The Smell of Smoke in the Woods
After many years a wander, the survivors of the great battle for Mythical Troia, having been driven from their birth shores, awake to a new horizon. Aeneas of House Lupus was tired. He escaped the temptations and dangers of the barbary shores once too many. He took to scouting the surrounding lands by himself years ago, but this time out, there was something different. The lands seemed to yield to his path as if by choice. Welcoming.

He crossed a creek leading to a larger river, clambered up the bank and stumbled upon a small clearing. In the center of the clearing sat a Wolf. The Wolf was feeding her young, a pair of small but very active young pups. The Wolf was unthreatened and one of the pups came up to Aeneas and boldly sniffed the weary leader. Aeneas, born in the sign of the Wolf felt what he had been looking for. A sense of home.

The people gathered around when he returned to the camp. Aeneas raised his hands for attention. "Rome", he bellowed, "our new home."

I announce the founding of Constantinople. The Great City of the World. The Meeting Point between East and West. All are welcome to come to learn and trade.

I am Constantine, Founder of the Byzantine Empire
Βασιλεύς Βασιλέων Βασιλεύων Βασιλευόντων
(which for those Barbarians unlearned in the language of the Greeks, translates as 'King of Kings Reigning over those who Rule'.)

The stories were passed down through the generations of the wandering tribes. For thousands of years they roamed.

The ancients told of the time the tribe did gather and a young man named Korzan did upset the elders and was expelled from the tribe for thinking differently to the elders.

Korzan took with him his brothers and sisters and their mates and children.

Korzan did walk many miles till he found a place he felt was RIGHT. So it came to pass that Korzan and his family did settle and became the first of a new tribe to be known as the Korzans.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Editors note: Over the next centuries this name changed as the "Z" became silent so they were then known as Korans. This too later reformed to become Koreans. But that is much later in the history of this people.

In the beginning when man was still young and the gods cared not of man’s
fait, the world was ruled by creatures from the darkness. These creatures,
who where once human souls who became corrupted over time, fed on the
flesh of men in order to quench their everlasting hunger. Hundreds of years
passes and more and more of these creatures, who where called hollows,
appeared and it seemed that the more men that where killed by these hollows
the more of them would appear. Then one of them changed, he felt pity for
man and vowed to protect them.

A war for mans very existence began and the Hollow, who called himself
Drego Pendragon, along with three others who joined him began to take a
more human appearance. For years they fought and killed their own kind but
to no avail. The Hollows had become too many in number and the four
defenders where too few. It was then when all hope seemed to be lost that
one of the gods came to the aid of man. The goddess Britannia gave man the
knowledge to create cities and said to them, “Build a city to protect your
selves.”

Man did as instructed and built a city near a long flowing river. Then she
came down again but this time spoke to the Hollows that protected
man. “You have all fought for so long and so hard to protect these men from
your own brethren and now only one last sacrifice is needed.” Drego
Pendragon bowed before Britannia and said, “Ask of us what you will and we
shale do.” She looked and him and said, “You are the strongest of all and the
first to help these people. It is because your love for man that you have
changed into man and now your love will forever protect these people from
the Hollows.” She placed her hand on his head and he vanished into the
earth. The others yelled out, “What did you do to him!” She looked at them
and said, “Worry not his body was sacrificed but his soul will forever live on
watching over his these people like a guardian until the time comes that he is
needed once more.” They looked down with a sad expression on their faces.

“What do we do now?” one said. Britannia’s eyes glowed and she said, “You
three are now the defenders of these people but more then that you are the
messages of this story. Go now tell others what happened here today,
protect the city at all costs, and prepare for what may yet come. This seal is
only temporary and once the creatures become like you are now they may
come back to bring darkness upon all.” With that warning she vanished and
an orange light spread forth as a protective barrier.

Upon hearing the story the people rejoiced. They where so thank full to the
three defenders that they allowed them to name the city. Thus the first city
was named Pendragon and the Holy Empire of Britannia was born.

His Most Glorious Sultan of the Ottoman Empire relays the following;

It is with great honor that I present to you all this dish of Turkish Delight as a symbol of friendship and goodwill to all men. For those that chew with precision, respect, and pace, it will be a treat, for those that chew with disregard to it's symbolism and do so in a hurried manner, it will get stuck in your teeth. Today marks a day like none other and in as such, I must get an early night's sleep.

The Sultan has retired for the evening, please enjoy yourselves in his absence.

Korzan passes
The mighty leader Korzan lived many a long year and passed away, leaving his people to honour him by naming their new vilalge after him. The vilalge stood on the banks of the Great River and only a short walk to the Salty Waters.

Korzans last orders were for his people to send a band of their finest to explore the land around the new city and to report back their findings.

So it begins...
Little Meni, five years old, looked up to his mother.
"What are you doing, little one?", she said.
"Playing with stones..", he muttered, working his chisel on the limestone in front of him.
"That looks nice, what is it?"
Meni picked up the bit of stone, and looked at it from several angles.
"It's going to be a pear, for Amid", he said, staring intently at the object.
"But Meni, cats don't like pears," his mother said, ruffling his hair, "and look, your edges are much to sharp now, a pear is more round. And there's not supposed to be any writing on pears."
"No, it's a pear! For Amid!", he said, chiseling away.
His mother looked at him, smiling. She looked away, to the nice view they had of Memphis and the river. She patted the boy on his head again and walked away.

Amid, the cat, walked up to Meni, thinking of food, sleep and female cats in heat.
Meni reached out to Amid.
"Here, a pear, Amid."

Korta Kandu led his people across the land in search of a new place to settle. The tribal turmoil in the homeland had brought dissension to the people and many gathered there belongings to search for a new start. The people traveled for weeks living off the land until one day they crossed the mountains to see a beautiful sight. With the blue water in the distance and fertile grasslands rolling from the foothills, Korta Kandu knew his people had found a new home. Marching through the foothills, Korta Kandu spotted a river and in the crook of the river was a beautiful clearing for which to begin a new life.

Finally we've managed to cross the white mountains, reached the land where we can rest safely and we shall run no longer from our enemies- as it was promised by Sha'tur, the god of night, the protector of our tribe, the god who manifested himself to us and guides his people since then.
I still remeber that day when Sha'tur first spoke to us. I was a child, my father was the chief that time. The Gods untill then only appeared before our shamans but one day when our chief shaman held the ususal sacrificial ceremony a strange light surrounded him and when it was gone he was no longer the man he was, but spoke to us as Sha'tur, the god of night himself. He said he came to us because we were in great danger and He would protect us if we follow him and accept his guidance.
Now by the will of the Gods, I, Chetan, lead our people. I will claim this land and build a city as the god king wishes. We are safe now, but Sha'tur warns us: Our enemies might return someday.. and we must be prepared.

Archeology 101- The Koreans
It was only 40 years ago that the first dig occured at the mouth of the Rambalbi River. It was here that archeologists did discover that there had been a civilisation before our own. Amazingly they found the ruins of ancient city. amongst the ruins they found all sorts of artifacts and at one site did discover what must have been an ancient meeting place. It ws amongst these ruins that ancient drawings were found that took over 20 years to decipher.

From these drawings it became apparent that the inhabitants of this ancient place had met other peoples. They didnt have a name for these other people, they were jsut drawn to be much smaller than the orignal inhabitants, but it was learnt that these other people did teach our ancestors something whci was hidden for centuries, how to use the brown stuff on the city border.

I sat on guard on the hill looking down on the gathering of the seven elders. There was the great ceremonial fire (seven council fires) in the centre of the camp throwing flames and sparks into the night air. Around the fire sat ‘Slow Bull’, ‘Snow Owl’, ‘Big Eagle’, ‘Little Thunder’ (yes you guess right ), ‘Touch the Clouds’, ‘Spotted Tail’ and ‘Walking Buffalo’.
Off to the side, at the smaller fires, the womenfolk were cooking frybreads, corn and beans and roasting sides of bison and beaver and whole deer. The smells were irresistable. The womenfolk were chatting and trading clothes and beads and stones and tales.

I could see our own tribe’s tents scattered nearby and those of our blood relatives spread out, roughly close to the tent of their tribal chief. There was a great family/ tribal atmosphere. The boys were playing shooting arrows and tracking, the girls were playing wigwam making, gathering plants, and making pottery animals.

But directly below at the ‘Pow Wow’, the elders were discussing the great issue of the day. From times past our tribes had roamed the great plains, following the great herds of bison and living off the land, and that tradition had served us well, but many braves in the tribes, tired of a nomadic life, felt that with new agricultural and husbandry skills our tribes should start to settle in permanent camps.

While the chiefs passed round the pipe, debating these serious issues, the younger braves of my tribe and the other tribes prepared for the ritual dances. So before the decision was made there was the ‘Sun dance’, followed by the ‘Stomp Dance’. They had great fun, stamping their feet and shaking war emblems. I greatly missed being part of the dance troupe. I felt out of it, especially as it was the key occasion to show your manly skills.

But, as it happened, up on the hill, I was joined by a young female scout (Paheggie Sioux) assigned from the tribe Dakota. We gazed out over the plains, we chatted, we complained, we talked of our travels, we took turns on patrol and we kinda felt our rivers were destined to join. If you knew Paheggie Sioux, you would know what I mean.

Down below, the elders decided we should establish a permanent camp. They decided to establish a camp but also to keep up the nomadic tradition.

So along with other tribe members we founded Cahokia.

There is no greater honor than receiving a holy quest from your god and there is no greater reward than the one which you get after accomplishing the task. At least that's what our shamans tell us... Sha'tur likes to honor our young warriors with challenges, but I've yet to see one actually returning victorious.. but maybe now, this young warror, Omac will fullfill his destiny.

There is a legend about people living in the montuains holding ancient secrets and treasures. Omac has to reach this village, the village of Je'tees as they call themselves, and return these treasures to us.

Good luck Omac, Gods be with you!

Constantine ruler of the Byzantine people led his warriors out to explore the basin of the great river Marmara, on whose banks the settlement which bore his name, Constantinople, was taking shape.

First, the warriors climbed onto the high plateau, following the trail of great herds of animals. There they hunted down many great beasts, slaughtering them for their meat, hides and horns, though only observing from a distance the great white bull which the shamen Alexander indicated bore the marks of the gods. One day, Constantine dreamed, we could capture and hold these animals in large pens, and kill them whenever we wanted for meat.

Then back to the Marmara keeping the river to their side they came upon a signs of other humans, marks on the riverbank where groups had drunk or washed, and cut plants. They came at night upon the barbarians - for that is what they were - not sharing any sense of true civilisation. They were overawed at the display of discipline and power of the Byzantine warriors, and then Alexander spoke about the gods of the river Marmara and their chosing of Constantinople as the centre of the world, the meeting place of east and west. The elders of those barbarians gathered their wealth and poured it out at Constantine and Alexander's feet, begging for their people to be proected by the Byznatines. The wealth, Constatine noted, consisting of a truly glorious rich yellow coloured metal, which apparently the hills across the Marmara were filled.

Returning with this new wealth to Constantinople, Constantine continued south along the Marmara into the hills observing the outcrops of stone, towering huge above them. It was while Alexander was persuading Constantine that the sacrificial altar in Constantine should be fashioned from such rock (though how?) that the scouts reported back signs of yet more humans but these a far more disciplined group, travelling fast. Finally the warriors were sighted, still some distance away. Speaking a strange tongue, carrying a banner of white with a red cross, they emerged out of the south scouting the land. Constantine sent Alexander with a message:

"Hail, people of the South, bearers of the red cross. You are entering the land of the Byznatines, along the great river Marmara. To the north lies Constantinople, the centre of the world, the meeting place between east and west. You are welcome there to trade and to learn."

Constantine, hearing back from his scouts about the movement but lack of response from the Southern People, pondered for a moment, then smiled. Turning to his men he proclaimed "See these bearers of the red cross have acknowledged our lordship over the valley of the Marmara - they turn aside into the desert hills. So be it. Erect a cain of stones here to mark the agreement by the Southern People that the spirits have given this land to the Byzantines. "

When all was accomplished to Alexander's satisfaction, Constantine gave orders for his men to cross the holy Marmara, for reports had reached him that barbarians coming to trade food in Constantinople had told tales of a great channels of water far to the west, tasting of salt, whose far bank was only visible from the hills.

May I ask where is your kingdom located? I will be more than happy to send your way one of my English scouts.

When he returned from exploring the mountains and forests, ‘Touch the Cloud’ told us of a strange and wondrous sight. He could see a small encampment up on a high mountain. He said he tried to attract the tribe’s attention, with smoke signals, Indian calls and hitting the tree trunks with his club, but to no avail. Whatever secret this tribe held they were keeping it to themselves.

Maybe it was the fabled home of Chareya, the Old Man Above, who planted the first trees and from the leaves, the first birds. He is said to have taken a stick and broken it in pieces; from the small end he made fishes and placed them in the mountain streams; from the middle pieces he made all the animals except the grizzly bear. From the big end he made the grizzly bear, the master of all.

But so strong and cunning was Grizzly that the Old Man Above was fearful of the creature he had made and retreated to the very high mountain tops. And there he lives for thousands of snows.
