Welcome, fellow team members of Desolation Row.
The rest of you can bugger off right now
Ok, here is our very own discussion thread (until we get our own forum) to talk about things such as leaderhead name, and vital important issues in the wheels of progress such as team noun, team adjective, team philosophy, team sponsors, team shoes, and team diet and any special team recipes.

we have a team thread?
my opinions:
Map Settings:
Ocean: 60% (with 6 players on small it's too squashed otherwise)
Age: 3 or 4 billion years
Water: wet
Temperature: warm
Other:
Figurehead: something hairy?
Goal: victory!
Colour: is black possible? ;) otherwise some dark grey?
i the other things do not really matter to me.

can someone enlighten me how we are going to play?
- we are spread pretty well around the world to guarantee the round being played in time. but... when do we know if we should play the round or wait for captain aqualung?
- it is clear that strategic decisions are made democratically. but how about the more specific stuff, eg. build order? and what about the detailed stuff such as scouting warriors, city micromanagement, etc?
- turnchats? if we use them, what to use? IRC? MSN? ICQ? skype?
i havn't joined a DG since the first one using civ3 vanilla. that was against the AI only and imho each turn got discussed to death.

Welcome aboard Mas ;)
MSN is good, I use it too.
As for how to play the turns, it falls to me as team leader to take the main responsibility for actual playing of the turns. However, I can guarantee that I won't be able to play them every day, in which case someone else will need to step in, so that then depends on timing.
My best time for playing is early in the morning or at night, so probably GMT2300-2400 or GMT 1200-1600. If I don't manage to play the turn I can easily email the turn to any one of you from work (where I can't play the turn). Discussions on strategy, etc, should be via email. For more detailed stuff such as build queues we should probably setup MSN chat times to discuss build priorities and worker job assignments for the next 5 turns or so.
Micromanagement is something we need to focus on, since we can be sure the other teams will be good at it, so we need to get it right.
Comments, suggestions?

I'm off work until March so except from about GMT 15.00 to 2400 I'll be able to take place in discussions or play the turn.

Hi guys.
I vote for standard map. ;)
Definitely want black, our leaderhead ought to be the Grim Reaper.

hi guys
after solomwi's icons, i decided to try one of my own.
it probably doesn't show very well, but it should be a skull with crossed bones (like a pirate flag)
i used this as base drawing: http://www.bilderberg.org/weekly.jpg
if you like the idea, i can do some more pixel editing to make things clearer. the DR is quite small at the moment. using different colors could make it more readable. but imho black and gray are "our" colors.
input/feedback?

here the inverse version, except that i kept the central part black. although it's not as clear anymore, it's possibly a bit more "spooky"

It'll be good if you can get it a bit clearer.
By the way, please take the masuro33 at hotmail dot com off your mailing lists. I think the euphrates address will be fine.

or - last for the moment - a simple one.
the space beneath could also be used for something else. a pentagram, a upside-down-cross, ...

Whichever design we choose, I think black letters on a grey background is clearer and more attractive.

Sabre, I LOVE the skull and crossbones - it depicts us perfectly.....the first design is more striking, but the second design I think is clearer.
And I agree with Trip.....black or dark grey colour.

Can we use the Grim Reaper for our leaderhead? Like, get a gif or jpeg sized correctly and substitute it for the Persian leaderhead in the Conquests folders? :hmmm:
How's this? ;)
sabrewolf
February 1, 2005, 18:07
great picture :D
i could resize it but i don't think anybody will replace their leaderheads in the local folders. and we don't see our own figure :(
but let us use it for our threads :b:

I especially like the skull & crossbones, and agree that black on silver/gray background looks best (but of course, I'm a Raider fan, so that's to be expected ;)). I'm good with any map settings, and see my sig for my vote on goal and philosophy.
For any of you unfamiliar with the NFL's Oakland Raiders (even though this one's gray on black, it's on a silver helmet, which serves to pretty much reverse the effect)...

I also say no to the Oakland Raiders. I'd say yes to Miami Dolphins though, if it didn't make us all look like nancy-boys
Back to one of Sabre's skull and crossbone logos I say. I think the one with the white background is more striking.

Ahh, so this is what I get for underestimating the NFL's appeal. ;)
To be clear, I just wanted to make sure you damn furriners knew what I meant when I claimed Raiderfandom. :D
Btw snoopy, if the Bears wind up with Ronnie Brown in the first round, you'll be seeing me as a Bears fan, too. ;)

the only NFL we ever get to see here is the super bowl. and that's usually too late and too long to watch. i think the only game i ever saw to the end was about 6 years ago (green bay packers vs. ??) where there was a 98 yard punt return  (don't kill me if i am using the wrong expressions)
but to be honest... american football is imho nothing more than rugby (imho tough sport) with lots of breaks and paddings. i prefer "real" rugby ;) ...
but enough OT from me. ronnie brown as name? are you sure? ;)
about the skull icon(s): in that case i'll start doing some pixel editing to make it slightly more distiguishable.

ok, quit the irrelevant NFL chat.
I've emailed you all on some important items to finalise. Please respond either here or by email, cos we need to tell Snoop and OPD how we wish to be addressed for all eternity!

PM snoopy with the results when you're ready. if not everybody has answered, too bad. i doubt the names will be a killer criterium for anyone here.

Hi, you've all sent mail to my Hotmail address. I wanted you to take that address off your mailing list. Please send mail to euphrates at kornet dot net.
As for names, the ones Aqualung suggested seem good to me. ^^

February 4, 2005, 11:08
Yes, the stuff A has suggested is good.

February 5, 2005, 14:37
Okay ... i haven't seen a final decision on the civgroup logo yet, but it looked like you liked black skull/bones on gray background... I made one (filling in the white with 190,190,190 (75) gray) and attached it here. I'm going to call it your 'default' icon, unless you give me a different one. :)
marcuspeddle
February 5, 2005, 21:10
That looks good. :)

February 6, 2005, 08:23
personally, i would prefer slightly brighter background for better distinction, but i'm happy with this one too (thanks snoopy :b: !)
sabrewolf
February 6, 2005, 08:39
here i used RGB 204,204,204 as a comparison...
sabrewolf
February 6, 2005, 08:41
oh, damn... because of the different backgrounds at poly, now it looks like there is none.
shall i do a transparent BG version? then there would only be skull+bones+text ontop of whatever ugly colors people have chosen for their apolyton layout ;)
Aqualung71
February 6, 2005, 09:48
Sabre, we'll delegate it to you to work out with Snoop which one to use. Any of the skull & crossbones you've suggested so far are fine by me :)
snoopy369
February 6, 2005, 13:34
Actually I delegate to sabre to talk to MarkG if he wants it changed. I can't do anything more about it, am not even sure it's changeable ... you all just weren't online at the right time so i had to do my best ;)

February 7, 2005, 02:07
i have suspected in other events that PMs can disappear into limbo without either the PMer nor the PMee knowing about it :(
email? :)
