View Full Version : 3 players for a PBEM game
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 07:24
Hello.
I'm looking for 3 people for a PBEM game.
It will be a duel size map (the smallest) with the "Great Plains" mapscript. 4 human players total. No AI's.
Since this will be my very first multiplayer Civ experience, I'd prefer if not only pro's sign up ;)
All settings will be standard.
/Morten a.k.a. MortVader
The players:
MortVader (Kublai Khan)
polarnomad (Peter)
marcsterix (random)
John-SJ (Napoleon)

Hi,
Sure, I'll join in on the fun. Should we pick leaders, or will you be setting the game up with random leaders?
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 09:39
Hmm yeah, pick your leaders & supply your emailadresses (maybe you should do that by PM, or at least obscure it)
I think I will go for Kublai Khan :]~
edit: Kublai, not Ghengis :)
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 09:50
All right then, I will choose Napolean this time, and my email address is:
jdulleck (at) pacbell (dot) net
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 10:00
Hey sure, I'll join in also.
I'll take a random leader.
I'm marco at rentalrobots dot com
Later

MortVader
November 15, 2005, 10:12
Excellent :)
Now we just need the last one!
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 13:55
What the heck! I've never tried a PBEM, so... bare with me if I screw it all up! ;) (ie: someone'd better explain how it works...)
I'll pick Peter. I however would prefer to PM my email to you. Which I will do directly after posting this.
Am prepared to be beaten!:cute:
EDIT: um, silly me... Do I need to send PMs to all of the involved players with my email, or is one PM to MortVader going to suffice? (You guys are probably thinking, "Oh boy! This'll be a fun game!")
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 14:15
And we're off! ;D
I've made my turn and sent it off to John-SJ.
I've never tried a PBEM either. Not in Civ, anyways.
You can open your turns by clicking directly on the file attachment, when your turn arrives by email.
If for some reason (fx. hotmail?) it dont work; deploy the file somewhere you can find it: example C:\saves or whereever. Then load the game from Civ. When you've done your turn, it will send automaticly. You do have to provide your smtp server to do that, though. But this should be a one time thing, I hope?
Click ALT-D ingame to enter your smtp-server information. Also don't forget to create a password in this section, so that you can feel certain that only YOU will open your turns.
Edit for Polarnomad: It was enough that I got your mail-address ;)
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 14:26
Ok, thx. I'll let you know if I have trouble.
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 14:32
Mort,
I am at work right now but I just checked my email, I have not yet received your turn. Are you sure the turn was sent cuccessfully?
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 14:37
Yeah.. at least it said so ingame. I will resend the turn manually right away!
Oh, and when you get it, maybe you can check if I misspelled your email ingame? (ALT-D)
/Morten
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 14:48
Okay, I got the second one, and it appears to have arrived right on the heals of the first. Oh well, the first email seemed to have been a little slow I guess.
I will play this when I get home from work. :)
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 14:58
Shall be interesting to see how this game will work out since we'll be sending it back and forth across the pond.
@John-SJ: I'm not sure what order it's going to go in, but if you still can control who it goes to after you, perhaps marcsterix should be next in line. That way it only crosses timezones half as often.
EDIT: Although, now that I look at the time associated with marcsterix's username I wonder if he actually is on your side of the pond... UK?
2nd EDIT: marcsterix corrected his timezone! ;)
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 15:05
What?? you don't have CIV loaded at work???
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 15:05
From previous PBEM games I know that the turn order is already set, when I save the turn it will have the name of the next player on it already.
That being said, it is still not too late (if we agree that we should) to restart the game with turn order taking time zones into account.
If we should decide to restart, I am GMT - 8, U.S. Pacific time.
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 15:06
The turncycle is set in stone:
1. MortVader (Kublai Khan)
2. John-SJ (Napoleon)
3. marcsterix (random)
4. polarnomad (Peter)
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 15:07
That's fine with me...I'm Central US Standard time...

LOL! No, sorry, I do consider keeping my job somewhat important. :D
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 15:09
Okay, I will redo the turncycle right away!
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 15:09
Actually that would work, because me and John can play our turns one after the other during the day (well, one of us can :) ) in US times zone, and you guys play consecutively during European Time zone... It's not going back and forth more than once a round!
yey
:)
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 15:13
Actually, it is maybe a little better if marc and I were reversed in order since marc is 2 hours later than me.
Now and then (on weekdays) I may complete a turn in late afternoon, but most often it will be probably around mid evening, after I get some dinner.
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 15:15
Actually, I'm Central time...and I generally play during work :P (well, I can squeeze a turn during daytime).
polarnomad

The current turncycle seems to work out just fine, so no need to change anything.:)
EDIT: Ignore this post... I somehow missed that John-SJ suggested a switch in turn order.
MortVader
November 15, 2005, 15:24
Okay then! :)
So I've remade the game:
1. MortVader (europe)
2. polarnomad (europe)
3. marcsterix (us)
4. John-SJ (us)
Polarnomad; the turn should be in your hands by now! :D
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 15:32

Hi,
I'm interested in playing. I have a little multi-player experience but not much and have about 15 hours of single player time on CIV4. Howq often will you be playing turns?
Andy
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 15:44
Ok, feeling like a dumby here... I have the game with my turn up and running. Click ALT-D and go to input my smtp info, but then I think... erm.. hotmail...? smtp.hotmail.com?
nyy13andy
November 15, 2005, 15:45
Didn't read the whole thread. Maybe next time.
marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 15:47
I don't know if it will work if you try sending it through hotmail...CIV has a lot of issues when trying to send email in-game...
polarnomad
November 15, 2005, 15:52
I have another email account for which I know the smtp server info. Can I just input that? Or do I need to change the email address from the hotmail to that one too?

marcsterix
November 15, 2005, 19:46
I got it ok and sent it off to John :)
John-SJ
November 15, 2005, 20:20
:(
Uh, something is wrong. I got the turn from marc, played it, and when I saved the turn it asked me to send it to marc.
Here is the save file here, but I believe it should be going to MortVader, right?
MortVader
November 16, 2005, 01:29
That must be a bug :(
But when I opened the file, the turn WAS for me.. :P
Next time you finish your turn, see if you can remember changing the email-send-to-adress to mine (civ-at-mortenlassen-dot-dk) when it pops up right before sending.
Polarnomad, you're up!
polarnomad
November 16, 2005, 02:10

marcsterix
November 16, 2005, 09:43

All I have to say, is I gotta lotta cows around here.
MortVader
November 16, 2005, 16:17
So quit your thoughts on world domination, and start a cattle-franchise instead ;D
John-SJ
November 16, 2005, 20:22
Houston, we have a problem.
This time when I took my turn (player John-sj) I was asked to send my turn to JOHND. I am posting a screenshot of this, I understand that I am revealing my start position, but, so be it.
Shouldn't we just start over anyway?
polarnomad
November 16, 2005, 22:10
JOHND? Who kidnapped MortVader?
John-SJ
November 16, 2005, 23:12
LOL!
The strange thing that I forgot to mention, JOHND is my computer's name, and my default profile name in CIV.
MortVader
November 17, 2005, 00:40
Well, I vote we continue.
It appears that there are still bugs in civ. But when I loaded the turn, everything looked right. Except that John-SJ has a warrior just outside my borders :)~
polarnomad
November 17, 2005, 02:30
Well geez... This sure is a small map! I knew it was going to be small, but this is crazy.:scared:
You're up marcsterix.
MortVader
November 17, 2005, 06:08
Yeah, we used to do this in another 4x game I played years ago (called Stars!). Extremely tiny map compared to amount of players. Always makes for an interesting yet not terribly prolonged game.
John-SJ
November 17, 2005, 09:42
OMG! Stars!?
I used to love that game! Seldom played PBEM though. One of my biggest disappointments in gaming was that the Stars! 2 project died. I was so looking forward to playing that one. :(
Oh, and, Howdy Neighbor! :D
MortVader
November 17, 2005, 10:04
Yir yir! Stars was an EXCELLENT 4x game. The AI sucked bigtime though. But the simultaneous execution model was far superior to the old fashioned modes that CIV uses.
Don't misunderstand me, though. I AM a great fan of CIV. ;)
But heck yeah; it was a disaster when the supernova project died.. :´(

November 17, 2005, 11:02
I am interested in joining. Played Civ original a long time ago, dabbled with Civ 2 and never played Civ 3 or CTP. Just started Civ 4 a few days ago and more than happy to try PBEM Multiplayer. PM or better still message me on MSN cersei69@hotmail.com or yahoo otcie

Turn to MortVader
marcsterix
November 17, 2005, 19:40
Wow, I didn't realize it was that small of a map...I think this will be really interesting :)
By the way, I have to say orginizing the order of play between us seems to have really made a difference...wish I had considered that when starting up my other pbem game...
MortVader

November 19, 2005, 11:31
Oops sorry guys! I didn't realize I sent him the wrong game! It turns out that John_SJ plays after me in the other pbem game we're in (and it's the same date also!).
My bad :(
I set the correct one now

I'm Morten. 34 years old. Living with my wife and daughter (3 yrs) in Vadum, Denmark. Played civ since the first incarnation, but never tried a multiplayer before this one.

November 22, 2005, 09:42
Hello Morten! I'm Sergio. 30 years old. Half Finn, half Yank. Moved back to Finland from California about 2 1/2 years ago. Live alone and work as an on-call truck driver. Played CivI some back in high school, later alot of CtP. Currently regretting a stupid decision I made in the first turn of this game!
marcsterix
November 22, 2005, 09:56
Hey guys, I'm 33 Italian living in Texas...just moved back here from Italy. This is my first time playing a pbem (well, I have another civ4 pbem going concurrently with this one...but started almost at the same time).
Before civ came out on the computer, there was a Civilization board game published by Avalon Hill I played a few times with some friends...I'm glad I got a chance to play head to head with other ppl at this game after so much time....although I'm regretting my choice of [random] civ now... :(
PS, hey Sergio...wheres my turn? :)
Marco

You didn't get it? I'll play my turn again. Sorry for the delay.

November 22, 2005, 15:11
Actually I got it a few minutes after you posted your reply, but then I got caught up in work and forgot to update the forum! sorry...anyway John should have it already...
:D
polarnomad
November 22, 2005, 15:39
Ok, cool.:)
I agree that it is nice to play against other people. As for regretting your choice of random civ... I don't think Peter was the best choice for a duel map with 4 players either, so... we'll just hash it out anyway!;)

Hey Morten, for some reason I got a second copy of turn 3600BC (yesterday's) from you this morning.
MortVader
November 24, 2005, 00:55
yes, I got that same thing from John, so.. couldn't think of better thing to do at this hour of day :P
John-SJ
November 24, 2005, 08:33
:)
I checked my received emails, I recieved the 3640 BC save on both Tuesday and Wednesday. No matter.
Hey, MortVader, the patch is out. How shall we coordinate the use of the patch so that we transition smoothly?
MortVader
November 24, 2005, 09:04
Hmm.. I am not sure. I vote we install the patch, and see what happens... ?
Come to think of it.. we simply have to install the patch, all of us. I dont think any of us are interested in NOT installing it until this game is finished. IF the game doesn't work after patching, we must start over... your views?
John-SJ
November 24, 2005, 10:58
Agreed. If that is the prevailing view, should the next to play just install it and post here that save_nnnn is with the patch so we will know that now is the time to install it?
MortVader
November 24, 2005, 11:31
yes sir!

polarnomad
November 24, 2005, 12:26
Seems I'm not the only one trying to download this patch... Gonna take a while. :)
MortVader
November 24, 2005, 12:37
yeah. I say install the patch, make your turn and let's all do the same. See what happens... :)
polarnomad
November 24, 2005, 13:05
um... you mean redo my turn from yesterday?
MortVader
November 24, 2005, 13:19
Yeah. The latest one you got ;)
polarnomad
November 24, 2005, 14:44
Farfegnüggen! Since I've installed the patch it won't let me get past my password... so I can't even access the game to redo my turn.
polarnomad
November 25, 2005, 01:28
Y'all went kind of quiet on me...
*checks your pulses*
MortVader
November 25, 2005, 09:47
oh great.. so we start over. Is everybody still with us, then? That is, you all want to start over? Same specs. Choose your new leaders if you want.
I think I'll take Cyrus this time over..
polarnomad
November 25, 2005, 10:48
Sure I'm willing to start over. I'll take Catherine this time. Can we change the map size to tiny though? If you'd rather not that's fine too.
MortVader
November 25, 2005, 10:52
I prefer duel-size since it will make the game relatively short (this IS pbem). I will go with tiny though, if the majority wants it.
polarnomad
November 25, 2005, 11:01
I see your point.:b:
MortVader
November 25, 2005, 11:40
but where did the american-flag guys go?
marcsterix
November 25, 2005, 11:45
Hmmm, I just played my turn before applying the patch...then I installed the patch...then I read this post. Oops.
Anyway, I don't think it should affect the save, but it would be a good idea for everyone to upgrade anyway.
Happy Thanksgiving (belated).
polarnomad
November 25, 2005, 11:55
So, then the turn would be with John-SJ...
@John-SJ: Did you apply the patch? If so, are you able to access the save?
John-SJ
November 25, 2005, 12:08
Okay, I have not installed the patch yet until I found what is going on with PBEM games. It doesn't sound good.
But I am not willing to put off the patch indefinitely for PBEM games (I am involved in others besides this one) because I see a real benefit to my single player games as well.
So, I will try an experiment. I will attempt to open and play the save pre-patch, then apply the patch and repeat the experiment.
Oh, and I have no problem restarting this game if it will be restarted as a patch-player game.
John-SJ
November 25, 2005, 12:53

Well, I get the same thing. After the patch I cannot get beyond the password prompt.
If we are going to restart, I suppose there is no real reason to pass on the unpatched save, right?
There is one thing that might be worth trying. Can the game admin reset the password of each player to no password? I doubt it will work but it might be worth a try.
*SIGH*
MortVader
November 25, 2005, 13:05
Well, there is nothing I can do either... :P I can't even load my turn after patching..
Tell me what leaders you want for the restart, and I'll setup the game.. again..
John-SJ
November 25, 2005, 13:11
Okay, I will stick with Napoleon, thanks. :)
MortVader
November 26, 2005, 06:21
1. MortVader (Cyrus)
2. polarnomad (Catherine)
3. marcsterix (Kublai Khan)
4. John-SJ (Napoleon)
So who will it be, marcsterix? I take it NOT rnd this time? ;)
marcsterix
November 26, 2005, 10:51
Kublai Khan, I had set a pw too, so restart it is... :D
(I was about to be beaten to a pulp anyway... :))
MortVader
November 26, 2005, 11:17
Ok, I've now restarted the game. Same turn-order as before, leaders was chosen as you can see 2 posts up.
I forgot choosing the "great-plains" script, so we are playing the "balanced" one. I hope you don't mind. I didn't want to enter all the player details again, for that. As you may know, this means that now the world is round. Not flat like before ;)
polarnomad has the ball!

You know, it would be cool if we could set a time where we all get online to play some of these turns out quickly. Like right now, I've explored as much as I can...all I'm doing is passing turns till my next unit comes out :(
polarnomad
December 26, 2005, 09:19
Merry Christmas all you guys! So, are we going to continue this game after the Christmas break? or is there something amiss?
marcsterix
December 28, 2005, 13:37
3040BC :b:
Even with this update they still haven't fixed the emailing issue...this time it freezes up on me if I try mailing from the game... :(
polarnomad
December 28, 2005, 18:29
When I email from within the game it pauses momentarily and then says "message sent successfully". Are you on an older computer that is just taking longer?
MortVader
December 31, 2005, 09:36
I am temporarily offline due to an untimely ISP change. I will be back in a week or so. I'm sorry guys, but I have no choice.. :P
MortVader
January 11, 2006, 07:51

marcsterix
January 11, 2006, 09:38
I don't know...I think we were waiting for your ISP change. Last turn I sent was 3040BC. Who played the last turn?
polarnomad

polarnomad
January 17, 2006, 08:41

We could always start a new one... again.
MortVader
January 22, 2006, 07:14
well, honestly.. if I were to invest my time in another pbem (where options to shift players with AI is non-existing) -it would have to be with people I know..
