Apolyton Civilization Site: "10 Years of Conquering the World"
 Ten years ago today, Apolyton Civilization Site ( ACS) began as a joint venture between myself, Daniel "DanQ" Quick, and Markos Giannopoulos as a result of the merger of our respective Civilization II (as well as my original Civ) fansites. As ACS' Chief Owner/Administrator now, I am pleased with the work that our staff -- past and present -- and community have accomplished but there is room for improvement and more to do still.
Thanks also to our partners past and present in the gaming industry for their contributions to our endeavour. To those advertisers with whom we have maintained or left on good relations, and those who have been able to directly support the financial operation of this site through means such as our optional subscription service, we say thank you as well. On behalf of the ACS administration of myself, Wouter "Locutus" Snijders, Ming, rah and Solver, and the rest of our staff, I welcome you to leave your supportive and reflective messages about the first decade of this Civ fansite and community. May there be many more to come!

Some stats:
96890 users in the database. Out of those, 25977 or 26.8% have posted on the forums. The number of valid accounts is 21973, meaning accounts that are currently able to post.
We have 39 minimods, who are modding a demogame or some other smaller area, 22 people with staff member status (may or may not include mod powers) and 5 admins.
This year, we have had 2854 total registrations, out of which roughly 2160 or 75% are valid. Out of the people registered this year, 367 or 12% have posted.
This month so far, we have had 271 registrations, out of which 49 people have posted, making it 18%.
In total, 2647 users, or 2.7% of all users, have 100 posts or more, 1144 or 1.1% have 500 posts or more and 745 people or or 0.7% of all users have 1000 posts or more.

I remember following a link from Allard(Allen?) Hosfelt's civII site where I got my images to mod my civII game from. 1st time in Sept of 1998, 2nd time in Nov., when I finally registered. There were some early heavy flame wars in November and December, that fizzled out mainly by the intervention of one particular Orcus, who few likely remember now. It was a very small community at the time and everyone knew everyone. It's inspiring to see how much it has grown and persevered over the last decade.
But yeah, it's Hosfelt's fault I'm here. So blame him. And Happy Birthday Poly. May you have many more.

There are websites that conquer all others in a span on a few years then suddenly burn out into nothingness.
There are websites that copy other successful ones images, but have moar fanbase and popularity and youth.
There are websites that struggle for years and fall apart into obscurity, as brilliant as they may have been in their time.
But RARELY is there a website that survives for an entire decade of growth, change, and pain and live to tell others: "get ready for another 10."
