Beta, Beta, Beta....have you been being naughty lately?

It ain't me who started it. I placed a city down near a luxury close to the medean border - and I had a unit which was crossing near the edge of medean territory, but clearly not straight across the middle.

And then 'zap', my city is destroyed in an overt act of aggression that has clearly enraged the sentiments of this peace-loving world. Hence ...war. And as snoopy has so aptly stated:

Cry havoc! And let slip the dogs of war.

Save to the aforementioned snoopdog of war.

I am mearly responding to a defensive agreement I have with Beta.

I didn't want war, but Im definately willing to use force to end this disagreement.

And it is unfortunate overall because this is supposed to be a builder scenario :(

Wittlich
August 24, 2004, 15:51
Ah....so it all comes down to the control of a luxury item. :shame:

And by Beta's account, it looks like the first shot was fired by akulla. Can you confirm Beta's account akulla, or do you have a different story to tell? :conspire:

conmcb25
August 24, 2004, 15:54
I can confirm Beta's account.

Beta is nothing but a peace loving Sumarian Farmer trying to make his way in the world (with the assistance of the agricultural trait I might add).

Up to now he has really made nothing but Ploughs.

Now he is forced to beat them into swords.

I live right next to him and we have had nothing but cordial relations. We would have both been happy to attempt to build our way to victory.

Well - sort of. I think akulla's main issue was geography. But then - my perspective is - first come - first served.

con - thanks for your support. And yes - it has been a relatively peaceful game up until now. So maybe we should all thank akulla for spicing up the game. :cute:

Just to get one thing straight, I did fire the first shot (arrow).

You can call it coincidence or what ever you want - but both the Sumerians and Hittites entered my territory on the same turn and where both within one space of one of my cities. The military actions that I brought were within the boarders of my territory, and I was well within my Imperial Rights to protect my citizens from any raiding parties. If, no aggression was their intent then they should not have entered my territory.

There are two old Meadian proverbs I would now like to relate.

Should you wake from a slumber, and a stranger is in your home. “Shoot first, ask questions later”.

An old Hellian once said a picture is worth a thousand words, so I have attached a scroll that was traced from the memory of captured enemy soldiers. (see attached)

My question is why did they enter my territory, if they mean non-aggression?

I have no quarrel with the Bab’s and only want peace. I would behead the eunuch that negotiated your Defensive Agreement with the Sumerians; it was obviously bad counsel for the Sumerians are on the Offensive. Do you have an Offensive agreement with them?

The peace loving Meades only want peace, if the Sumerians and Hittites really want peace then I will grant it to them.

To my secret allies - my most profound gratitude and undying support for your causes. I shall sacrifice 1000 virgins in your honor.

No there was no offensive agreement but you did fire the first shot hence you are the aggressor.

The Hittites have been pretty pissy with me about my units in there territory. The issues have been resolved and there was no war.

I would hardly call one warrior and one Enkidu Warrior an act of aggression, but then thats me.

Talk first, then shot. Your ancient proverb may have just gotten you into an awful mess.

With regards to me starting it, I asked for them to leave and they did not. Perhaps, it would have been prudent for the French to ask Germany kindly leave France when the invaded and then perhaps not.

With regards to Peace I offer my hand in friendship to the Bab's.

akulla - I would buy your propaganda if you had killed my Enkidu Warrior. But you destroyed a city legitimately built outside your borders.

The warrior was passing through - and by himself could obviously do little harm. In fact - if I recall - I think he was caught by your cultural border expansion. I wioll have to revist the saves to confirm - but I was being fairly careful about keeping out of others territory.

So sorry - I don't buy your story - but it is a good one. :)

As to the Hittites entering on the same turn - well that is news to me - and not my issue.

On one thing we agree - I have always thought con was a eunuch as well.

It is that high-pitched whine of his, as in ... "You are lazy and suck" .. that had me wondering.

I don't know. Once a nation gets psyched up for a war, it is hard to get the 'machinery' turned off.

Now I never said you were threatening my existence... I think it was pretty much the other way around, ie me threatening your warrior's existence

No, I had a bit of work to do these last two days -- end of the month means more work than beginning of the month, so not as many saves could be played as fast as i normally would.

That, and I wanted to see whether the "Secret Allies" would show themselves. I for one am going to laugh at attempts at any seperate peace ... for the Noble Hittites have never backed down from a fight, nor have ever left an ally -- even a pigheaded one like Bountiful Babylon :p

Akulla, my warrior only entered your territory after the discovery that you had destroyed the city of a friend. A show of support must be made in situations like this, to show that you may not destroy innocent civilians without the Wrath of God falling down upon you. The noble Hittites have come to the aid of the Sumerians in defending themselves from invasion. "Agressor" to me means the one who initiates combat -- which is agreed are the Medeans. :nono: We appreciate the further aid of the Babylonians, who will undoubtedly prove helpful in punishing the wicked Medeans and their "secret" allies, who we think are perhaps not as secret as they think.

In reference to our scouting cavalry brigades, we sincerely hope that you believe the Hittite strength is limited to this in size. That will make the blow all the more deadly when it lands ... Or perhaps your "secret" allies are not as well informed, or as loyal, as you think? :hmmm:

Akulla - I regret to inform you that the Sumerian Senate has rejected your peace offering. This is not a matter of aggressor and agressee (??), but you broke the ice - which is very rare in these parts. Time for war.

God you Army guys are DENSE!

I have always said the Army is truely a lower form of life

I was saying that if you do initiate another Rise of Rome (Paddy, I, Beta, and Rhoth just started one), I would consider playing first Persia and then Greece in that order.

Hrm. I love Roman times, and would love to play persia, greece, carthage, or rome, in that order. (Well, i don't really care much about the order. Whatever.) I'm somewhat of a Persia fan because of the great series "Belisarius" by Eric Flint and David Drake, which features something close to the fall of rome. I'd also love to play "Fall of Rome" if anyone's interested, or ... Middle Ages, with myself as Byzantium or one of the Arab powers (we'd have to have AI in that)...

snoopy369
September 2, 2004, 22:29
So it sounds like you me con and wittlich, Akulla? :) If you start the thread and send ... hmm, me the save, we can get going ^^

It should be you-me-wittlich-con, from the Meso turn order that seems to work well ... or you-me-con-wittlich, since i send other turns to con and he seems to play them quickly. :)

Con btw did you play the meso save? You posted several times but i didn't see a mention of "Save to roth" or whomever you send to ^^

Nah not yet on the saves.

Im having a hell of a time at work, the plan is to catch up on all PBEM's yet this evening.

Make me Persia and build the turn order around that, or make me Persia and you guys be whomever you want to be

Ill do Greece as well if that makes sense from a turn order standpoint.

Ill work on the FM for ya next time Witt ;)

Persia-
Celts--AI recommended
Carthage-

The nation of Phoenicia does now formally protest the evil machinations of the cowardly Hittites. The Hittites have several iron resources within their boundaries, but instead of using them, they are making a play for my iron resource that has been in Phoenician lands for generations. This cannot be swallowed.

I gave the wicked Hittite leader an ultimatum 30 years ago to avoid settling near Phoenician lands, but instead this criminal 'leader' only adds to his crimes by increasing his forces.

Therefore we are at WAR!!!! :doitnow!:

The nation of Phoenicia does now formally request all other nations friendly to us to make war with the vile Hittites. We also must apologize to our brethren of Babylon and Sumeria. Our alliance against the Medeans, thought to include the likes of the Hittites, must now suffer the loss of not one but two of its members as the revolting Hittites must be exterminated from the environs surrounding my land.

To the malicious leader of the Hittites, I not only throw my gauntlet down, I throw it in your face!!!

The Hittites remind the Phoenicians that there were Phoenician troops on our mutual border before there were Hittite troops, and that combined with the apparent Phoenician ploy to conquer the allegedly neutral nation of Egypt has forced the Hittites to reinforce our border.

We have not taken the iron deposit (yet), and heeded the Phoenician request to not settle on that square (yet). However, after this turn of events, make no mistake that the Mighty Hittite Army will not be stopped from protecting what is rightfully ours; and we respectfully remind the Phoenicians which nation is larger.

Should they choose to rethink the mistake they have made, they may feel free to let us know, and the Hittites will take it into due consideration.

The Phoenicians remind the Hittites that WAS NO MUTUAL BORDER. Take a look at the screenshot. You see no Hittite cities anywhere close to my land. My troops were merely protecting the iron hill IN MY OWN LAND. The Hittite troop build up...along with a settler...on the tile directly next to my iron instead of on the road north of it was a direct threat to my iron and everyone knows it.

The Hittites have no moral high ground here, any more than the Medeans have for ambushing the Sumerians, or my own forces for annihilating the Egyptians. :D

the Mighty Hittite Army will not be stopped from protecting what is rightfully ours; and we respectfully remind the Phoenicians which nation is larger.

Mighty Hittite Army?

May I remind the Hittites which country has the mighty army comprised of multiple companion infantry, and which country does not even possess iron.

Should they choose to rethink the mistake they have made, they may feel free to let us know, and the Hittites will take it into due consideration.

Don't worry...it's on!

No, my alliance with Sumeria and Babylon was sound. I was even in the process of sending units to the Medean front per our alliance parameters.

I declared war as his buildup of units and a settler on my border with the sole intention of stealing my iron deposits was a clear threat to Phoenician National Security.

Let me ask this? If I showed up on your doorstep with 20+ companion infantry, wouldn't you take it as a sign of aggression? ;) Egypt can you comment? :cute:

No I don't consider our three way alliance activated enough for you or Beta to send troops against snoopy as I'm nominally the aggressor (though in truth, snoopy started this war with his build-up of troops on my border). Though I do call on the defensive portion of our agreement in that you do not ally with snoopy or Paddy against me. :)

The Hittites remind the Phoenicians that there were indeed some few Phoenician troops north of that border, within about 3 or 4 squares of a Hittite city. The combination of that fact and the sneak attack against the Egyptians made the Hittite nation mighty wary.

The mighty Hittite army indeed. Although we do not at the moment possess iron, that is not due to a lack of resources (as any Phoenician spy worth his weight in worthless phoenician lead ought to be able to tell his masters) but due to ... strategy.

Perhaps the Phoenicians should study with the masters that the Hittites have studied with. Krillus Septimus, for example. His tournament play has been called outstanding, and taught this humble student a thing or two about resource management during a fill-in round.

Not to mention the Vox, whose strategy at times in a certain Demo game has been considered to contain some of the best play-from-behind tactics ever invented.

The Phoenicians must remind the Hittites that he had mentioned to the Hittite leader that those units were originally earmarked for the defensive alliance against Medea...intended to help the Hittites even...and were travelling that way before being pulled back to defend against the treachery of the Hittites.

The leader of the Phoenicians has studied with the best, such as the great Theseus Podosimus, and indeed has learned the secrets not only of resource management, but the higher, little-known secrets of game management. ;)

The Hittites remind the Phoenicians that they did not initiate this attack, nor did they found a city at that location, so there was no 'treachery' that you speak of. The Hittites simply ... prepared. It was the Phoenician sneak attack against Egypt that ... concerned us, that perhaps defenses needed to be placed between us and our volatile neighbor to the south.

Ahhh. The great Theseus Podosimus is know to us, and is a fellow bandito (http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=122066&goto=newpost) during which we hope to learn much. However, the strategies of Krillus and Vox are clearly superior to that of Theseus Podosimus in this situation, as the combination of monetary values and scientific and strategic developments clearly point to these strategies.

The Hittites simply ... prepared. It was the Phoenician sneak attack against Egypt that ... concerned us, that perhaps defenses needed to be placed between us and our volatile neighbor to the south.

Well I won't argue with that. :)

However, the strategies of Krillus and Vox are clearly superior to that of Theseus Podosimus in this situation, as the combination of monetary values and scientific and strategic developments clearly point to these strategies.

We shall see how it all plays out and who is left standing as the winner when the game ends. ;)

Yup. :)

Sent. Combat report will be left out, because it was that depressing for me.

I gave up after 2 vet horsemen from the north died w/o a single hitpoint lost from a companion infantry. Blah.

Meow back to Maggie. :)

But one of them almost got dis-owned last night. We were at the vets for the annual check up and shots. Usually goes OK, and we are in the room when the vet is doing the check-up. Simon went first - no problem. Oliver is usually a bit stubborn and problemetic, but last night he freaked completely. Eleanor got scratched pretty badly on her had, and I got bitten twice - pretty deeply, on my hand.

There was blood everywhere, Olly was very stressed, and the vet was appealing for calm from all. We let Olly get under a chair, calmed him down, into the carrier, and the hospital handlers finished the check-up.

Many band-aids and much wine later - Olly's parents have recovered.

:) Well, maybe not quite. Need more wine. Nice 2000 Rubesco un-corked for tonight. :b:

Con, you might want to PM Paddy to let him know that his save is attached. I just stummbled across the save you left for me in the XXE/Rise of Rome PBEM....so with attachments, a PM would be nice. ;)

Ill try BUT the main reason Im just attaching right now is a lack of internet time.

So I would ask that if someone does not see it make sure they get a reminder because I may not be able to do it.

1950bc to Beta. :)

Snoop, ye may take me ah-urn from me, but you'll never take me freedom!

;)

Oh...and you'll never use the iron you took from me either.

snoopy369
October 5, 2004, 21:38
Use the iron? Use it? Bah, you think the Hittites care about your puny Iron? The Hittites are the masters of Iron, in fact the Original Iron Chef hails from the Hittite lands. We have more iron than you could ever DREAM of having.

:D

Rhothaerill
October 5, 2004, 21:45
Well yeah...they do. Now they'll actually have to work to hook up one of the ones in their own land instead of cowardly stealing one of the Phoenician iron resources.

I don't even WANT to know what raw iron tastes like by the way. So you can keep your iron chef in your own land. :cute:

The Hittites have preferred up to this point to handicap themselves by only building weaker units. The unfortunate matter with the large bronze statue and whatnot have forced us to rethink our position, and consider developing our own iron mines, of which we have several. We are not lacking in the resource, only in the desire to abuse that which the Gods have so graciously given unto us.
