View Full Version : The city name thread

Well we have a thread for worker names so why not one for city names, given that we'll soon have a 2nd city.

And of course by soon I mean in like 10-15 game turns which will probably be like a month from now :D

It occurs to me that we might be able to do some sort of metagaming if we wanted to, with respect to what we choose for our city names, by strategically choosing the default Ethiopian names.

I am not familiar with BtS much less MP in BtS, so I don't know if the city names of other civs are visible either from the Top 5 cities page or from initiating contact. But for instance, if we named our 2nd city with the default Ethiopian capital name, we might cause people to think that is our capital (only city).

Now we probably couldn't convince the Templars that it is our capital since they've probably scouted over here and it wouldn't have the right culture amounts.

But if we named it the Ethiopian 3rd city, that might cause them to think it is our 3rd city? They might wonder if we could have gotten 2 settlers out that fast.

And that's of course not even mentioning the fact that would we WANT them to think we have 3 cities....

But anyways that's my job on the team. To come up with stupid ideas and have the rest of you tell me how stupid they are :D.

And even if we don't want to do anything like that, we still have to come up with a name for our next city!

Interesting but pretty easy to see thru ... the capital has a STAR on it. And you can tell how many cities a civ has by opening up the diplo box ... all cities are listed their except their capital. :D

Yeah that's what I thought. But I wasn't sure if you could open up the diplo box in MP without the other person being online.

Unless pitboss is different, you can't. In MP clicking on a players name causes a sound affect and the other player's name to flash. You have to click on the name to open the diplo box, even on the same team.

You can open the diplo box in pitboss.

Either way, cheap tricks with city naming will do us more harm than good. It's easy to find out how many cities we have (even if it would take a while) and once other teams find out we've been messing around we'll just look like untrustworthy idiots.

I agree that cheap tricks are a bad idea. I would also suggest avoiding exessively dystopian theme, because that wouldn't inspire much confidence either.

We should either pick some neutral theme or stick with default names. How about using fictional capitals, or just famous cities from books and movies? (That would let us keep our capital's current name, without giving the entire civilization a dystopian image.)

If this forum quoted the original message as well, and allowed sigs, that exchange would totally be mine.

Did we settle on a name for our 2nd city? The settler is called Steve ... so how about Stevensville? Stevenston?

If you went with Pink Dot, doesn't Red Dot's name become 'Red Dot' ... or does 'Pink Dot' hold some soft of mythical power?

This was mentioned in some other thread before you went on your crusade for thread purity. :)
Pink Dot was chosen for being kind of legendary in the RB community, I guess.
After Airstrip One & Pink Dot, I think Twin Peaks makes a nice change and underlines the beauty of the country side, no?

Ok, time to decide on a proper name for "Blue Dot".

I throw "The Beach" out there.

Do we want to rename Cape Copper, now that we won't settle it in the preferred spot? To keep the "CC" we can go with :
Canned Cows
Crispy Chips
Close Catch
...

:-)

We could call it Cape Cod. And explain that it would have had crabs if we had time to get to that hill.

I'm inclined to suggest a name involving some sort of "Surprise", as it has been in more than one way...

Those hidden resources under the last fog were a surprise

Imperio's settler was a surprise

Our New City is bound to give them quite the nasty surprise :naughty:

Maybe something like... "Bolt from the Blue"?

Or rather... "Bolt ON the Blue"?

And would that name be too long?

Er, Cape Town?
