INTRODUCTION TO THE SCENARIO LEAGUE
Welcome to the Civilization 2 Scenario League. This forum is home to Civ2 scenario designers, playtesters, graphics artists and enthusiasts. The emphasis is on user created scenarios so if you are only interested in the original game I would recommend the Civ2 General Forum. If you enjoy designing or playing scenarios then you are in the right place!
As you will see in the 'Current Projects/Recently completed projects' section (post #4) there are a lot of games in development. Some may take a long time to be completed but a lot of the fun of this hobby is creating process. If you want to try out any of the scenarios made by the members here of by past masters please check the 'Links to related sites' section (post #6) or 'Links to scenario archives' section (post #8). Our own Scenario League site has some of the best and most recent scenarios but there are plenty of other great works out there!
If you are new to Civ2 and need advice on how to get anything to work please read the 'A guide to starting scenarios' section (post #9) or start a new thread about your issue and the members here will be happy to help.
I hope you enjoy visiting the Scenario League

A GUIDE TO STARTING SCENARIOS
1) Make sure the scenario you wish to download is compatible with your version of Civilization. For example a scenario designed for Test of Time will not work if you only have Multiplayer Gold Edition and vices versus. You may also need to add a patch. If you are not sure look for a 'Read Me' text file in the scenario folder. This should state the version needed.
2) Unzip the downloaded scenario and put the folder into your Civ2 folder. I normally create a new folders called Scenarios to keep them in order. You can play the scenario from your desktop if you wish but keeping them somewhere in the Civ2 folder helps you keep track of things.
3) Make sure you check in the scenario folder for a notepad file called "Read Me" or "Players Notes". These documents may contain important information regarding the installation of the scenario as well as background info. Some scenarios come with a batch file that must be run before starting a game. The batch file normally re-names certain rules, events and graphics files automatically and you may need to repeat this at various points in the scenario. If you are running Windows XP or Vista you will need to download this: http://sleague.apolyton.net/images/7...PPLICATION.zip
Choice will allow XP and Vista to run the batch file.
If CHOICE.com does not work for you then try CHOICE.exe which can be downloaded in this thread: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...89#post5615989
4) If you encounter any problems that you cannot resolve please feel free to ask for help in this forum. Enjoy your scenario!

RESERVED FOR NEW IDEAS
This is the last post I need to annex. I guess every CivII player has a megalomaniac inside them just waiting to get out. Feel free to post comments, ideas, criticisms and requests below. Although I have submitted the first ten posts this is by no means my baby. The idea is for everyone to have their say and to build an information page that will benefit the whole community. I have deliberately left this post in reserve to allow room for expansion. If one of the sections proves pointless or we run out of space everything can be shuffled around to fit.

I have been thinking about how people might find their way to our forum and I decided to see how easy it was to find us on Google using the search words "Civilization 2".
The first result is the Wikipedia page about Civilization 2. Under the "See also" section there is a link for Apolyton Civilization Site (IE a Wikipedia page about the Site) and at the bottom of that page there is an external link to Apolyton's home page. From this home page you can either choose forums and look through the list to find Civ2 Scenario League or you can click on the Civilization II section under Classic Gaming which takes you to the Apolyton Civilization Site: Civ2 homepage/news. From there you can click on forums to find us.
I tried to edit the Wikipedia page to add the Scenario League forum and Scenario League Wiki in the External Links but it did not seem to work. Could somebody with Wikipedia editing experience mind adding these two links. This would mean that after typing Civilization 2 into Google potential visitors would only be two clicks away from discovering our lair
The second Google result is a site called Best Old Games that has a download link for Civ2. I have downloaded this and will see if the game works. If it does it would be a useful link for this Info thread.
The third result was for a site called Abandonia which as far as I could tell offered a download of Civ2 MGE that does not work.
The fourth result was for Civ Fanatics CivII overview which should allow people to find the Civ2 forum there after a little hunting.
The fifth result was for Apolyton Civilization Site: Civ2 homepage/news like the Wikipedia link from the first Google search result. This home/news page appears to be a little out of date. The most recent news was the release of Eivind's First Strike II in April 07. This is strange as I know Curt has added more recent news stories! Although there is a link on the left for Forums that would take you here I think it would be good if there could be a "news article" that was kept permanently at the top with prominent links to this forum and to the Scenario League Wiki.
As it stands this page appears to be the easiest way to find us through either Wikipedia or Google and I think we need to try and update it a bit. I take it that you can update this page directly Curt, to do you submit news stories to the higher ups?
There is a download database on the left hands side but it is clearly inferior to the Wiki. Do you know if it would be possible to alter this Civ2 home page to be more focused on the active parts of the community, such as the Civ2 General and Scenario League forums and our Wiki and hide away some of the redundant areas such as the Database?

I not too sure about this thread. Would not our collective interests be best served if all (or most) of these things are dealt with on our website. I mean the galleries and stuff etc. all should all eventually be housed on the wiki site right? Or else what is the wiki site for?
Or is the plan to origanize them here first before porting them over to the website.

To have everything on the S-League Wiki would be amazing. I just thought this thread could replace some of the older sticky threads which were out of date and a bit disjointed. Here all the useful info is gathered in one place and organized to make things easy to find. I can see no problems replicating all this info on the Wiki too. Think of this thread more as an index than a rival to the Scenario League site.
I'm not quite sure what you mean about the galleries. All I intend to do is provide links here to the existing graphics threads on this forum so people can find them easily and submit their work. There is also a link to the Resources section of the SL Wiki. I do not intend to post any graphics collections in this thread, just provide links to other threads and sites that host them.
I hope that makes things a little clearer.

Thanks guys. There is still a lot to add but it is taking shape quite nicely. The main addition from the old Great Library is obviously the current/recently completed section and the useful threads section. If anyone would like to nominate particularly interesting threads from the past I will add links to them. I have some time today so I will be going through the Great Library and plunder it for all useful (and still active) links.

Thanks Ciaran. I think the news/frontpage of the Scenario League ( http://apolyton.net/civ2/) needs updating with a permanently topped link to the forum and wiki. I have sent you a PM, and as I said in it don't rush, things will wait

Just added links to the Scenario League Wiki page, Civ Webring multiplayer forum and this forum on the Wikipedia page as well as a very brief heads up in the text (under the Game Modifications section):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_II Wikipedia Link
Would have done is sooner but it took me a while to find the "edit page" tab which is situated in a slightly different place to where it is on our own beloved Wiki. Hopefully this will help guide some more traffic our way.

It looks like somebody reverted your edit. IRC wikipedia has a policy against mods making edits pertaining to their own websites (sensibly for conflict of interest reasons). Perhaps you could raise the point in the discussion area, after all they have an external link to the civfanatics page...

It seems a bit odd that this would be considered a conflict of interest. I was only trying to direct potentially interested Civ2 fans to a forum and site where it is still being played and discussed. There is no other agenda. I will try and discuss it as you suggested. Thanks EZ.

That policy is a bit frustrating...!
Surely a human wiki admin can check the edits and approve the changes?

A news thread will be created right away...!
I reckon people should let us know on the thread of any scenarios or
items they want covered, and we can duly update the news page.
I might even link to a CIV2 news blog?
Would this be awesome/good/bad?

A blog is worth trying out. The only reservation I have is the fact that this forum (IE the SL Forum, not this thread!) already does much the same thing. Is there really the need for a separate blog repeating the same sort of info? Just playing Devils advocate. I do think the existing news page should be updated periodically with a summary of recent activity and should also point browsers to the Forum and SL Site.

Just seen this thread whilst working my way through the old Great Library links:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...hreadid=133671
Looks like I am reinventing the wheel in more than one manner. Good idea Harry Tuttle!
EDIT: Trawling through the old threads BM (IE Dating from before the emergence of McMonkey ) is really paying off. I just found this brilliant thread by Sarsstock: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?t=132371
I love shields! They give me a funny feeling in my tummy
