Sometimes I win at monarch level.

Any games out there ?

Sixpack
October 9, 2004, 08:12
I'm probably the same level and looking for a game too.

snakegurl
October 9, 2004, 13:02
Maybe if some others wandered by, we could start a game of our own. Which civ interests you ?.... I fancy those Panzers if I last long enough.

seeing as this is snakegurl's show, she's got to decide how many players, what difficulty settings and whatnot. i suggest everyone find the ettiquette guide and read it.

snakegurl
October 10, 2004, 06:40
The etiquette guide should be found as the subject :
"The PBEM Info Thread" in this forum. Sorry I tried to copy the link but couldnt.

We seem to have five people interested, so I reckon that's enough unless anyone else signs on in the meantime, in which case they would be welcome.
If anyone is up for it then maybe you should say so and also mention the civ you would prefer.
I'd prefer the Germans.
In the meantime i'll mug up on what needs to be done to get this moving.
I suggest that each person has a day to get their move done, I can only get my turns done in the evening and I live in the UK. I guess anyone else who is working is similarly constrained.
If anyone has any experience/suggestions about the play mechanics then please say so.

Sixpack
October 10, 2004, 11:14
My brother has been playing PBEM's for a while. Normally the turn order is organised by time zones. For us that would be:

snakegurl, GMT, Germans
Yamamoto, GMT,
selfbiased, GMT-5 (allthough Poland should be GMT+2)
sixpack, GMT+1, Hittites

4 people should allow for a good paced game. Maybe 1 more for the extra fun.
Small map, temperate, 5 billion years, Pangea should
work.

snakegurl
October 10, 2004, 12:12
Sounds good to me, Sixpack.

If we have difficulty level =, say, Monarch then anyone interested please confirm your civ and pm me your email address then we can get started.

I take it that we don't include AI civs unless anyone posts a good reason to the contrary.

Soltz
October 10, 2004, 12:33
With more 'real' people in the game, there's potential for stalls, etc. when RL intrudes.

If you need a substitute later for somebody away on holidays, etc., I'd be available to fill in.

snakegurl
October 10, 2004, 13:01
Soltz, you can count yourself in from the start if you want. No else has sent their email to me by way of signing on yet ! Which civ do you want ?

OK Folks

Is Accel Prod on ? I think DanielXY has a point and I've seen this on other game threads, so I'd vote yes on that one. Please can I have a show of hands and comments on it ?

Thanks Modo, BTW, who has sent his email address,... still waiting for the others...

Modo44

I don't know a thing about accelerated production - have never played with it. My concern here is, I don't know how much this option changes the game. I'm new to PBEM, so learning to deal with human players and with accelerated production in the same game might be too much. Or is it just a simple speed-up, not changing general strategies?

DanielXY
October 11, 2004, 13:54
Well all it does is: You got half the shild cost for everything (improvments and units.. with 5 shilds net prod. you can produce a spearman in 2 turns for example) + your citys will grow at a doubled rate. (if you got the standard 2 food surplus a size 1 city will grow in 5 turns instead of 10).

So I dont think it changes strategy too much, just speeding up everything :)

Modo44
October 11, 2004, 14:29

If Granpa Troll wants a game then please get with it.
Anyone who hasn't forwarded their email address yet, please do so now. I expect to get the game started this evening (6 hours time from now)

When I do so I'll post the start on this thread. I assume that we won't be including combat reports..... comments please if you disagree.

self biased

sounds good, although make sure everyone has access to everyone else's email addy. i'm going to assume no contact out of game until contact in game?

Modo44
October 12, 2004, 12:57
The basic PBEM ethiquette is described in the Info thread in this forum ( here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112863 ). I think we can stick to those guidelines, except for the battle reports? What do you think, snakegurl?

Beta
October 12, 2004, 13:30
Six is a good number for pbem. Just do NOT make it a large map. And no AI's. That heavily favours those that start near the AI.

Small map still works for six. Or standard. Personally - I would vote for small, but I am easy either way.

And I concur - no battle reports.

snakegurl
October 12, 2004, 14:45
I agree Folks, sounds good, NO AI civs, no battle reports, etiquette as per suggestions. I'll email everyone's address to all players. No other contact than for game mechanics until we meet in game.

Only one problem, sorry if I missed it, but I need email addresses for both Sixpack and Beta... come on folks, we're waiting to play

Sorry about the multiple posts.

Any other Newbie on V1.0 you'll need to get into the Apolyton.com civ3 page and click on Civ3 patches.
Download and install the v1.22 appropriate to your version of Civ3 - by which I mean that the US version is incompatible with European versions.
Otherwise you'll not be able to load the game.

I had the old version, but I've restarted and emailled to Beta, again

Sorry about the delay

E-mail resent. You probably had the right address. This account sometimes hits its (fairly small) limit in the evenigs, before all the spam is deleted by the server. I just emptied it manually.

[edit]
I checked the account via WWW and it turns out they have a new option that increases the limit. Unfortunately I didn't know until now, having told Mozilla that messages from my server's administration were spam. :idiot:

No more limit warnings should occur.

Beta
October 14, 2004, 20:07
No, the issue was a slight error in your e-mail address. I had 'net' as opposed to 'onet'.

Anyone elese intereseted in a restart? My start wasn't too great and as we're going to be stuck to this games for months...

snakegurl
October 17, 2004, 07:39
I dont mind, but I feel there should be a unanimous vote in favour for me to act on it.
I prefer to continue even though my first turns weren't perfect either.
What do the rest of you folks think ?

Modo44
October 17, 2004, 07:43
I like my land, but I don't mind restarting if others wish to do so.

Beta
October 17, 2004, 10:13
I'm easy either way, as well. sixpack has a point, but then the problem is with the next game, someone else may get a bad start. This is why a number of pbem's use one of two methods:

1. a voting system for determining the 'overall' 'best' start - using some sort of rating system on the starts. (see Flandrien's random thread for an example. There have been others.)

2. A veto sytem where anyone can call for a restart in the first two turns.

In this case, for six pack, we would be adopting the second approach, and then it would only be fair if others had the same veto capability for subsequent starts. The problem here is that it may take us a while to get going. And we need to consider of you can only use your veto once.

But if folks want to adopt that approach, it is fine by me.

Sixpack
October 17, 2004, 16:36
Thanks for the understanding, I`d like to call the veto Beta proposed (option 2)

Beta
October 18, 2004, 07:09
snakegurl's game and her call.

I am easy either way.

As we did not agree to this prior to the start of the game, you may have to prepared to stick it out with the start you do have, sixpack. See it as a 'challenge', not a 'problem', as all those motivational books say.:D

snakegurl
October 18, 2004, 07:31
Seems easiest to stick with Beta's 2nd option.

Sixpack has vetoed our start, so I'll generate another start tonite.
Note folks, that we all have a veto to be used once only by each person on the first 2 turns.

If anyone else wants to exercise their veto I suggest they post it immediately on this thread and not send on the email. That'll save some time and disappointment.

Modo44
October 18, 2004, 08:17
