Upcoming : Finnish Front

Im going to make a scenario of the Russo-Finnish Winter War. It is going to be from 30 November 1939 to 12 March 1940. There are going to be 4 Countries in it.

Finland
Soviet Union
Sweden
Norway

Should i make week turns or day turns?? what do you think?

Ok seriously this was an interesting war where clearly overwhelmed Finns did their best and hold their ground and they inflicted heavy damage on the russians and we have the genius Gustaf Mannerheim to thank for.
But I'm not sure what's Norway's and Sweden’s part in it. To my knowledge they where neutral. Hmm will they be able to join the war in this scen? Perhaps a defensive alliance of the good Scandinavian countries against the big and evil russian invader :)

The Russians would be the most interesting as they are the attackers, but would have overwhelming superiority.

The Finns on the other hand will only press end turn far too often, as they only actions will be to simply hold out!

Sweden provided weapons to the Finns, and I believe there were anti-Soviet volunteers from both nations.

as far as i know sweden paid a part of the bills and sent 8000 voluteers to finnland. norwy also sent - as denmark - about 500 voluteers as a sign of "scandinavian solidarity" (as we have seen, this solidarity was not more than a hole phrase at this time.

many germans wanted to fight with the finns against the communists but the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was too important to Hitler in that moment ("... everything i do I do against Russia. If the West is to dumb to understand this I´ll have to ally myself with Russia to crush the West before attacking Russia." I know that Hitler said this. You may excuse this translation, I only know this in German)

btw, what about the military "aid" from the Western Allies (UK, France)? They sent (I´m not kidding now!) some biplanes, vintage Machine Guns and some guns. If you need more details about this "aid" just tell me, I can give you exact numbers if you need them

and The Hungarians also sended some Full armed voluteers to Finland. And The Italians sended some. Im maybe going to make some events when the finns will get some extra units in the Major Cities.

As I recall, those allied troops also had as part of their mission to invade neutral Sweden from Finland and seize controll of the iron ore fields in northern Sweden.
The idea was that this would deny the Swedish iron to the Germans.
However as the armistice was signed before the troops arrived that plan was abandoned...

The Soviet 44 Armored Division is ready to attack Suomussalmi, the finns are preparing to meet them.

The Finns Won this historical battle with only 800 casualties, The Russian Casualties were 23.000!
So H Tower now you know that it isnt easy to destroy finland! :evilgrin:

:b: That brings back memories; what a great game PG2 was. Seeing Figu's shot of Suomussalmi put me in mind of PG2 also - IIRC Suomussalmi was the third or fourth scenario in the German campaign.

Actually i meant in PG style. The pre-scenario screen included a map with arrows showing the armies' movements, some photos from WWII etc.


It was as i recall the fourth mission(two in Poland, one in Norway and the fourth in Suomussalmi).



I however liked PG1 much, much better.

I really can't wait for this scenario to come out. I looked a little into Finland's history and, though most people don't notice it, Finland is a strong military power. It was the only country in WW1 to pay off it's debt and then in WW2 how they fought the Russians to a stand still. How is the scenario coming along, btw? Any more screenshots?

Ahh, I'm anticipating this scenario so much. I've been tweaking old WW2 scenarios for the sheer purpose of playing as the Finns lately. I know you're busy with the Challenge of Fate scenario (also looking forward to) but would you consider making a fictional scenario about the Finns when you're done? I had a few basic ideas.

1.) The Finns start a German-supported revolution in WW1

or

2.) Russia tries to invade Finland again during the Cold War times

Just some basic ideas that can have a lot of detail thrown into them. I was just curious because I'd like to see the Germans help the Finns revolt in WW1.

Hey, this looks nice! Few things I would do different tho;

1) Use Suomi konepistooli in your units
2) Make the snow whiter, not grey. This way the units stick out of the map much better.
3) Change the cities design.
4) complete it.

Didn't some branch of the Turcoman race migrate to the lands that now comprise modern Finland?
There they mixed their blood with the Germanic-skandinavian races and created the Finnish nation.

Palaiologos, that is common misunderstanding that has absolutely no, zero, nill, nada factual basis. Finns havent been in any contact with the turkomans...ever! we are a Finno-Ugric people, just like the hungarians aka the magyars. The missunderstand is a bastard son of the ignorant europeans who somehow think hungarian sounds like turkish so they must be turkish too.

Those Vickers were only used once, as most of the Vickers didn't have Guns, or any Radio equipment. We bought them without Guns, Radios because it was more cheap.

Some of them were used only once near Viipuri when the Russians was close to the city.

How will you simulate the impact of hit'n'run tactics? Alpine Troops never mattered much in my games as anything but regular defence troops.

Hmm... Seems that the balance of power will be hard to create. When Russia invaded the Karelian Isthmus, they assaulted with about 1400 tanks, while the defenders had roughly 67 outdated anti-tank guns, and still managed to stop them.

I've also begun thinking about creating two other techs:

Allied Intervention: You get a few transports off the norwegian coasts loaded with troops, but you lose your Swedish Support thus, all Swedish Volunteer Units are disbanded and you are at war with them.. (The Allied true intentions was to take the Swedish Iron Ore mines)

Deployment of Swedish Regular Troops: You begin to get Swedish Regular Troops (They will be good), and more volunteers.

I always thought that the Allies only wanted to stop Sweden from exporting the iron by capturing some key ports in Norway, not actually attack Sweden. (you realy learn something new every day):)

The allies (well, Churchill mostly) planned to take Narvik, then use that to occupy the Swedish ore mines in the far north, and then go on to support Finland against the Soviet Union.

And will this scenario ever be done? :p ;)

I think this scen is too hard to do. The Finnish troops during the war were damn good. The difference between Russians killed compared to the Finnish casualties is immense! How can someone create that in a game?

It is doable (geez, was that even a word? :D), and about the Allied thing.... I read from some offical finnish documents which said that the Allied troops had strict orders not to engage the Russian troops.

This scenario probably will be released around christmas... I really don't got any time for it at the moment.

I think it would actually be an interesting concept - a scenario where the human player's units were much better than the AI's units. Naturally the AI would have a much larger number of units, and a greater production capacity.

This would cause the human player to really husband his/her units carefully. Not many scenarios that I've played call for that approach (most seem to be about rushbuilding key units, as opposed to working with what you have).
