Galactic Overlord
A New Forum Game from
Jamski Productions
Overview
Galactic Overlord is a game of space strategy and warfare for any number of players. It is turn based and builds on the success of the well known Paper-Stone-Scissorstm system. Each player is the ruler of a faction determined to bring the whole galaxy under their domination using every means at their disposal until they are the sole survivor and the almighty Galactic Overlord!
Setting up the Game
Each player starts the game with three Bases. A Base is a planet, hollowed out asteroid, huge space station or any other large structure capable of supporting life and industry. For the sake of the game it is not important exactly what the Base is. The players should name their Bases for the sake of identification.
Each player also starts the game with 20 Build Points, or BPs. As long as the player has at least one base still in operation he recieves an additional 5 BPs each turn per home base, and 2 BPs each turn per captured base. The player's initial BPs can be used before the game starts to build the starting Ships or more Bases according to the following table:
Frigate......1 BP
Cruiser......2 BPs
Battleship...3 BPs
Dreadnaught..4 BPs
Titan........5 BPs
Base.........16 BPs
The more expensive the Ship, the more Bases are required to build one:
Frigate......1 Base
Cruiser......2 Bases
Battleship...3 Bases
Dreadnaught..4 Bases
Titan........5 Bases
Each Ship built can be armed as you wish with Lasers, Fighters or Torpedoes with each weapon taking up one unit of space from the Ship's total. A ship may only carry one kind of weapon.
Frigate......1 unit of space/1 hit point
Cruiser......2 units of space/2 hit points
Battleship...3 units of space/3 hit points
Dreadnaught..4 units of space/4 hit points
Titan........5 units of space/5 hit points
EXAMPLE : A Battleship might have 3xLasers (Laserbattleship), a Cruiser 2xTorpedoes(Torpedocruiser) and a Frigate 1xFighters (Carrierfrigate).
BP's may be stockpiled for use later during the game.
***NOTE - a cap of 6 self-built bases has been imposed. Only self-built bases count towards maximum hull sizes***
Playing the Game - Orders
This part of the game is similar to Nuclear Wartm. Each player sends his orders to the GM who processes them all together once they are recieved.
Normal Orders (you may make both these orders in conjuction with the orders in the next section)
Build Ships/Bases : You may spend your BPs or stockpile them for later. Ships built that turn may be used for attack and defence, Bases built may be destroyed that turn. Damaged Ships may be fully repaired for a cost of 1 BP (Now you see why big ships are good)
***NOTE - You need to already have bases built for them to count for hull size allowance.***
Use Spy : If you have a Spy you may stop one of your opponents orders that turn being exectuted. The Spy is lost. Spy affects Attack!, Rebuild Generator and Train Spy.
Special Orders (you must choose only one of these per turn)
Attack! : This starts a fight between your fleet and that of an opponent. You must choose which ships to send, and which to leave at home in case you yourself are attacked that turn. See Combat for more.
Raise Shields! : This protects your Bases and Ships from all attacks that turn, and also stops any spies. Any opposing fleet that attacks you will take six Hits (distributed as per combat damage) while you remain snug and secure. The generator is exhausted by this use and must be rebuilt.
Rebuild Generator : Rebuilds the shield generator.
Train Spy : Trains and inserts a new Spy for your cause.
Playing the Game - Combat
Combat is a simple, and yet complex, Paper-Stone-Scissorstm system :
Lasers - beat - Fighters
Fighters - beat - Torpedoes
Torpedoes - beat - Lasers
Every player must also specify an "Order of Battle" every turn, whether attacking, or expecting to be attacked. Failure to do so results in the loss of your whole fleet in confusion and panic. This is simple to do though. The players must specify what order they want to use their weapons.
EXAMPLE : Lasers-Fighters-Torpedoes (Las-Fig-Torp)
This is then compared by the GM to the Order of Battle from the opponent. Let us take two fleets of ships for an example.
Player 1:
1xLaserfrigate 2xCarrierbattleship 1xTorpedocruiser
Order of Battle :
Lasers 1
Fighters 6
Torps 2
Player 2:
2xCarrierfrigate 1xLaserbattleship 2xTorpedocruiser
Order of Battle :
Torps 4
Fighters 2
Lasers 3
We start by comparing the first row:
1 Laser vs 4 Torps.
Torps beat Lasers, so Player 2 scores 4 hits (for the 4 torpedoes)
Then the second row:
6 Fighters vs 2 Fighters.
Fighters = Fighters, so we look at the quantities. 6 beats 2, so Player 1 scores 4 hits (for 6 Fighters - 2 Fighters) The fight is tied.
Finally the third row:
2 Torps vs 3 Lasers.
Torps beat Lasers again, so Player 1 scores 2 hits (for 2 Torps)
Player 1 has taken 4 hits, and must lose some ships. Smallest ships are killed first, in the order indicated by the Order of Battle. He loses the Laserfrigate(1 hit), the Torpedocruiser(2 hits) and one Battleship is damaged and must be repaired before it can fight again. One Carrierbattleship is left in action.
Player 2 has it rather worse. With 6 hits taken he loses both CarrierFrigates(1 hit each) and both Torpedocruisers(2 hits each). At least his Laserbattleship is undamaged.
Player 2 has lost the battle with 6 hits to 4 and must retreat. Player 1 captures one base from Player 2. (exception - the last base of any player will be defended to the death) Had Player 2's fleet been completely destroyed, Player 1 would have captured all of Player 2's bases, as they would now be undefended.
***NOTE - some rules on capturing bases were changed in this edition***
Combat Summary
Add total Fighters/Lasers/Torps in each fleet.
Sort fleets according to their empire's Order of Battle. Fleets with no OoB are destroyed.
Lasers > beat > Fighters > beat > Torpedoes > beat > Lasers - Apply Hits equal to the amount of lasers/torps/fighters.
In the case of like-vs-like (i.e. Fighters vs Fighters) the higher total wins. Apply Hits equal to the difference between the totals.
The fleet that takes the most Hits is the loser.
Remove destroyed ships, smallest first, in the same order as the OoB.
If the attacker won, he captures one base.
If the attacker destroyed the entire enemy fleet, he captures all his opponents bases.
Example Orders
Build 1x Carrier-Cruiser (2) Repair Laser-Battleship(1) Stockpile (2)
Spy on Player X
Attack Player X with 2x Laser-Frigate, 2x Carrier-Frigate, 1x Torpedo-Battleship
Defensive fleet : 1 x Carrier-Cruiser 1x Laser-Battleship (repaired this turn)
Damaged ships : None
Order of Battle : Lasers-Fighters-Torpedoes
***NOTE - Don't forget to establish an Order of Battle***
Alliances
You may want to orgainise joint attacks on an opponent with an ally. In this case you must agree on an Order of Battle between the allies. If two differenet opponents attack at the same time without informing the GM of their alliance, then the defender must fight them consecutively, fighting first against the one who posted their orders last.
It is possible that when a player is attacked by two non-allied fleets at the same time that he loses both battles. In this case both attackers gain a base. Allied fleets that attack together must decide who is to get the captured base.
The GM applies hits to allied fleets in the same way as to a normal fleet. This means that if one ally has smaller ships than his partner, he will take the bulk of the casulties. War is hell.
The GM
The GM will report each turn on the activities of each player. He will keep their orders secret and their current navies secret also, but will reveal their bases, the size of their navy and their current BPs.
Winning the Game
You win the game by destroying all the bases and fleets of your opponents to become the Galactic Overlordtm!!!
Galactic Overlord v1.1
New hardcore combat rules for Galactic Overlord
The Aim:
The aim of the v1.1 revision is to improve the distribution of results and move away from the "winner takes all" paradigm where in one case from 6 the victor would totaly destroy the enemy fleet while remaining unharmed - even with inferior ships.
The Changes:
Tougher Ships
All ships now have twice the Hitpoints of before :
Frigate 2
Cruiser 4
Battleship 6
Deadnought 8
Titan 10
Longer Combats
Each weapon system can now be fired twice in a combat, rather than once. This is in keeping with the doubled hitpoints. The OoB should now contain six entries.
Examples :
Fighters->Lasers->Torps->Lasers->Fighters->Torps
Fighters->Fighters->Lasers->Torps->Lasers->Torps
Or in short : TTFLFL etc...
Adjusted Weapon Comparisons:
Instead of the old model, where 1 laser would beat any number or fighters, and cause 1 Hit, and 1 Fighter would beat any number of Torpedoes etc, in v1.1 weapons simply double in effectiveness against the "favoured weapon"
Lasers are x2 vs Fighters
Fighters are x2 vs Torpedoes
Torpedoes are x2 vs Lasers
Adjusted Damage:
The scores are compared after any multiplications (see above) and the one with the higher score inflicts Hits equal to the difference between the scores on the other.
Tactics 1 - Range:
You may instruct your captains to try to engage at different ranges.
Close In - Lasers from both fleets count an extra x2. If both fleets Close In then this stacks to a x4. This negates Back Off.
Back Off - Lasers from both fleets count an extra x0.5 penalty. This is negated by Close In. If both players Back Off this stacks to x0.25.
Default is no special orders.
Tactics 2 - Formation:
You may instruct your captains to engage using different formations.
Bunch Together - Your ships huddle together to protect each other from Fighters, but are more vunerable to the large explosions of Torpedoes. Attacks with Fighters against Bunched Together fleets are at x0.5, while Torpedoes get x2.
Spread Out - Your ships spread out, making the fleet hard to target with Torpedoes, while leaving individual ships vunerable to Fighters. Attacks with Fighters against Spread Out fleets are at x2, while Torpedoes get x0.5
Default is no special orders.
Example OoB Under v1.1
Fighters->Lasers->Lasers->Torpedoes->Fighters->Torpedoes
Bunch Together and Back Off.
This means a bit more work for me, but it should be worth it.
Have fun with v1.1 combat :)

Round Zero standings. Ljcvetko has 35 BPs as he didn't spend any of the starting 20. Everyone else has whatever they stockpiled + whatever they got from their bases.
Starmap : Ljcvetko's bases are unnamed. He can name them later. All bases are in the colour of your team. Spaced has a 4th base that is not yet shown on the map, called something unpronouncable.

Welcome to Sector Apolyton, commanders. This part of the galaxy is ripe for the taking, filled with bases and resources. You have sole command of your small fleets and you must plan carefully to survive, to gather more bases to your Empire, to crush your rivals' fleets and to finally be crowned the Galactic Overlord. Good luck, and have fun.
Now accepting orders for Round 1.
Those should include builds, attacks/spies/etc and Order of Battle.

* The comms screen crackles into life, and the image of a man looking suspiciously like twentieth century jazz legend Duke Ellington appears in a sharply-tailored suit, seated before a map of the galaxy with what looks to be a giant duck's footprint across it.
This is a message from the Imperium Fuliguline. Our Council has declared that we shall be embarking on a mission to unite the galaxy under our benevolent rule. Let those who might wish to stand against the might
of the Empire be ready, for we shall treat those who stand in our way with no mercy. If you do not engage our fearsome squadrons of Mighty Ducks then you will be treated fairly, but any resistance will be stamped upon like so much unnecessary pondlife! If you are not for us then you are to be considered against us and are henceforth deemed unworthy of merciful treatment. The Empire is spreading its wings. Woe betide those who might fly afowl of her!
Er..... Sent!

Well it is the first game, so someone has to do something impossibly dumb, and I'm not bothered if that person ends up being me, but if you'd like to PM the fatal flaw then I'd be grateful. :)

A question Jam. What is the build order?
For example, suppose a player wants to build bases and ships in the same round. Are his bases built before his ships or is it the other way around?

Does it matter? You don't get points from the bases untill the next turn anyways.

The original proposal was to just list they types and number of ships they had: eg
3 Fri, 4 Cru, 1 Bat
rather than
2 T-Fri, 1 F-Fri, 4 L-Cru, 1 F-Bat
Still, you are the only one who can make a judgement on the work involved vs the gameplay payoff.

Not knowing the fleets would add some more strategy though. If you don't know if playerX has 1 or 100 ships it would be more interesting when you attack and would make you plan an attack more than just looking for the player with the least ammount of ships and picking them off.
Skanky Burns
May 27, 2004, 03:33
But then, number of ships doesn't really tell much either. Are 12 Fri really that much better than 3 Bat? Without knowing the sizes, the information on fleet sterength isn't going to help a great deal.
In other words, we may be able to cut the report on fleet strength altogether.

My thoughts exactly. No need to know what the other players have as far as firepower goes. Jam did say at round five there would be a "coucil" to ammend the rules too.

Round 1
Battles :
1st Battle of Shang - :)Smiley attacks Urban Ranger.
:)Smiley (OoB Fighter-Laser-Torpedo)
3x Laserbattleship
3x Fighterbattleship
2x Torpedobattleship
UR (OoB Torpedo-Fighter-Laser)
2x Fighterdreadnought
3x Torpedodreadnought
Urban's factories raced to produce ships as their enemies approached, finally churning out 5 new Dreadnought class ships to stand against the invading force of Smiley. As soon as the enemy was sighted, Urban's ships launched a vast wave of torpedoes, that raced across the kilometers separating the fleets. Smiley's Battleships scrambled their numerous fighters to defend aginst this menace, which they did easily, outmanovering and shooting down the torps, not one of which struck home, before racing over to attack Urban's fleet.
Urban's ships were getting hit hard by the fighters boiling over them
and responded by launching their own, sparking a massive dogfight. Unnoticed Smiley's ships reached laser range and opened on the clouds of fighters, friend or foe. In seconds all were destroyed, and the lasers spent the rest of their power on the Dreadnoughts of Urban's fleet.
There was a moment's pause. Urban's fleet was practically destroyed by this point, but Smiley's captains wanted to make sure, sending their own torpedoes racing towards Urban's ships. The expected laser response never materialised. Perhaps the fleet lacked laser weapons, but we shall never know as the entire navy was obliterated.
Urban is elimintated, and Smily gains the bases of Qin, Sha, Chou, and Chang
Smiley Urban
9 Fig 12 Torp - Urban takes 9 Hits
9 Las 8 Fig - Urban takes 9 Hits
6 Torp 0 Las - Urban takes 6 Hits
1st Battle of Qin - Ludd attacks Urban Ranger
This time waiting to attack a weakened enemy was the wrong move, as Ludd's fleet could only watch Smiley occupy Urban's bases.
Shame.
1st Battle of Base3 - Duke attacks DrSpike
Duke (Fighters-Lasers-Torpedoes)
1x Fighterdreadnought
1x Torpedobattleship
1x Laserbattleship
1x Torpedofrigate
1x Laserfrigate
DrSpike (Torpedoes-Lasers-Fighters)
1x Torpedodreadnought
1x Laserdreadnought
1x Fighterdreadnought
Doc was expecting trouble and built a small but balanced fleet of his largest class of ships. The battle against Duke's attacking forces was almost a textbook draw. First Doc tried his luck with torpedoes, but Duke's fighters swarmed him and he hardly managed to launch any, and was attacked hard by the fighters, one of his dreadnoughts being destroyed by a kamikazi attack on the reactor. A brief exchange of laser fire brought neither side closer to victory, so Duke sent in his torpedoes, to be met by Doc's fighters in turn, who returned the favour by destroying both his frigates and badly damaging a laser-armed battleship. Duke threw a few bombs in the direction of Base3 and warped back home to lick his wounds.
Duke Doc
4 Fig 4 Torp - Doc takes 4 Hits
4 Las 4 Las - No hits
4 Torp 4 Fig - Duke takes 4 Hits.
DrSpike loses 1x Torpedodreadnought, and Base3 is damaged(no BPs next turn)
Duke loses 1x Torpedofrigate, 1x Laserfrigate and a Laserbattleship is damaged(2)

That's not right. If a player is missing one type, the top of the battle order should come up again. In this case, it would be 6 Torp vs 12 Torp, thus Smiley would take 6 points of damage.

You've fired your torpedoes, you've launched your fighters... and what's left... the lasers... oh, we don't have any lasers.... aaaagh!
Otherwise everyone would build 1-type navies and take that 1-in-3 chance of being blocked for doing massive damage.
I knew you'd complain about the rules if you died ;):cute:
You were a bit unlucky there though. You were outnumbered, so I expected you to lose a ship or two, but beaten in every round was pretty tough. Smiley played a perfect momentum opening though, building no bases to get more ships early on, which has paid off as he now has your bases. Heh, even if you had beaten him off or survived at least, Ludd's fleet had already arrived and was waiting on the result to come and attack you...

Not really. If I got 90 ships with torps and the other side got 30 ships each, I am not going to send all 90 of my ships in the first wave. That only makes sense. Likewise, if the enemy sends in 4 frigates, there's no need for me to send in 5 titans.

The problem is a rotation in the order of battle produces exactly the same results, so a complete destruction of fleets seems to be quite a frequent occurance.

No. Bases are built at the same time as ships, so you need to start the turn with 5 bases to build Titans.

Despite my inability to remember my own fleet, I definitely remember building an extra base last turn (Smew), and then using these four to build a dreadnought, which Spikey got in the knackers. round 2 orders are in!
DrSpike
May 27, 2004, 09:08
I favour playing on, since restarting now will inevitably just lead to other things coming up.
As for turn order Duke's attack is fine, since he built the base on turn 1, then ships + attack on me turn 2. I defended with ships built in turn 2, so it's fine. I also think it should be the case that bases/ships are built together, so that you must already have 5 bases to build the bigass ship.
As to GL's point I too think he should probably attack Smiley after Smiley took UR's bases. However it raises some questions, since a player could mop up after a fight and get all the spoils.
I am also wary of rules that depend on who sent their order first. These are never fair.
Perhaps the solution to both the final two problems is to randomise the order of attacks when 3 players are involved.

Crap, Duke is right. Ok, you can't build a 5th base and titans in the same turn, or a 4th base and dreadnoughts, but its done now. I shall keep a close eye on this in the future. If Doc thinks this is unfair, we can remove the damage on Base3.
Speaking of things gone wrong.... I think my fleet should of continued it's planned attack and tried to take the base from smiley, after he conquered it.
You sent orders to attack Urban *shrugs* And your captains were happy to let Smiley's ships do the fighting and sit back and watch, before falling falling on the survivors. Sadly there were no survivors, and your captains didn't have the urge to start a war without written orders...

Like I said, Ludd ordered his ships to attack Urban, not to attack a specific base regardless of who occupied it. As for the "post first - fight last" rule, its a simple solution to the problem. Sometimes going first is better - as in this case, but sometimes going second is better, as would be the case had Urban won the fight taking heavy damage, for instance. There's no way to tell in advance whic will be the best result, meaning "post first - fight last" is just as "random" as rolling a dice.

Duke built a Dread he couldn't be abuildin', and got a draw with Doc, damageing Doc's base. I've removed the damage from Doc's base, but let Duke keep the Dread, as it was an honest misunderstanding.

Doc, its just like Nuclear War, but with a building phase first. After you're done building you send an order. Train spy, raise shields, build shield generator or attack someone.

Spies seem rather lame though. All they stop is an attack order or building spies/generators. Now if they stopped new shipping being created...

Spies ARE rather lame. Unless they stop someone attacking YOU. If they could stop ship construction they would be über.
Can you resend please Ludd. 'Poly is being odd.

If spies stop people from attack you, they are essentially shields, but not as good.
How about having spies reveal the composition of an enemy fleet? Or, make them a BP-buildable unit.

Well... let's leave the discussion on spies untill the 5th round "Council"

They stop someone attacking someone else. The chance that someone attacks you on the turn you send a spy to them is minimal. The chance that that person is the only one attacking you that turn has an even lower chance.
Can I convert my spy into a shield generator?

...in the 31st century, breakthroughs in bioengineering have led to the Skank Empire's creation of the galaxy's first organic shield generator...
How many spies/shield generators can I have stockpiled?
If many, can I use several spies in a single turn?
Jamski
May 27, 2004, 12:40
Yes. That's the advantage of spies. You can stockpile them in peacetime. The other advantage is that they stop an opponent rebuilding his shield or training his own spies...
-Jam
So, only one shield then? No shield generators stockpile?

I'm not sure what you mean, but yes, fleet destruction is not so unlikely. A different OoB would have helped you...
What I meant was this. Consider laser-fighter-torpedo. If you rotate that once, you get torpedo-laser-fighter. The second sequence completely destroys the first one. It's likely that these sorts of sequences occur a lot, thus causing destruction of entire fleets, which should not occur that often, when both fleets are roughly the same size.
As for my other point (you seem to be avoiding it Jamski :nono: ), consider a very simple example. Pit two lineups of 3 ships fo the same size, say, battleships, at each other. One side has one of each, while the other side has 3 of the same. If you use my suggestion to resolve the combat, no matter how the OoBs are, you always end up with 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 lose for both sides, which makes perfect sense. If we use the original interpretation, the side with 3 of the same will automatically lose 2 ships, 3 if he's unlucky, which is very silly.

Nice point... it illustrates the tactical blunder you made. A fleet all of one type is very vunerable.

Its like Gladiator - a combination of luck, second guessing and psycology, within a strategic framework. The way to win combats is to build your fleet to weigh luck your way a bit...
However, I think next round I will make the fleet lists public. That makes it more strategic - plan your attack by looking at what you're likely to face.

That could work, Doc... but there will be no rules changes in the middle of a round 6 players from 9 have aready sent their orders for. (Athough I still don't have Ludd's)
Proposed costs :
Shield Generator - 1 x number bases currently owned.
Spy - 3
-Jam
And fleet maintenance will also have to be introduced. Though I'd reserve these profound changes for the next game.
And please Jam, don't ignore my questions. Can I stockpile shield generators?
And another question. What if my defensive fleet was obliterated, but I sent some ships attacking and they were victorious. Do I still lose all of my bases or just one?

It would have to have additional restrictions. Otherwise you would be invulnerable and have 4 x base worth of production each turn.
I have to hand it to you though, this game is really good. Ironing out the rules will of course be problematic but overall I have to give this a significant :b:

Perhaps you have hit upon a solution.
Total build points of attacker's fleet versus TBP of defenders fleet split into three categories.
ADP
Or....
We could incorporate a ship design system that has unchangeable ADPH attack-defense-power-hits picks that are made when the ship is built out of a pool for that ship class. For instance you could make a 1-1-1-1 frigate cuz the frigate gives you 4 point to distribute, or a 1-0-2-1, then say 9 points for the crusier, 15 for the battleship, 22 for the dreadnought and 30 for the titan. They would still cost the same amount of BPs and we could take HP out of the equation and make then static.
or....
We could build our ships with long range and short range options. Here there is no power rating and the same number is used for both offensive and defensive options. Hence we could have 1-4 LR-SR titans (with 5 hp). Long range combat is executed first, damage taken, then short range combat. The key is that .... hmmm this idea does not seem to be working at the moment without getting more complicated. I was trying to figure out a way to make SR combat more effective like doubling the attack factors....but that seems too much of an advantage. Maybe a 50% bonus...but then the GM has to do a lot of maths.
Okay my head hurts now...see what you did! :p

Sorry, I missed one. I thought I answered them all.
No, you can't stockpile shield generators.
You would lose all your original and previously captured bases, I guess, but keep the one(s) you just captured. Of course you wouldn't even be able to build a Frigate then untill you built some new bases. Your hull size limit would be zero. You would basicially be screwed, but not dead.

It would probably be better if weapons were weighted. For example, fighters were worth 3 torps, torps were worth 3 lasers, etc. (Note, I didn't check these to make sure the scissors paper rock system held). Quality should count, but 1 laser defeating 500 torpedos? I don't think so.
:) Smiley
May 27, 2004, 13:51
Let's try not to make this too complex. It is after all text based.
Right now there are 6 possible OoBs. For any given battle, there is the following chances:
1/3: Total destruction of one fleet or the other (ie Smiley vs UR)
1/6: Stalemate
1/2: Moderate damage to both sides (ie Doc vs Duke)
The best solution is to introduce a fourth weapon. We'll call the weapons, A,B,C,and D for simplicity. A stalemates with A, A beats B, A stalemates with C, A gets pwned by D. Then there will be 24 possible OoBs, with the following outcomes:
1/12: Total destruction of one fleet or the other.
(ABCD vs BCDA, DABC)
1/24: Stalemate
(ABCD vs ABCD)
Rest: Damage of varying sizes inflicted.
----------------------------------------
We should also consider effects on game length though. Keeping casualties low could lead to very long games.
Jamski
May 27, 2004, 13:55
Skanky has hit gold :)
Instead of automatically beating, the value could be multiplied!
Lasers are x3 vs Fighters
Fighters are x3 vs Torpedoes
Torpedoes are x3 vs Lasers
Its the same game, but with less damage dealt, and less chance of crazy results.

Round 2
Battle of Deepspace 12: Ludd attacks Ljcvetko!
Ludd: (Laser-Fighter-Torpedo)
3 fighter battleships
2 torpedo battleships
1 laser battleship.
Ljcvetko : (Lasers-Torpedoes-Fighters)
1 carrier dreadnought
1 torpedo dreadnought
1 laser dreadnought
2 carrier battleships
2 torpedo battleships
2 laser battleships
Ludd took a chance attacking Ljcvetko's bases, and his chance failed to pay off. Out gunned in every catagory, he still seemed to be winning the battle after the opening exchanges until Ljcvetko's fighters carried the day for him, leaving only one damaged ship to limp home...
Ludd Ljcvetko
3 las 10 las - Ludd takes 7 Hits
9 fig 10 torp - Ljcvetko takes 9 Hits
6 torp 10 fig - Ludd takes 10 Hits
Results:
Ludd takes 17 Hits destroying all his ships except 1 Torpedobattleship which limped away home damaged.
Ljcvetko takes 9 hits, destroying both Laserbattleships and one Torpedobattleship. He saves his base Deepspace12 from attack.
Battle of Enoch - :) Smiley attacks Ludd
Smiley: (Fighters-Lasers-Torpedoes)
4x Fighterbattleship
4x Laserbattleship
4x Torpedobattleship
Ludd: (Laser-Fighter-Torpedo)
1 Fighterbattleship
1 Torpedofrigate
1 Laserfrigate
...the ship limped home to Enoch, where it was blown up in dock as Smiley's rampaging fleet arrived in the system. The few defenders died bravely, shooting down the first wave of fighters but only managed to scratch one of Smiley's Battleships in return. Smiley's lasers were not so forgiving, and his torpedoes were overkill.
Smiley Ludd
12 fig 1 las - Smiley takes 1 Hit
12 las 3 fig - Ludd takes 12 Hits
12 torp 1 torp - Ludd takes 11 Hits
Results:
Smiley takes damage to one of his Fighterbattleships.
Ludd's tiny defensive fleet is totally smashed, and Smiley takes control of his bases.
General Ludd is eliminated.
Everyone else was building away like beavers. Skanky reached the base limit with "Tequila" and Duke built a base but neglected to name it. The crew dubbed it "X" and the name stuck. He then tried to repeat his trick of building a ship a size larger than allowed, but his engineers failed and only made a Dreadnought. The extra materials were refunded to his stockpile.
Full report coming WITH SHIP LIST!

How did Spaced get titans, considering he started the turn with 4 bases?

He started with 5.
He built no bases this turn. Compare the maps.

I thought there was a limit to 5 built bases?
Skanky Burns
May 27, 2004, 16:20
Sorry, my mistake. I must have missed his basecount when I checked it a few hours earlier. Base limit is 6.
Jamski
May 27, 2004, 16:20
Six. Says so in the rules, I said so in the discussion, I even just mentioned Skanky hitting the base limit. (Although I forgot to mention that Vlad did the same)
Edit: crosspost

I support Skanky's idea but for the next game, of course.
I'll be sending my orders in the next few minutes.
By the way, my recent name change shouldn't confuse many of you. You can still address me by my former name, if you wish. The name change is for the sake of clarity only. Civ 2 people know me as Ljube, while you here know me as ljcvetko, so I wanted to preserve that.
DrSpike
May 27, 2004, 18:20
That name change is awful. Change it back :doitnow!:
:)
Jamski
May 27, 2004, 18:32
Or at least give us instructions how to pronounce it :doitnow!:
-Jam
With pleasure :)
The second part of my name (my former name) isn't meant to be pronounced at all. It's just an abbreviation of my full name Ljubisa Cvetkovic.
The first part of my name is my real life nick and is pronounced similarly to the way you would pronounce Lube.
Jamski, I was naming my ships for the sake of the story only to find out I lost a torpedo battleship and two laser battleships.
Jamski
May 27, 2004, 19:17
Yeah, you named the ships, but didn't tell me which ship was which name... *shrugs*

May 28, 2004, 06:54
Orders sent.
(We probably should do something in the next game to make the builder strategy more viable-- or at least to make the "early rush" strategy Smiley's using not total cheese. One possibility: Non-captured bases provide +1 to each of laser, fighter, and torpedo when defending.)
Jamski, a question. What if I send an attacking fleet, but someone sabotages my attack? Does my fleet count as defensive then or not?
Jamski
May 28, 2004, 07:59
Yes, it counts as defensive, LJ.
I have orders from those that claim to have sent them... but DrSpike's need a bit more info ;)
You didn't read the mafia write-up did you Jam?
I was too annoyed at my death to read it all. Biatches. On stzicks.
Vlad - I was thinking it was quite balanced. Smilie's captured bases make him as strong as those who now have 6 built bases - however he has made himself target number 1. Defeat Smiley to capture TWELVE bases!!!
And Skanky, I shall restore your phantom Torpedobattleship  I must have dropped it on the floor .... *is ashamed*

It was a busy morning in Star Fleet Command as long range predictor-corrector sub space scanners started picking up something that could only represent an attacking fleet.
Red alert was ordered.
“We have been preparing for something like this from the moment we entered Star Fleet Academy, but we have always hoped this would never happen” lamented Admiral Ross as he addressed the commanders of the finest starships in the entire Star Fleet, captain Benjamin Sisko, commander of Deep Space 9 space station and at the same time in command of the most lethal torpedo battleship in the galaxy, the Defiant, captain Jean Luc Picard, commander of the carrier battleship Enterprise, the pride of Star Fleet and captain Spock, commander of the other carrier battleship in the fleet, battleship Die Donau.
“Long range scanners have confirmed our fears. It’s the attack of the Dominion led by their mindless minion General Ludd. They have amassed numerous ships, but the combined force of all our starships in the sector should be enough to repulse their unprovoked attack”, continued Admiral Ross.
“Due to the extreme importance of the forthcoming battle, the fleet will be commanded by Admiral James T. Kirk who will also assume the command of our fleet’s flagship the laser dreadnaught Amazon. Good luck to you all. The future of Star Fleet and our cause depends on your success today.”
Admiral Kirk’s fleet was approaching the estimated place of engagement, the space station Deep Space 12 at warp 8, the highest speed available to all ships. He knew the Dominion had committed almost all of their resources to the destruction of the Federation and her Star Fleet, so he had to risk even damage to Deep Space 12, possibly even its destruction, in order to avoid splitting his main force. When Kirk’s fleet dropped out of warp, their short range scanners determined that General Ludd’s fleet was indeed numerous and that it has already engaged thin defences of Deep Space 12 whose hull was already breached in several places and whose shields were failing. In order to drag attention from the endangered space station, Admiral Kirk formed a laser task force and rushed towards Ludd’s fleet taking by surprise one of his battleships and destroying it completely in a coordinated flash of laser beams from laser dreadnaught Amazon and two laser battleships Volga and Minsk.
This thrust into the heart of the enemy fleet may have saved Deep Space 12 from destruction, but it certainly doomed the battleships Volga and Minsk as they were easy pray for Ludd’s fighters. Kirk’s flagship managed to evade Ludd’s fighters somehow and furious Ludd, who was personally commanding the invading fleet, ordered the fighters to pursue the runaway dreadnaught. This was not the wisest move as behind the nearby moon the bulk of Kirk’s fleet was waiting and they destroyed all of Ludd’s fighters and then directed their own swarms of fighters on Ludd’s fleet. The mayhem that ensued saw all Ludd’s ships destroyed and the only survivor was the ship on which Ludd himself was. Before escaping, this ship struck a lethal blow to the exposed torpedo battleship Rio Grande, which managed to damage Ludd’s ship in turn, but not fatally.
“This was a great victory, but we paid our freedom dearly”, said Admiral Ross. “The entire crews of battleships Rio Grande, Volga and Minsk perished. Fifteen thousand men in total lost their lives on our side. But I have the news that should cheer you up a little bit. Know that the Dominion and their ruthless minion General Ludd will never bother us again. Smiley’s fleet made sure no Dominion base exist any more in this quadrant. General Ludd was captured and interrogated personally by Smiley. The hand of Justice is sometimes slow, but can sometimes work real fast.”
“I’m also proud to announce that Admiral Kirk will be decorated with the Medal of Valour of the first grade in honour of his bravery in battle.”

Hmmm when I was preparing my orders yesterday at 8AM, I checked page 1 to see if I could build base 6. It said 5 at that time and I've noticed that you have editted your post at 10AM, I'm pretty sure that my orders would have differed, but nevertheless, the game continues. Round 3
Smiley's vast fleets stood ready to strike across the galaxy, but multiple spies seemed to have infilterated Smiley's chain of command. Faced with so many conflicting orders, assassinated commanders and missing supplies of ammunition and fuel, the great fleets could only orbit theit home bases and wait for the confusion to be sorted out.
The other Overlords took advantage of the lull in the fighting to expand their fleets and to build more bases. An uneasy truce held across the sector.
Duke again asked his engineers to build Titans, and this time his engineers were able to please him.

Screen is at 1024x768, using Internet Exploder 6.
The new table is better, though I'm still coming up about 15 pixels short. I can see about 1/4 of the numbers in the Torpedo Titan column.
How are the orders coming in for the next round, by the way?

Ah... try using a proper browser that supports HTML ;) *dig dig* ;)
I have orders from you, Doc and Skanky so far.

Works now. I use Mozilla at school, but haven't had the time to download it on dialup at home yet.
Might need readjusting when I conquer a tenth base though. ;)

Round 4
The Battle of Base2 :
Trokair's fleet mobilized and raced across space to attack DrSpike's forces. The time had come for a desisive battle to be fought. DrSpike's six newly built Titans awaited the onslaught, as well as the rest of his fleet that had all been held in reserve against such an occurance.
Trokair : Torps->Lasers->Fighters
3x Laserbattleship, 1 Fighterbattleship, 1 Torpedobattleship, 1 Fighterdreadnought, 1 Torpedodreadnought.
DrSpike : Torps->Lasers->Fighters
2x Laserdreadnought, 2x Fighterdreadnought, 2x Torpedodreadnought, 2x Lasertitan, 3x Fightertitan, 3x Torpedotitan.
Both fleets used the same tactics, DrSpike's forces advancing cautiously, expecting a trick. There was no trick. Overlord Trokair had sent his men to their deaths. Although outnumbered and outgunned, his captains fought bravely, but they were countered at every turn by the immense firepower of DrSpike's ships. No survivors returned home to Jamski's Clone. Not one.
Trokair DrSpike
7 Torps 23 Torps Trokair takes 16 Hits
9 Lasers 18 Lasers Trokair takes 9 Hits
7 Fighters 23 Fighters Trokair takes 16 Hits
Result Trokair takes 41 Hits and loses all his attacking fleet. They fought bravely against overwhelming odds.
The second Battle of Base2:
Spaced Cowboy's enourmous fleet was more cautious. They had hidden behind the moon that orbited the third planet of Base2's system, and watched the massaccre from a distance. It was hard to resist sending rescue pods to save Trokair's marines and officers, but Spaced's Grand Admiral had to keep his location secret... untill it was his turn to strike...
Spaced Cowboy : Torpedoes->Fighters->Lasers
1x Torpedocruiser, 1x Fighterbattleship, 1x Laserbattleship, 1x Torpedodreadnought, 4x Lasertitan, 5x Fightertitan, 5x Torpedotitan.
DrSpike : Torps->Lasers->Fighters
2x Laserdreadnought, 2x Fighterdreadnought, 2x Torpedodreadnought, 2x Lasertitan, 3x Fightertitan, 3x Torpedotitan.
An exchange of Torpedoes resulted in the loss of a couple of DrSpike's ships, which Spaced followed with his huge numbers of fighters, hoping to eliminate DrSpike's fleet, but he retaliated fast with an inpenatrable mesh of laser fire, that engulfed the attacking fighters and lanced beams of pure energy through Spaced's fleet. Spaced had held his own laser fire, not wishing to shoot down his fighters, but seeing that they were all destroyed, and DrSpike was launching his own, he opened up at short range, causing massive damage to DrSpike's huge Titans, and forcing him into a retreat. Base2 was captured.
Spaced DrSpike
31 Torps 23 Torps DrSpike takes 8 Hits
28 Fighters 18 Lasers Spaced Cowboy takes 18 Hits
23 Lasers 23 Fighters DrSpike takes 23 Hits
Results :
DrSpike takes 31 Hits, and loses all 6 of his Dreadnoughts, one Torpedotitan destroyed and another damaged. He also loses Base2.
Spaced Cowboy takes 18 Hits and loses 1 Cruiser, both Battleships, the lone Dreadnought, one Torpedotitan destroyed and one damage. He gains Base2.
The Grand Battle for Sha :
Smiley was expecting to have to defend his newly aqquired bases, but not so soon. A lack of ship building in the last cycle could leave him an exposed target - or at least that was the idea shared by the Allied Fleet of Duke o'York and Skanky Burns as they sent their ships streaking towards the Base of Sha, formally owned by Urban Ranger.
Allied Fleet : Fighters->Torpedoes->Lasers
Skanky - 1 Laserfrigate, 1 Fighterfrigate, 2 Torpedofrigates, 1 Torpedobattleship.
Duke - 3 Lasertitans, 3 Fightertitans, 3 Torpedotitans.
Smiley : Torpedoes->Lasers->Fighters
1 Laserfrigate, 1 Fighterfrigate, 10 Laserbattleships, 10 Fighterbattleships, 10 Torpedobattleships.
Although outgunned and outnumbered, the Allies dealt a crushing blow to Smiley's fleet, by second-guessing his tactics at every step.
Allies Smiley
16 Fighters 30 Torps Smiley takes 16 Hits
20 Torpedoes 31 Lasers Smiley takes 20 Hits
16 Lasers 31 Fighters Smiley takes 16 Hits
Results : Smiley takes 52 Hits, and loses both Frigates, All ten Torpedobattleships, six Laserbattleships, and 1 laserbattleship damaged. He also loses Sha.
The Allies gain the base Sha, but have to decide who gets it.
In other news, people built stuff, trained spies and so on.
Fleet lists coming soon.

Here's the old fleetlists. I hope Duke and Skanky are ok sharing that base for now. That kinda forces them to stay allied untill they decide its fate. I gave them half the base each = 1 BP each.
Wowie-zowie, that was an agressive round. Doc's lucky Skanky stiffed on Duke and only sent a few Frigates along with Duke's Titans...

You mean that Smiley was lucky (not Doc). Well I guess that Doc was lucky in his fight with Trok.

Ohhh.... handbags!
I think I have orders from everyone except Ljcvetko... let me check...
Oh, and that DrSpike too. We might get the round 5 update this evening, eh?
I had an idea to slightly adjust combat to make it less luck-based. Simply double the Hitpoints of every ship, and fight all combats over two rounds. So instead of submitting an OoB of :
Fighters->Lasers->Torpedoes
You would submit an OoB of:
Fighters->Lasers->Fighters / Torpedoes->Torpedoes->Lasers
If one fleet was destroyed after the 1st round of combat, the second wouldn't be needed. This adds a bit more tactics to the mix, and only a little more complexity.
Comments while we wait for Doc and Lj?

Such profound changes can only be applied in the next game. But I do support them, as I support Skanky's combat system.

Same could be said for the 1st attack against you.
Oh and I support Skanky's combat system, but I like 2x instead of 3x. This way there is still some luck involved, but if you come in with a vastly superior force, you will prevail....as one should even with a crappy admiral.
:) Smiley
June 2, 2004, 12:00
2x or 3x may lead to even more devastating defeats for roughly equal fleets though. Ships will be able to destroy enemy shipping in excess of their own tonnage.
Example:
MarkG
1FG/L x1
1FG/F x1
1FG/T x1
DanS
1FG/L x1
1FG/F x1
1DB/T x1
MarkG's OoB: L-F-T
DanS's OoB: T-L-F
Result is that MarkG would deal 6 points of damage to DanS's fleet, utterly wiping it out, while taking only 1 loss.
Is this good or bad though?
Jamski
June 2, 2004, 12:06
There's no reason not to combine both the multiplier option and the double Hitpoints option.
Lasers are x2 vs Fighters
Fighters are x2 vs Torpedoes
Torpedoes are x2 vs Lasers
Compare the scores and deal damage to the loser equal to the difference. Simple. That way 2 Lasers beat 3 Fighters, draw with 4 Fighters and lose to 5 Fighters.
And I'm still waiting on Doc and Ljcvetko, who have both posted in this thread since I last mentioned that fact...

Okay maybe I'm not seeing this right, but if player 1 has
8-L
10-F
5-T
player 2 has
13-F
9-L
10-T
Then the result would be
player 2 takes 3 hits
player 1 takes 8 hits
player 1 takes 5 hits
Is this how it works (with the 2x)?

Jesus we waited about 3 months for Trokair with no complaints from you.........what happened to low stress TM?

Okay maybe I'm not seeing this right, but if player 1 has
8-L
10-F
5-T
player 2 has
13-F
9-L
10-T
Then the result would be
player 2 takes 3 hits
player 1 takes 8 hits
player 1 takes 5 hits
Is this how it works (with the 2x)?
Yes. And then you'd go round again, as the OoB would now be six items long.
Hey, no stress Doc, just the traditional complaing about those that post and don't vote (send orders etc) :p
I'm just itching to see what happens in round 5 :eager:

So you are saying that two OOBs will help balance the combat?
Jamski
June 2, 2004, 12:58
Yes, because it reduces the chance of getting the sharp end of the scissors-paper-stone in every round to a mere 1 in 81. I can live with that.

I agree, but the question of changing it now or waiting until next game should be your call.

I think you mean 1 in 36...
Not that I'm playing, but I'd prefer 3x to 2x - comebacks from players who looked certainly doomed are great fun, and should be easier than 2x would allow.
Orders sent, waiting on Doc.

Round 5
(Diplomacy at Work : part 41)
The Battle of Mallard
DrSpike's agents had done their work well - too well perhaps. He'd caused so much confusion to Duke's fleets that they had still not managed to moblise and head out to rendevous with those of his allies. Thus Doc's attacking captains were pretty surpised to come up against the full force of Duke's fleets in orbit around the battlestation of Mallard.
DrSpike : Lasers->Fighters->Torpedoes
5 Torpedotitans, 3 Lasertitans & 4 Fightertitans
Duke o'York : Fighters->Torpedoes->Lasers
2 Laserfrigates, 2 Fighterfrigates, 2 Torpedofrigates, 1 Laserbattleship, 1 Fighterbattleship, 1 Torpedobattleship, 1 Laserdreadnought, 1 Fighterdreadnought, 1 Torpedodreadnought, 2 Lasertitans, 2 Fightertitans & 2 Torpedotitans.
Doc outmanovoured his confused opponents easily, destroying the whole of Duke's armarda without taking a single hit.
DrSpike Duke
15 Lasers 19 Fighters Duke takes 15 Hits
20 Fighters 19 Torpedoes Duke takes 20 Hits
25 Torpedoes 19 Lasers Duke takes 25 Hits
Duke loses all his ships, and DrSpike takes control of his bases. Skanky gets the half-base he was sharing with Duke. Duke o'York is eliminated.
The Battle of
Ljcvetko sensed that Smiley was weakened by his recent losses and offered an alliance, his ships to meet with Smiley's at the Overlord's bases, to follow a plan of attack devised by Smiley. However Smiley was wrong to have trusted Ljcvekto. Very wrong.
Ljcvetko : Torpedoes->Lasers->Fighters
1 Torpedofrigate, 2 Fighterbattleships, 1 Torpedobattleship, 3 Laserdreadnoughts, 1 Fighterdreadnought, 2 Torpedodreadnoughts, 4 Lasertitans, 4 Fightertitans & 2 Torpedotitans.
Smiley : Lasers-Fighters-Torpedoes
4 Laserbattleships, 10 Fighterbattleships, 3 Lasertitans, 5 Torpedotitans.
Smiley had attempted to send his fleets off on an attacking mission, but Vlad had tried to stop his orders getting through. Luckily for Smiley, not only did his counterespionage operations vs Vlad prevent this happening, but the fact that Skanky too was disrupting his communications meant that his whole fleet was ready to face Ljcvetko's attack. This was small comfort as Ljcvetko's ambassadors had just returned from Smiley's HQ with the full OoB Smiley would be using in the joint attack he was meant to be making with Ljcvetko against his enemies.
Ljcvetko Smiley
22 Torpedoes 27 Lasers Smiley takes 22 Hits
32 Lasers 30 Fighters Smiley takes 32 Hits
30 Fighters 25 Torpedoes Smiley takes 30 Hits
Smiley takes 84 Hits and his whole fleet is destroyed while in dock by the evil traitorous attack of his "ally" Ljcvetko, who claims all of his bases. Smiley is eliminated. Owch.
Skanky's and Vlad's fleets could only look on in dismay as the enemy they expected to attack was already part of Overlord Ljcvetko's spreading empire. Without orders from HQ to attack him, the fleets returned to their homes. Spaced's fleets were too confused by spy activies to do anything this round.
Phew! What a round. Everyone was on the go, spying like crazy, breaking alliances and basically ganging up on Smiley. Pure evilness was the victor though. Be careful who you give your OoB to in future...

What about the line Jamski? Just substitute Duke Leto with Duke o'York.

No, you can give two OoBs. Many people have. If the attacking fleet is forced to defend (i.e. spies force it to stay put) it uses the defensive OoB though.
