Classic scenarios for S-League
Would people like to nominate classic scenarios that are missing from the Scenario League that need uploading.

I am happy to do some of the work as I enjoy seeing the SL grow! I have a few in mind already but my favorites are not necessarily your favorites!

BTW the units section should be growing again soon as I have started compiling again. If anyone has any good compilations they want to see added then post them here and I will transfer them.

I thought we could use this thread to post our top ten all time scenarios, just for a laugh!

McMonkey's top ten (in no particular order):
Hellas (John Ellis)
Bonaparte II (John Ellis)
Seize the Crown (John Ellis)
Operation Market Garden (Techumseh)*
Frederick the Great (Techumseh)*
Casus Belli (Vegard Bjørketun)
Imperialism 1870 (Exile)
Komnenai (Heresson)*
Red Front (Captain Nemo/Alex Mor)
Brown Man's Burden II (Gothmog)

*Not on Scenario League
Techumseh, can I upload OMG/FTG or do you prefer to keep them exclusive to Tech's Village?

No old classics?

Oh well! I am gradually adding stuff. If there is anything you really want to see on the SL just shout!

With my morning coffee today I have added two new pages:

Operation Market Garden

Frederick the Great

As Techumseh has his own site where he can control which versions are available to download I have not put the files on the SL wiki, just a link that takes you directly to tecumseh's village.

Hope this was OK Tech? If not I can delete the pages pretty quickly

Just thought that such classics should be more accessible for the masses!

If you are happy with the pages I will add your other work too.

Re: Classic scenarios for S-League
Great idea, this topic about old classics!

It led me to try a scen I hadn't played before: Casus Belli (with your updated graphics )! It is really great, and I am having great fun as I am finishing the Swedes and the Poles with my Russian army!

I haven't compiled a list, but here are a few comments about your list and a few things that come to my mind!

Those are real classics!

And I would add:
- Age of War (no matter what Exile thinks about it and Age of Crusade by Exile
- Mongols by Harlan Thompson
-Roman Civil War by Techumseh
- Bitterfrost and Dictator series by Curtsibling
- Gold Gulch by Harry Tuttle
- Lord of the Ring series by Favoured Flight
and many many others!

Its always good to uncover an old gem! Casus Belli looks stunning with Fairlines 1700's nits and the map is a really nice scale. I have not played it SP yet, but the PBEM at Webring is a blast!

The scenario league is really good to work with. Once you have worked out some shortcuts you can build a page pretty quickly. Gets a bit monotonous, so I can only manage a scenario or two per day. It will be good to have all the scenarios in one easily accesable place!

All of the above - Especially Exile's classics, and his recent 'Italien' epic!

Not to forget Tech's 'Operation Market Garden', or 'Seven year War'...

And Koby's great scenarios like Insurrection and ZWK!

PS
There are some old wonders, like Alex Mor's 'Spartacus', or 'Seize the Crown' by John Ellis!

Funny you should mention Seize the Crown. I have updated the graphics using Jamestouts units and some new terrain and we have started a five player PBEM at Webring. It is one finely crafted scenario!

Over the past few weeks I have been trawling all the scenario databases of various sites to try and uncover lost gems. There are quite a few classics I had never seen before.

Death and Resurrection of an Empire, Struggle for Empire, Zhan Guo Quest for TianXia, Mamelukes, Celtic Italy, Fading Lights, The Mughals, Casus Belli, The Third Punic War, Of Celts and Iberians, The Omeyan Caliphate and Outremer are just a few that I had not seen, played or downloaded and forgot about.

The ones that I have played and enjoyed are slowly being uploaded to the Scenario League. A few of them are suitable for PBEM games with a little bit of modification.

I have been modifying the graphics for some of these scenarios and wondered if anyone had done their own mods that they wanted to share (Gareth )?

I would add to this list the Tamerlane scenario by Markus Eklund and the Byzantine series of scenarios by Masis Panos. The Panos scens usually require a little cleanup, but are enjoyable.

Where are all those Hereson scenarios? Mamelukes? Outremer?

Yesterday I started a major graphics upgrade (keeping all the Frogs and green) to Fading Lights:

Masis Panos' work is next on the list as are Outremer and Mamelukes.

With each one I upload I will add the original and modified files. I don't want to cause offence to anyone by suggesting that their originals were not up to scratch. Its just that since they were made there are many more beautiful unit and cities available.

Also, some of the Icons (Food, shields etc...), the screen borders and city screens make playing the game harder. I have tried to modify them so that the screens are clearer without losing the scenarios unique vibe.

I have uploaded a new version of my mod of 'Of Celts and Iberians' (that's a lot of OFs!). I have swapped the units around a bit and returned Fairline's hero units.

I have also built a page for Fading Lights but need to work something out before I upload my mod.

Can someone explain what each of the three dots (Dark blue, light blue and orange) on the green borders of the CITIES gif control.

I tried swapping them around but nothing appeared to be happening. I guess one moves the city size box, the other the flag, not sure what the third dot controls or which colour does what.

Excellent work McMonkey!

One note though. It seems as though everything is being categorised as either MGE or ToT. I see it's not just you doing that, so I suppose I have a general question/suggestion about the wiki...

There are a large number of scenarios that were made for FW (especially the classics as you're working on now). Categorising those as MGE is misleading. It might not matter for people with MGE, since they can play anything up to MGE anyway, but for those with only FW or CiC it would be handy to see the difference.

I could add FW and CiC categories and make them subcategories of the MGE category...

The orange dots indicate the top-left corner of the city size box. The dark blue dots indicate the bottom of the flag pole.

I'm not sure where you're getting light blue dots from. Are you seeing three pairs of dots on each city, or just two pairs with differing colours? I'd guess the light blue is actually the same as the orange, but the units file has a slightly different palette where cyan takes the place of orange.

The colours are bound to the palette indices.

You're doing a priceless job collecting those scen's McMonkey!

Apart from those already there or mentioned, here's some that comes to mind, in no particular order:

A World At War, by BKA
Ansteig and Up the Deadly Boot by John Petroski
Historibus Europae, by Henrik Lohmander
The 30 Years' War, by Jesús Muñoz Fernández by
Crisis of the New World Order, by Andrew P. Livings
Roman Riots II by St. Leo
Vikings: Across the Oceans by Mathias Köster
Cross and Crescent by Bernd Brosing
South American Crisis by Academia
Atomic Eagle by Harry Tuttle
Vendetta 2 by Curt Sibling
Bitterfrost (for MGE) by Curt Sibling

I'm sure there are plenty more to add, but these are the ones that comes to mind.

@Mercator

Good point about the FW and CiC. I had not thought of this as I have owned a copy of MGE for years now. I think I gave my FW and CiC discs to friends!

Quote:

If you are offering to add those categories then I would say go ahead. If you meant to type 'would' instead of 'could' then I will look into doing it!

Re: Dots
I only noticed the light blue dots when I took a look at another scenario (can't remember which) and saw all three. I guess the light blue is not important.

Now I know how these dots affect the positions of the flags/size boxes I can finish off my mod. Thanks!

@Eivind

I have worked out a very quick method for making the pages.
First I get all the images and downloads ready on my desktop.
Next I upload them and add the links to a notepad.
I then copy and paste someone else's page and use the read me info to modify the text.
I then add in the images and download link and the job is done.
It is really a very quick process when you have a system.

I think it is good to get all the classics together in one place. The Spanish Apolyton site is a good source and is well laid out. CFC has a lot of good scenarios, but it also has a lot of very poor ones and it is not always easy to tell which is which.

Some scenarios, such as Casus Belli, would be very difficult to find unless you were specifically looking for them.

I would also like to add more graphics to the resources section but it is very time consuming getting them into a logical and tidy order. Maybe something to work on another time. Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey!

Sounds ressource
McMonkey, there is something else I wouldn't mind having: a compilation of unit sounds classified by genre (cavalry, gun, sword, monster, etc...).

Just to keep you busy once you have finished your other S-League compilations!

(I could say I'll do it myself, but... you would all be into retirement before I finish that...)

Thats a good idea Cyrion. Something to add to the list!

I also thought that a section for utilities, tools and knowledge would be useful. I know all these are out there already but to be able to bring them all together in one place would be cool.

This could include simple things like diagrams of how to modify the gif files (IE where to place blue/orange dots ) and practical advice on modifying the rules and events files as well as need tricks for scenario designers.

It is easy to assume that this knowledge is universal but there are still new designers coming through!

What I may do is keep things simple and just add links to great existing sites like Mercator's and Cradle of Civilization. The good thing about the Wiki is we can add and modify the info to make it easier for people to find what they are looking for.

I've created the FW and CIC categories and started updating scenarios (and banned a spammer)... To save me the trouble of downloading all uploaded MGE scenarios and checking the version for each I'm assuming you, Eivind, Curt Sibling, Jim Panse, Harry Tuttle, Exile and kobayashi all only made MGE scenarios. Is that correct?

Crosspost... MGE is the only Civ2 version I *don't* have, but I've used Cedric's MGE patch a couple of times when I needed to test something badly.

The 11th byte in a savegame/scenario file is a file version number (to differentiate the changes in the savegame format due to changes in the game). The most common versions are:
39=CiC and before (down to v2.42 at least)
40=FW
44=MGE v1.3
49=ToT v1.0
50=ToT v1.1

I actually just added a little tag in MapEdit (my secret, unreleased, work-in-progress version ) that shows that number. So I just download/open the zip, drag&dop the scenario file onto MapEdit and I've got the answer.

Mine are all MGE--only platform I've ever owned.

I repeat; WHERE can I find the Mamelukes and other Hereson scens? What site? They're not on ACS nor CivFan nor Spanish site.

btw of Mamluks, I think I screwed something btw of fixing it. Dumb Frank civ seems to be disbanding its most worthy units. But I'll have to play it a couple of times to know for sure. If it continues to be so, I'll have to fix it again.

Thanks for remembering about my scns.
