous amount of diplomacy, plotting, intrigue and friends-in-low-places and we get a Kingdom which is ripe with all sorts of gaming potential!
Most importantly, Candle'Bre will be a kingdom which is as richly detailed and immersive as we can make it. Why do we think this is so important?
A word from Vel:
quote:
Yeah yeah, I like building up cities and optimizing kingdoms and smashing enemy armies, but those things cannot exist in a vacuum. True, to a point, I make my own story as I play, but the world existed before I came along, and will continue on without me after I’ve gone…so give me the scoop on it! Setting and background is very important. For that matter, details are very important. Details are like salt. Pretty easy thing to do without…you won’t die if you don’t get to put salt on your fries, but they sure make ‘em taste better!
One of my all time favorite computer games is SMAC/X, and atmosphere and story has a lot to do with why.

Thats why.
If you like what you've read so far and want to find out more about the world of Candle'Bre, then
this thread is a good place to start. This is the core of the game. Beyond that, we'll be actively looking for player feedback to help us expand and build upon the core. To provide input on new features and to help work them up to the stage where we can hand them over to the coding team. To argue over, beat flat and then knock back into shape any of our ideas!
For a look at the kind of discussions we've had so far, check out some of these threads.
The Acts of Fate
A basic and advanced economic model.
Some ideas and more ideas for diplomacy and espionage.
A discussion about combat, a proposed system for the early game builds and a more detailed tactical model.
Some thoughts about magic.
Finally, if you're curious as to how this whole idea began, take a look at this thread!
Welcome to Candle'Bre – we hope you enjoy it.
