Allright, now this is serious.

Civ 4 1.52 is out there. I wish to start a PBEM with 7 players, on the following settings:

Map: Continents
Size: Standart
Climate: Temperate
Sea Level: Medium
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Difficult: Monarch (or emperor)
All victory conditions will be enabled.

Of course ANY settings can be discussed here ;)

As I am a PBEM newbie, Iīm accepting any veterans taking charge here too :D

I will play with Saladin from Arabia.

any questions send a private message or e-mail to commanderapocalipse at hotmail dot com
please join!

if this game ever does start... I'm certainly available. I think we have to set an age ceiling for participants. This 1 might take a while... No one older than Paddy? ;)

Just checked which century I was born in - should allow many many players to particpate ;)

I'm in too. 7 Players might make for nice world wars... a year from now. I think i'd prefer pangea or another "guaranteed early contacts" start though

I am now 24 and in good health ;) I might just still see the end of this one

7 players... a suggestion: start in the Industrial Era - get it moving :D (just a suggestion)

7 players... a suggestion: start in the Industrial Era - get it moving :D (just a suggestion)

might be a good idea. i haven't tried those in sp, and i think i like ancient starts better (as i suspect virtually everyone does) but on the other hand, it won't really hurt the diplomacy-game which is what should be really cool about this one, and it will start that much faster with 3(?) settlers

Perhaps just as good would be to let someone set up an ancient start with 3 settlers and 3 warriors each for us though?

Paddy
March 13, 2006, 02:55
yeah starter packs are cool as well :D

Charles_Bronson

As soon we got full house, we should vote game setup.

Paddy the Scot: elizabeth of the England

Now, please, would be nice if everybody could vote. I donīt know how to post a poll, so iīm going to do it the old fashioned way:

Pangea. :b:

SebP
March 15, 2006, 01:44
BigFree we were 7 already. Opinions on playing with 8? I don't really care.

About the starter pack. How do we even do it? I didn't find any options to start a pbem from a scenario? Can it be done? And again, anyone have a buddy who could set this up for us? Cause I don't. If we play pangea, one of us could do it... The maps look all the same. He could just edit the plain scenario textfile for editing in the units (it is simple enough from what i see), but i suspect he will see the map in graphics when he converts a save to a scenario. Since he doesn't have to see the starting positions in graphics, it won't matter much though.

Paddy
March 15, 2006, 02:04
Make it 8 :b:

March 15, 2006, 06:12
And the (assumed, i bet half of you knew exactly how to do it) problem is solved, it is easy enough to just use a modded CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml. Duh. Also, no outsider is needed to set it up, and noone will need to see any maps beforehand. I was still in SMACs scenario editing mindset

So far, here the game settings:

oh have we looked at play order yet?

Charles_Bronson
March 15, 2006, 08:07
Unless order matter, this turn order is nice for me.

Paddy the Scot: Elizabeth of the England
Charles Bronson: Saladin of Arabia
Platypus Rex: Alexander of Greek
James the Scot: Julius Caesar of Rome
SebP: Malinese
McMeadows: Random
Grandpa Troll: Catherine of Russia
Bigfree: ???

I donīt know how to create the map with this starting pack! :idiot:

So I leave it to you Paddy! :unworthy:

Paddy
March 15, 2006, 08:09
Ok I personally think we need to look over the game order a bit old chap :D

will come back with a suggestion soon :)

Paddy
March 15, 2006, 08:42
Ok, my suggestion is

Brazil - Charles Bronson: Saladin of Arabia
Central US of A - Grandpa Troll: Catherine of Russia
West Coast US of A - Bigfree: ???
West Coast US of A - Platypus Rex: Alexander of Greek
East Coast Australia - James the Scot: Julius Caesar of Rome
East Coast Australia - Paddy the Scot: Elizabeth of the England
The Netherlands - McMeadows: Random
Germany - SebP: Malinese

Starting in Brazil with Mr Bronson, then straight up the world to the Friendly Troll ;)... puttering across the map to the two West Coast Auto boys, so they can Pimp the Ride :naughty: next stop Hawaii for some gogo joice before the save arrives with James. James already plays a few games while I at work, thus saves here when I get home. So to I already send several games to Mac :D so we have a good flow pattern there. Then the sacred save came follow the rivers into Germany for our man Seb :b: then back to the old trail of off to Brazil again ;)

SebP
March 15, 2006, 08:57
Charles, i'll sent you an email with the modified xml-file + instructions how to use it.

Also, everybody should check on his first turn if he has 3 settlers and 3 warriors. if mcmeadows or bigfrees random civ turns out as incan, it should be 3 quechas obviously

last, for mcmeadows: my email adress is das DOT letzte DOT theorem AT gmx DOT de

PS: Perhaps it would be good to edit all the adresses into the first post of the thread once published

SebP
March 15, 2006, 08:59
also, i'm cool with raging barbs. if only so that we even get any despite the 3 settlers

Rivers flow into the sea in general. The Rhine is no exception. :D

Nonetheless, I catch your flow. Seems to be best to have you automatically send saves to me. Those deliveries always come through, even if it takes a year.. :D

 cheeky fella ;)

and wow... things really must be different north of the equator... see we have these things called boats and also cables... these two devices allow us to send items and information up a river - well actually, and I do not want to freak you out on this, but we can send things in both directions :D

and another one. there's a problem. it seems my solution requires the "mod" to be loaded whenever a game is loaded. this seems stupid, since after turn 1 its really all in the savegames anyways in this case. but civ4 works this way.

so, i say on the first turn everyone should send the modded file + instructions to the next player along with the saves.

also, if too many people think it's too much of a hassle to have the game (automatically) restart on loading the save, we could drop the settler thing... but i don't think that will be necessary

well, my 2 cents worth, I have had nothing but problems using a mod

I even had problems when I modded single player in a game with Vovan the results came across into his save

I really dont want a modded game as I am in so many wonderful games, I will back out if it has to be modded

Thanks for the offer thou

there might be another solution that doesn't require loading a mod each time, i'll see how that goes

if it doesn't work, we could still just use the industrial start to speed things up. i don't like it though. i would play, but i'd rather play ancient

I agree...

lets just get an ancient start happening - a good normal game thus less bugs :D

SebP
March 15, 2006, 09:55
ok. grandpa you won't be needing to load a mod ever... the solution was off course obvious... i'm just posting too fast (i sure hope i didn't this time)
if bronson just copies the single modified file over his original before he sets up the game and restores it to the original right after, noone will need to use civ4s modloader, since the only change is really the number of starting units, which will be hitherto be in the savegames, there shouldn't be any problems if we play with the original files and just use the modifications for setting it up

Ill offer this quote, as I am in a LOT of games and have tried several with Mods and had to do a complete reinstall because of problems associated with modding

I would say NO MODS unless of course someone can figure a way around this issue

Charles_Bronson

I will create again WITHOUT the mod, ok?

Many people complained about the modding, and anyway it will broke the game balance (organized civs will have good starting bonuses).

I will just wait until I hear some people...

1) Ask if the BigFree and Platypus rex have FAT32 systems, and ask if they could convert to NTFS. This problem is due to a file modification that occur when converting the file to one system to another. Note that the problem MAY still appear. The game will probably be recreated.

2) Wait for a patch.

3) Remake the game and pray a lot. See, if this restart occurs, I will reinstall my game.

(I vote for 1 if possible, if not 3)

I ask now to you, older, wiser and more experienced friends! What shall we do? :unworthy:

my emailadress is in this thread somewhere. but here it is again: das DOT letzte DOT theorem AT gmx DOT de

now that the game is finally moving, i would also like to suggest that ALL players email adresses be put in the very first post of the thread, so that one doesn't have to ask here publicly about adresses for email-diplomacy.

well, since diplomacy before contact is (or in my opinion should be) a "no" anyways one could always ask for them ingame, but it would still be good to have them all compiled in one place
