So I tried loading the game under Multiplayer -> Play by E-Mail -> Load Game but when I do so, I get a message saying:

"Civilization IV

The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed.

(OK)"

When I click OK, Civ4 just exits and spits me back to the Desktop.

I have not made any modifications of any kind to my Civ 4 install. I am running patch 1.61. The "about this build" window in Civ4 says:

"Civ Version: 161
Save Version: 103
Build Version: 1.6.1.1841 (45604)
Build Date: Thu Mar 30 10:49:29 2006
Build: FINAL RELEASE
Mod Name: None"

I will try loading the game on my home computer when I get home this evening. If that doesn't work, I don't know what's going on. Are you guys running some other version than patch 1.61? Any other ideas?

I am not sure if we are playing on weekends or not anyway, but if we are, there is a small (I'd say about 20%) chance that I won't be able to play my turn this Saturday (tomorrow). Just wanted to let you all know.

sorry I'm sure the game's with me, my computer got a virus, a bad one, I have a friend who's trying to salvage what he can right now. In the meantime I have checked a computer out from the library but CIV is too powerful to run on it, EU II isn't though...

Just to let you all know, I am going to be out of civilization (both literally and in the sense of the game) from ~5pm tomorrow (6/29) through sometime on 7/4. I won't have Internet access there so I won't be able to play. If the game comes around to me during that time, feel free to have me skip the turn. (I'm not entirely sure how that works.)

yeah, just make me AI, word on the street is something got soda spilled on it a while ago and it's too 'spensive to fix.

Looks like financial aid is buying me a cheapo computer this fall. At least I could salvage my video card :D

Hm... So it seems that I am the next in turn, starting from DrDeke's last save. How does it work, exactly, to temporarily turn a human player to an AI?

I, with the help of MMC, tried to get pitboss to kick him out, it worked fine, until I loaded Civ to play the turn, I got an error, which resulted in Civ not showing any text. (I would have never gotten that for if it had not been for MMC) He also said he didn't know if Pitboss worked for PBEM. But I may try agian today.

hey guys...

unfortunatly im going to stay a few days not able to play Civ, because i sold my old 64Mb VideoCard to buy a 256 one... im awaiting the new videocard arrives, and then ill be able to play again.

im not sure about how long it will take, since shipping time here in brazil its kind of a unsure thing, so if takes too long, like 2 weeks, to get my new video set up an ready, i would mind be replaced.

Well, it sounds like smellycowsquid is going to be gone for most of this week, so it's probably not such a bad time for your upgrade to happen.

This is my first Civ PBEM game ever, so I don't really know how these usually go. I do not mind if the game takes longer because someone goes on vacation for a week or upgrades their computer. My only concern is that I hope people do not lose interest in the game midway through and stop playing. At the current rate, I suppose this game will run for what, about a year and a half? It would be a shame to spend months playing a game only to have everyone bail out eventually. But, I suppose most Civ players are pretty dedicated, so maybe that doesn't usually happen.

I have no problem waiting for a few days for someone, it just should be announced by the player, so that noone is confused where the game currently is.

Anyway, is it possible to temporarily replace a player by the AI? In particular in the current state of the game, having the AI make one scout move and press Enter would not hurt the player, right?

This was the -3840 save, right? I received it and sent my turn afterwards to prussia. If there is a later turn to be played, I did not receive it.

My behaviour in the play up to now depended on some agreements I had with phbreng; I would not want to continue the game in this state with the AI taking over him, sorry.

I also wonder what happened to the others. Another PBEM game in which I was involved (Genesis) also died at around the same time, without anyone giving notice. That's the bad part, actually; why don't people tell the others when they don't want to keep playing? :confused:

To tell you the truth, I am not happy with the strategy I have been following during this game so far, so if no-one else is playing anyway, it is fine with me to end the game.

I would still love to play a long-term PBEM or PitBoss game; perhaps we can find some more reliable players with whom to start another game.

PitBoss means concurrent move taking, right? This sounds too hectic for me.
