Ok, I'm looking to start a PBEM game. This'll be my first one on here and with multiple people.

I'm pretty open to ideas of what options people will want, so if you want to play, let me know. Currently my thoughts are this:

Continents (I tend to be partial to this, but I'm still flexibile if other people want something else)
Size: Standard or Small (depending on # of players)
Climate: Temperate

Everything else probably just using the defaults unless people want something else. I'd prefer Random choice of Civs.

Anyone that's interested let me know so some decisions can be made and a game started.

sabrewolf
January 13, 2006, 09:12
i'd be up for another game if we start with a non-ancient start (the first turns are very tedious in PBEM)... :)

HitAnyKey
January 13, 2006, 09:44
Non-Ancient works for me. I'm up for something different. I'll just have to re-read up on how to set up a good non-ancient game as I havn't done that yet with Civ4 and it's been awhile since I did it with Civ3.

Any other settings or stuff you'd prefer?

sabrewolf
January 13, 2006, 10:35
it's very simple to set it up. you just select it from the dropdown ;)

and the cool thing: the "later" you start, the more you get. i've got 2 non-ancient PBEMs going:
- classic: you begin with an archer, a scout, a settler and a worker.
- industrial: 3 settlers, 3 riflemen, 2 explorers, 2 workers. your cities also start at size 3 and have 2-3 improvements already built in it.

so something else than these two starts would be preferable for me. medieval or renaissance or modern are all fine!

one downside of the "later" starts: the religions get distributed randomly after about 3-5 turns. if you are lucky to get one of them, it's great. otherwise you'll have to get stuff that usually is not high priority (such as philosophy, theology or divine right)

other stuff: not too easy AIs otherwise they can be exploited too easily with trades and alliances. a tougher AI (they are weaker in MP than in SP) such as monarch makes it less likely that he'll be misused to one player's advantage...

HitAnyKey
January 13, 2006, 10:42
Cool. I'll start looking into more specifics tonight and deciding which way to start things out.

We still need a few more players though, so anyone else that wants in toss a reply!! :D

I've love to get this game started either Saturday night or sometime Sunday.

As an FYI, I'm in the EST timezone and can do turns after 7pm EST or right at 7:30am EST during the week. I'll figure out turn orders once we get a couple more players and I know everyone's timezones and normal connection times.

koningtiger
January 14, 2006, 05:47
I am in if you want. I would vote for medieval start.

Random civ is ok for me.

My timezone is GMT+1 and i usually play after 23:00(GMT+1), my email is Gildor_Calafalas[at]hotmail[dot]com.

Thanks.

sabrewolf
January 14, 2006, 06:44
i usually play my turns until 23:00 GMT, which overlaps with the play time of koningtiger. so i'll in future prioritise this game ahead of others. so put me in before him in the play order.

as for the civilisation choice: i first need to know what game type before i can choose the civ... :)

HitAnyKey
January 14, 2006, 20:44
Well my game title pretty much says it all. I was thinking of doing as many settings as possible as Random.

Per your suggestions, I think I'll go with Midieval.

For Game type, I'm thinking of taking a few of the map types (Continents, Terra, Pangea, Inland Sea) and putting the names in a hat and drawing one randomly. Give me suggestions of other ones you might want tossed into the random mix or if you want any taken out.

Sea Level & Shoreline would be Random.

All the Civs (including ours) would be Random, and also using the Random Personalities option (though still don't fully even know what that does...but it has 'random' in it, so may as well try it :D ).

I'm thinking of keeping it at Temperate climate, since the others might just be too annoying for this type of game.

I'm also thinking 3 AI's, with the difficulties at Prince or Monarch (probably Monarch as requested).

If it stays just us 3 players then I'll make it a Small map. If we get another player or two, might make it a Large map. Or if everyone prefers, I'll keep it at the small map and just remove some of the AI's.

sabrewolf
January 14, 2006, 21:05
small, standard or large are all fine for me. the more AI, the more fun, but we can also play with less than full spots (more space). it's up to you!

random personalities basically means that the traits are random. for instance saladin could be organised and aggressive instead of spiritual and philosophical. but he'd still have the same unique unit.

looking forward to this game :b:

HitAnyKey
January 14, 2006, 22:12
Ok, I'm going to give it until as late as possible tomorrow night and then I'll start up the game. That'll leave time for one or two more players to jump in just before I start it up.

So anyone reading this thread, let me know your timezone and normal playtime so I can set the play order and also toss me your email addy.

My plan is to probably toss out the turns around midnight'ish EST Sunday night. Unless no one else joins up tomorrow and you both want to wait another day or so for more players. But I'm cool with just the three of us and a handful of AI's if no one else joins.

sabrewolf
January 16, 2006, 04:45
it looks like no one else has been looking. if you want, i can ask somebody else. there are some very reliable players that i know of...

HitAnyKey
January 16, 2006, 07:43
Go for it if you want. I'm going to start the game up whenI get home from work tonight, so if anyone joins up in the meantime then I'll add them to the game.

HitAnyKey
January 16, 2006, 19:22
Since you guys are already into the wee hours of the morning and won't be doing your turn until tomorrow (morning or night) anyway, I'm going to hold off on starting the game until later tonight for myself.

If no one else decides to join between now and then, I'll kick off the first turn to Sabre.

If anyone else wants to play, let me know before 11pm EST, which is when I'll start this game off.

Anyway, I've PM'd ya my email addy. I'll be able to do my turn when I get home from work tonight.

Oh and my start location was crap too. Have my settler and warrior separated by a body of water. Trying to find my way around it now.

sabrewolf
January 17, 2006, 10:52
i'm not too thrilled by my start either, being so close to one of the poles, thus only being able to expand in one direction. though, it could be worse...

but i do like the medieval start! not having to go through the tedious early stuff makes it really much more fun :b:

sabrewolf
January 17, 2006, 10:52
HitAnyKey: how many AI players did you add?

HitAnyKey
January 17, 2006, 11:05
I think I thew in 2 AI's at Monarch difficulty with a Small map.

sabrewolf
January 17, 2006, 11:31
cool!

now as long as it isn't montezuma, tokugawa or another of those aggressive bastards, it's gonna be fun :)

by the way: religions will be distributed within a few turns. however, only 4 of them will come (budd, hind, juda, conf), so one player will be unlucky :( ... let's hope it's an AI player!

If this was a ladder game, you will see how unfortunate start this would be. :naughty:

Ok, send your peace offer and i will accept it, btw declaring war when i had an archer so near of your city was too risky, what would have happen if you would have lost your archer?

Ahm..turn sent to HitAnyKey

koning: if i would have lost?
honestly? ... i'm happy i did not loose. reloading is cheating and i detest that. on the other hand it would have meant an immediate loss. so as said earlier: lucky that it wasn't an issue.

on another note: hitanykey: how comes we are all SO close? it seems like a tiny map with 15 players  ;)

in civ3 you could recapture a city without razing it if you had culture before it was taken. isn't this the same in civ4?

I don't know and I don't want to risk it. I can't afford to have this city be destroyed...but I think I can afford to let the Barbs have it for a handful more turs. I just hope it grows soon.

by being stuff betweek mansa, you, the aztecs and tundra, i had no other choice that to attack.
seeing that i only had copper and monty got feudalism (longbows) i had to attack with axemen... and soon...

lucky that the barbarians had been storming in before so i could train my axemen quite decently before taking on monty AND, i had a wonderful battle where my axeman did not even experience a single dent!! :D

anyhow, the many cities are crippling me already, taking the aztec capital (should i succeed) won't make it easier...

i think the only defensive bonus they get are the combat promotions.

this is imho a great feature of civ4 because it makes your fast-movers very vulnerable to counter-attack while tough to stop otherwise...

sabrewolf

i don't intend taking out mansa. in fact, i didn't even intend fighting him. all i wanted was feudalism and the two cities of montezuma. he was blocking my expansion.

too bad i coulnd't extort feudlism from him... even with just one city left, protected by a defender with 0.5 strength didn't he want to give up

ok guys, war elephants are waaay too overpowered. with 2 promotions they have the strength of 9.6. regular longbows have some chance but only if lots of defensive bonuses (hills, culture) is available.

anyhow, witnessed by HAK the 3rd capital of mansa has been taken out. my catapult injured the longbowman,, my elephant survived clearly and the spearman had no problem against the chariot locked at home. mansa musa is left with 1 city where montezuma once had his 3rd city.

so my question is: shall we continue? and if yes: how?
why am i asking? it's obvious that you guys will join forces against me because there is no other way to stop me otherwise. i am also aware that if i let you grow, you'll catch up and overtake me. after all, my infrastructure is miserable because i was virtually building units flat-out.
so... what do you guys think?

koningtiger
March 28, 2006, 04:06

Btw, sent to HitAnyKey.

sabrewolf
March 28, 2006, 08:03
no no, you don't need to declare me winner. so far it has been too easy for me. montezuma was only defending with archers although he had feudalism for a long time. and mansa musa threw units at my stack initially, suicided his only catapult in the first turn of war. and besides that he did not even attack my archer-defended catapults that were bashing down the culture defences until the units had recovered from the other battles.

anyhow, if you don't mind, let's continue for the time being :)

HitAnyKey
March 28, 2006, 12:50
I'm all for continuing. The last PBEM I lost, I battled until my last city was destroyed. If Sabre wants to win this one, he has to TAKE the win from me. ;)
