View Full Version : PBEM: On the Waterfront

Hi everyone and a good New Year,
I'd like to start a new PBEM with the following settings:
[edited Jan-15]
-- Big map
-- Archipelago, Winding Continents
-- Prince difficulty level
-- All other settings standard
-- 10 civs, including the 5 human players
Player list and turn order:
1. Claus -- Spain
2. -- AI civ
3. Canuck77 -- Mongolia
4. -- AI civ
5. Sabrewolf -- England
6. -- AI civ
7. Corossol -- USA [Washington]
8. -- AI civ
9. Vovan -- Random
10. -- AI civ
Please note:
The average turn speed should be around 5 turns a week. I intend to play very regularly. If you think you can do that, then welcome to the game. But please, please don't join the game if
-- you don't have your own computer (at home or at work)
-- your computer is generally crash happy or your email system is not reliable
-- you are regularly away for the weekend
-- you don't have the newest patch installed and for some reason don't want to
-- you are engaged in one zillion billion other PBEMs and are too unorganized to keep them all running.
Sorry to say that but I think it's in the interest of the other players.
Anyway, thank you for reading this. If you are interested, just put a note down here.

i'd like to join in in our 4th try :)
elisabeth's england for me please.
level "noble" (although i think we should all try prince level as there are not many AIs around and they should at least be a little bit more of a challenge)
i fit all your criteria and i hope every other joiner is honest enough and knows that he'll fit too :b:
cheers
Canuck77

Okay, I'm in too.
I'll take Ghenghis Khan on Noble as well - I'm up for Prince too (per Sabre's suggestion).
Claus
January 2, 2006, 15:14
Thanks for the quick response.
Prince level, I don't know ... To be honest, I haven't won on Nobleman level so far. But of course, I will get more practice by the time, so we could give it a shot.
Canuck77
January 2, 2006, 15:28
I've not won the game on Prince, either - I'm able to play to the end and am typically in the hunt, but I end up losing out (generally Space Race).
The problem with PBeM that has the AI in it is the weaker AI tends to get exploited by human players - so basically, whoever starts up next to the AI ends up winning, since you walk in and whip them into submission (grabbing a couple cities and a couple techs along the way), then turn back to normal play with that much more of a head start.
SMAC was a huge example of this. Even on Transcend, the AI was honestly very easy to pimp.
I'm fine either way, though. Will be my first PBeM for Civ4, and I'm pretty crappy... so I'm pencilling this in as my "learning experience". :)

Cool, where almost complete. I'll set up the game tomorrow morning. If there's another applicant, we'll play in five. if not, four is good also.

regarding the prince thing: what canuck said is exactly what i meant.
the AI is exploitable. the higher its level, the tougher it is to dominate it. generally it is best if the AI part of the PBEM is 1-2 levels higher than your normal playing level where you are only up again AIs.
personally, i'd be willing to try monarch or maybe even one level higher. then of course only if there is plenty space for the humans to live. i guess prince is the best suitable for the average playing standard here.
oh, and claus, thanks for organising this :)

If you don't mind, I'd like to be the fifth player here. :) I've only completed one PBEM and one SG so far (and won four or five sp games), so I think noble will suit me fine (though if everyone else wants higher difficulty, I guess I can tolerate it too :D).

Fine, we're ready to start now.
@Vovan:
Thank you for joining us. Yet, I need to know where you live so I can set up the proper turn order according to time zones.
Btw, I'm impressed that you already have finished a PBEM!
@Everybody:
I will take Prince level, as this seems to be the general wish.
Being 5 the number of human civs, I suggest we add 5 computer factions to a total of 10. This would enable me to put one AI civ between two human players in the turn rotation.
The game normally uses a big map with 9 factions or a giant map with 11 factions, so we are in between.
I would use a giant map which gives us a little bit more space do build up our civilization.
I've summed up all the game details in the first posting in this thread.
As soon as I get Vovan's time zone (and maybe Corossol's and Canuck's, too), I will start the game. Please also write me if you usually do your turns in the morning, during work or in the afternoon.

ok, but can you put game speed to quick? otherwise we'll be playing the classical era in 2018 ;)

timezones:
- corossol from montreal which is GMT+5
- vovan iirc is in australia/new zealand
- don't know about canuck77...
turn succession is going to be like you showed or a switch between 5 and 7 :)
and last: please not just england. i explicitly request elisabeth! :)
Claus

Regarding the map size:
"Large" maps are set up with 9 nations by default, "Giant" maps with 11 nations. So with 10 nations we are in between that. Maybe I simply fill in a 6th AI civ, so we can start a giant map with the number of civs that is recommended by the game itself. I've found those default values always sensible - it matches very well with the "real" tech development history.
*****
Interesting though to reflect on the importance of civ number for the game speed. I don't think that a larger map necessarily implies longer game play.
More space means more cities.
More cities means more science points.
More science points means quicker tech advance.
Quicker tech advance means shorter game play.
However, one might say that a large number of cities favors a victory via space race, while a stuffed map with few cities makes a military victory easier - simply because there are fewer cities to be conquered.
Then, it's not the map size alone which counts, but the ratio between map size and number of civs. If you have a "normal" map with seven factions it's pretty much the same as playing on a "giant" map with eleven factions. The impression that a giant map makes the game longer has nothing but technical reasons: In the late play there are many units which make the CPU take longer for its calculations. This would affect single or LAN play, but not a PBEM.
sabrewolf
January 3, 2006, 07:07
claus: your assessment is very accurate except one thing: reasearch is not quicker on huge maps. it is in fact the same. while you are right that more science beakers speed things up, the cost for each is also higher.
two more effects of the huge map which you didn't write:
1) the slower start: costs are higher, but initially you start with the same many cities. this only is equalised when you've got your 5-8 cities or so running.
2) barbarians: in a huge map they will be an issue for a long long time. even on my recent large (highlands) game they were coming in permanently with axemen and swordsmen from the unsettled tundra area. pretty annoying as not even culture 5000 cities would cover all the tundra.
on the snaky continents the latter is less important because there is less area to come from therefore the defences can be concentrated :)
Canuck77
January 3, 2006, 07:41
I've sent my email address, as requested... and I'm in the Eastern timezone.
The turns will be all over the map (no pun intended) for me - but 90% of my turns will be during working hours.
Personally, I'm good with a smaller map, even if it means crowding.
EDIT - "Eastern Timezone" = Eastern Standard Time, or EST. :)
sabrewolf
January 3, 2006, 07:52
oh, not seldom my turns will be around 23:00 GMT which is 18:00 EST. maybe it is safer to put canuck ahead of me if he can be sure to play his prior to 18 EST?

Actually it's GMT -5 :)
I usually play between 23:00 - 04:00 GMT; weekends are more flexible.
Both map sizes are fine with me, but on PBEM I'm partial to Quick speed to shorten production wait times (unless we do a Classical start).
Claus
January 3, 2006, 09:54
Okay Canuck, I got your email adress, and we're almost ready to take off.
There are only two questions left:
-- Quick or normal game speed
-- Normal or large map size ("giant" seems out of discussion)
I prefer a large map because we are playing with ten civs and will be located on archipelago landscape where land will be short anyway.
Regarding game speed, I have no real opinion because I have never used quick speed. But thinking to myself, "why not?", I tend to agree to trying that out (Sabrewolf and Corossol being in favor of it, too).
To sum it up:
Things being as they are I will set up a "quick game" on a "large map" (or "huge map", how do you call it in English?)
If there are no further objections to that or to something I might have forgotten, you can still send them along. I will have to go to town for two or three hours and when I come back then I'm gonna set up the game.
*****
If everybody agrees I will put Sabrewolf behind Canuck77. From what I understand it should work pretty well with the time zones.
Oh, btw for those who don't know me, I'm from Southern Germany, same time zone as Sabrewolf.

Claus, I am in eastern US, so it's GMT -5, same as corossol. I usually play a little bit in the early afternoon, like I can usually play one turn around 1pm or so, and more in the evening between 5 and 11.

Well, it was only with one other person - Grandpa Troll - on a quick setting. Plus, we are in the same timezones and play pretty much at the same times of the day, so on good days we did 10 - 15 turns a day. :)

large is the 2nd biggest, huge is the biggest type.
and i like large+quick or even huge+quick :b:
actually my only request is that -should anybody know that they'll be slowing down the game over a longer period of time- withdraws from the game. i'll also agree to that.
maybe some day it is even possible to take over civs from the AI at a later stage (pitboss?)
If there are no further objections to that or to something I might have forgotten, you can still send them along. I will have to go to town for two or three hours and when I come back then I'm gonna set up the game.
:b:
maybe one thing to prevent frustration: don't chose either "dry" nor "cold". they are the most annoying settings. jungle can be cleared to juicy grassland, but deserts without rivers (which rock!) really suck. trust me... in another PBEM i'm on a big continent with only 4 useful city locations, all of them will have at least 3 desert tiles

Turn 4000BC has been sent to Canuck77. Judging the speed we got this set up with, I'm very confident the game will run smoothly.
The usual advice:
1.
Please keep close contact especially during the first turns. Make sure your mail reaches the following player and contact the player before you in the row if something goes wrong.
2.
Put a note down here each time you send the turn on to the next player (also at least during the first turns).
Good luck to everyone, may the force be with you. :) My start was a bit disappointing. I hoped for some fish near my starting location so I could build a fishing boat (strategically perfect situation for the Spanish), but my hopes were not fulfilled
@sabrewolf
Sorry, wrong guess. I'm neither Bavarian nor Badener. I've been born in Westphalia, grown up on the Baltic Sea Coast and am now living in Württemberg. There must be some gypsie blood running in my family. :)

January 3, 2006, 13:08
Well, the good news is that I'm trying to preserve the pace of the game.
The bad news is that I've got a problem. :)
Essentially, I load the game up (Multiplayer-PlayByEmail-Load Game), and select the game - it informs me that "This game is protected to ensure that no changes have been made to your mod directory", I hit OK and it brings me back to the desktop.
I've not done any mods or anything like that.... can anyone help a poor Civ4 PBeM noob?
Canuck77
January 3, 2006, 13:10
I should add that I am at 1.52 patch level.
Claus
January 3, 2006, 13:13
Oups, I guess I know what's the matter.
I installed the German CivPatch from civilized.de which fixes several language bugs in the localized version. Maybe the game now "thinks" that my version is the original one and yours is modded (although I didn't activate that option you mention). Sorry, I forgot that. I will reinstall the game without that patch. It will take some moments, I will send the new file within half an hour or so.
And of course, we use the official patch 1.52.

BC3850 to Canuck.
Sorry, it took a bit to answer ... I had a Civ4 LAN with a friend yesterday, and after 19 hours of continuous play I desperately needed a handfull of sleep :)
By the way, for that LAN match we switched off the space race victory option. This made the game a lot more interesting. In my view the late game suffers from everybody just rushing to build those space craft components (one of the very few weeknesses in Civ4). All the other nice stuff like SDI, Internet, U.N. etc is hardly looked upon. Yesterday I almost won by diplomatic victory (only 7 votes missing out of some 600) which was the first time I really gave an eye to this interesting strategic option.
@sabrewolf:
The world map is set to "big" (or what was that again in English, I mean the second largest map possible, not the really big one).

Claus - I'm still a novice in the game... I'd love a bit of insight on how you shot forward like that so quickly?? :)
It's very simple - in these early stages of the game a difference of 15 or 20 points has no meaning at all. Eg, if you happen to find a tech in a barbarian village or if you build a new city then this alone might let you jump forward. From what I have experienced some kind of solid leadership requires being at least 150 points ahead.

Seriously, are the beasts tougher to deal with on higher difficulty levels or was it just bad luck? I would like to know because there's a wolf outside my city waiting for my attention.

Claus, the animals definitely get harder on higher difficulty levels, because on lower ones you get better bonuses against them. However, in my case, it was purely bad luck. Had a warrior in the woods. The lion should totally have been toast. :)
That's ok, though. The random number generator hasn't given me any love for the past couple of days... :) I slaughtered half of my army the other day in this one game... Every single one died with 65%+ odds of winning. It was quite a sad sight. :)

be happy... AI civs are pretty kind. you can easily defend a city with only a warrior, while a human neighbor will take you out ;)

sabrewolf
January 30, 2006, 10:56
canuck: we're playing on noble level... and the easiest way to expand there is by letting the AI grow quickly and then take him out in a swift move. "organic growth" is really slow.

BTW - while we wait for Sabre's turn...
I'm an old vet from the Alpha Centauri days, and it was standard practice for everyone to email their password to either a single person who was not in the game, or someone who was not immediately before them in the turn progression. The idea was to protect the other players of the game from people who inevitably dropped out in the course of playing - either because of real life, or because they were falling behind in the game, or simply lost interest.
This game is moving along really well (REALLY well, actually), but I thought I'd ask if it makes sense here. Has anything like that been worked out at all?

Indeed, it's like sabre said, the ability for the person who knows the Admin password to kick players (they will be replaced by AIs) is quite a useful addition. :):b: (Sadly, we've already had to make use of it in one game I'm in, but that did save it from imminent death.)

I'm glad, too, that there is that possibility with a supervisor pw, even though I'm optimistic we won't have to use it.
When we played SMAC we had a similiar backup system which was quite simple, but useful: We gave our pw to the next person in the turn order.
