sorry to intrude, you will want to make the first player in a PBEM as AI, then retire the civ after one turn.

There's a bug in cIV which doesn't allow the first player to trade techs. We just found out and needed to restart several PBEMs.

Addled Platypus
November 12, 2005, 21:11
I just tried that-no can do

I am guessing who ever sets up has to be first to play

Shogun Gunner
November 12, 2005, 21:18
right, you could have nine players and player 1 plays 1 and 2...just retire the civ on the first turn.

Addled Platypus
November 12, 2005, 21:21
so the first two spots can be human as well

Shogun Gunner
November 12, 2005, 21:29
yes, i should have read the OP more carefully - i see you all don't want AI in the game. so, both positions human and the first player plays both turns, retiring "player1" position on the first turn.

one thing you have to really watch here

Masuro

in two games with you both go to a folder called "PC"

I created a folder for mag-8

but it looks to be something we may need to address community wide to be careful and name the game as when you start getting into a lot of games the saves dont come in marked so it becomes increasingly more difficult to decipher what save is for what game

Would anyone like a restart to fix the folder/game name problem? I can see how it might create problems a little later as people get involved in more games. We're still at 4000 BC so it's not like we are losing much.

because of game name

you see, many of us here are in several games

and as game progresses it will become much more confusing:confused:

the game was being saved in a folder called pc as were at least one other game

3960 B.C. forwarded to Masuro.

Oddly, I have exactly the same start as the original game, and it still saves in the PC folder. I emailed Platypus (who is before me in the turn order) and he confirmed the same thing. Is it possible that someone earlier emailed the wrong turn to their next in line?

i really don't care about that folder name. let's at least play for a while and maybe later it can be fixed... and if not... so what, we'll take it from the "PC" folder ;)

Huh? Is opening directly from the email attachment somehow a bad choice? It seems to me that if you open from the attachment there is no chance of accidentally picking the wrong save-game from the ingame load game dialog.

Actually you have not yet received the savegame from the game that was called "Magnificent Eight". As John-SJ mentioned, his startposition was the same as the one in our first try. So the savegames have been mixed up at some point.
I just checked the dates of the savegames I sent to sabrewolf and I am absolutely sure, that I have sent the right savegame. And Sabrewolf already said that he also sent the right save.

sabrewolf

I would like to make a suggestion that may save us all some time and further frustration.

Unless you currently have a save for this game that you have not sent yet, just delete ALL saves so that there is no chance in the future of sending the wrong one. Or, if you would rather not delete them just move them all to a different save folder, one that will not be confused with the real one.

This may be a bit of an extreme measure, but it could end up benefitting all of us. :)

don't know,... but in this thread (http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=144021) somebody posted about it and markG censored it out. and the main page does not seem to mention it. to me it seems like they had a glitch and did not want to go through the same fiasko they had in C3C in one of the patches (1.16 or so, iirc) which was completely broken and had to be patched again a few days after

I believe the best thing to do would be to wait for the patch to be available for auto-update. When it is available for one it will be available for all, so whoever is the first to play after the patch goes live, just let the patcher do its thing and everyone after will then do the same.

I don't get it. It's the same game right? Why can't you just d/l the patch from Apolyton, or better yet, use the check for update feature in CIV and d/l it from the publisher? Why is it necessary to wait for direct2disk?

sabrewolf
November 27, 2005, 07:41
masuro: the "using CD" part is really annoying, especially as my small travel notebook doesn't have an internal drive and external ones are too resource hungry to be USB-powered.

but there always are alternative methods, such as *cough*no*cough*cd thingies. or the "do it yourself" version of that (create an image of the DVD/CDs, mount it, play)

That would probably be the easiest way to solve the problems.
But we should wait until Masuro has access to the patch.

I wonder if perhaps I should bow out as well. I don't know when the patch will come and, if there are several patches for this game, we will have to repeat these long delays several times.

this is YOUR thread, so we'll hang along with you.
and if we really cannot wait, we can always start our own game :p

Yeah. But it's really expensive because it's a direct import (Civ4 isn't officially released here yet).

Oh, found it at YesAsia for US $42.99 but it's the DVD version. Arrghh . . . . .

Grandpa Troll

had d2d speculated when they will have the working patch?

marcuspeddle
November 27, 2005, 18:43
I've been checking their site but no word yet.
The patch isn't even on the official Civ4 site yet. I guess they use fan sites as testing grounds before releasing to the general (i.e. non-fanatical) public.

any way of retiring the vast Empire Masuro or let it be run by AI?

I am trying to bribe another sub, let you know shortly

I could press alt-q in my latest turn and then send the save on.

uhm, masuro... have you seen this link: http://planetcivilization.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Patches.Detail&id=26 ?

it looks like the D2D patch already exists :) but only since about 2-3 days...

Found it this morning. :)

Who has the turn?

sabrewolf

i thought we had to restart due to the password issue.
however, masuro, if you didn't have a password set, maybe you can try loading your latest turn?

Since Gargamel has quit the game, I suggest we start over with a Magnificent Seven game. A fresh start is always good. The PBEM trading bug was fixed, right?

sabrewolf

afaik yes... at least i have not heard anybody grumbling about this anymore...

I just loaded up a pre-patch single player game and everything worked fine. Some people said they had trouble after patching so I was a bit worried. The game seems to be running more smoothly.

Well gents,

I was in 12 pbems, and now that the incredible geniuses at Firaxis or 2k or whever the bureaucracy of this game screwed up, every one of the 12 games is unplayable due to several issues:

unable to enter pw and press enter,
pw's are no longer needed and when I enter the game, it just sits there saying waiting for other civilizations,
unable to perform any actions... game is frozen.

Looks like every pbem has to be scrapped, and I will not be starting any new ones, because I'm sure the so called geniuses at Firaxis and 2k or wherever will have overseen these issues and any new ones which will rise up at the next patch... until they make us buy an add on pack, which of course will have to be patched at least 2 times, before they make us buy another add on pack, which of course will have to be patched 2 times before civ5 comes out promising better things.... lol, and we're the idiots who buy these games and get addicted to them. What geniuses.

Sorry to see you go but I can certainly understand your frustration. I purposely didn't start many PBEM games because I was afraid this kind of thing would happen.

Do we go with Magnificent 6 or just say bugger it?

sabrewolf
December 2, 2005, 02:56
i vote for "try again"!

unlike E_V i only lost 3 games which were in average at turn 4 or so... so a shame, but not a tragedy.

Okay. There are only six of us now. What size map would you like to try? My system handles small maps very well and spends a lot of time churning through large maps. Standard? Small? On a small map we will probably get 3 or 4 cities each.

sabrewolf
December 2, 2005, 03:09
6 in small is a bit tight. although, it will make early warfare more likely and resource distribution less optimal (someone is bound to not have copper, iron and horses and is screwed)

Grandpa Troll
December 2, 2005, 06:58
well

it is a game

I simply restarted the games that were unplayable

I vote to move forward

@ Emperor V

After the patch killed the first PBEM games I lost interest, really. Single player was interesting for a couple of weeks but soon became dull. Not because the game is bad but because I was playing Civ 3 for a couple of years and it is more or less the same (though improved in many respects).

Im having a blast

Perhaps next year sometime. When they get the pit boss thing set up.

sabrewolf

although i tell myself that i prefer civ4, i must admit that civ3 was more addictive in SP.
but still... PBEMs are a must :)
