I have some .avi files that I want to post on youtube, but the file is too big (it's 266mb and I need to get it down to 100mb or smaller). I am looking for software that will allow me to either compress the file, change the file type to a more efficient youtube or myspace compliant codex, or allow me to break the file up into two or three smaller files. Does anyone have any recommendations?

VirtualDub

It is very free, and is VERY good for compressing and cutting.

Windows Movie Maker will also do a good job if you don't need to do anything special. I used VirtualDub for a lot of effects, and Movie Maker for putting the clips together and the final formatting.

When uploading to YouTube, not all formats are created equal. They convert anything you upload to FLV, and it looks best if you stick to 320x240 at 30 frames per second.

Easy Video Joiner-Splitter. Do it manually. Slide bar to logical cut spot and make your break.
