edit: Look down a ways for more current info. :)
Heya, looking for another player or two or three to play a FAST game. By "Fast" I mean is able to play at the same time usually each day often several turns. That time is between 1900 and 2359 Eastern Time. If you're on during the majority of that time most days then that's good enough for me. Basically I don't want this to be another slow maybe-one-turn-per-day game. I'd also like occasional "blitzes" which would be on Saturday at whatever time is convenient to all - not every saturday, just occasionally, like once a month or twice a month if convenient, where we put out 10-20 turns that day (depending on response time - did one today with as low as 1 minute response time for some turns :) )
Anyways, settings would be something like this:
Standard world (assuming 4-6 players)
Continents, 70% water
Monarch level
No AI's
Random other settings
Any civ is up for grabs
Accelerated Production
Any other options are open for discussion (ie I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm tired
I have 2 maybe 3 people right now, meaning there are 3 to 4 slots open, of which 2 are needed to start the game. I'd love to start it ASAP (Maybe tonight if enough people join in! :)
Please post time availability (regular), what civ you want, and your opinion on anything else I said here. Or, for that matter, your opinion on anything else period. I love off-topics. :D
My availability: 1900 EST to 2400 EST, and a turn 0700 EST to 0715 EST most days. All day Fri+Sat most weekneds.

Hi snoop. I e-mailed you as well. I'm up for it. But I would vote for small maps. And random geography. Personally, I think continents suck in MP. Takes a five player game and turns it into two games - one with 3 and one with 2. May as well play an on-line ladder game. Same applies with 6 or 7 civs. I find continents are OK in SP with a lot of civs, but for MP I would vote for pangaea or islands.
I have a small essay/rant written aboyt this. Maybe I should post it and see what others think.
snoopy369
April 24, 2004, 22:28
Definitely. Anything that makes for good reading material AND a good discussion is good to me. :argue:
:D
Random it is then, unless other people have strong(er) feelings about this. :) I actually like archipelago but I get the idea most people don't like that, which is why I suggest Continents. :)
snoopy369
April 25, 2004, 18:52
Anyone else up for this? I'd like at least one or two more players ... :)
Swissy
April 29, 2004, 13:47
This looks as if it hasn't started so I emailed you. Hope it gets going soon.
snoopy369
April 29, 2004, 22:34
cool, i'll give it another day or so and confirm that everyone who wanted to play a few days ago still does.
We'll aim for at least a turn, possibly two, to be completed generally during the evening but sometimes in the AM as well (not whole rounds necessarily but several turns, since several of us can play in the AM).
So far who I have marked as interested:
Snoopy369 (definitely)
Swissy (definitely)
MFCamillus (definitely)
Smellymummy (maybe)
Beta (maybe)
All of you can play at least some turns during the 1800-2200 EDT time period. MFC, Beta, Swissy, and I at least sometimes also have turns in the early AM time period (likely the order for that would be Me - Beta - Swissy - MFC-SM based on estimated time in the AM).
If you're all still interested I'll start a game tomorrow sometime, I'm off all day tomorrow so I can do it whenever. I will start a game when I do with the following:
Small Map
Random geo settings
Accel. Production *
No Barbarians *
Monarch Level
No AI
Any civ (some of you have indicated preference, if you haven't email me)
C3C 1.22 will be used, since you all have that afaik (Beta, if I understand right you'll be able to fix yours, just takes time you don't have right now, yes?)
* means a setting that's up for debate and can be changed if anyone has objections. Random, small, those are pretty fixed unless we get more players (standard if six-seven maybe?)
And please email me and/or post your emails. My email for those of you who don't know it already (well, probably none of you but Swissy I guess) is:
snoopy369 (shift-2) yahooooooo (daht) com
(ok, I get way too much fun out of figuring out better antispam techniques :) )
snoopy369
April 29, 2004, 22:35

still have yet to hear from Beta or Smelly mummy -- would rather have 4 players than 3... but if I don't hear by this afternoon I'll start it up.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 13:26
k looks like we'll just be 3. I'll start it up presently.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 13:34
k started, 4000bc on to MFCamillus.
How it works:
* Monarch Level
* Random Geo
* Small Map
* 3 players
* Sedentary Barbs
* Accel Prod.
* Greeks = snoopy369, Sumerians = MFCamillus, Byzantines = Swissy (from what I recall you all asked for); in that order.
Good luck :)
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 14:04
:hmmm: Looks like we have a game of trial by scientific progress.

MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 17:56
3650 to Swissy.
Yes indeed. We are zipping along. It is nice to have a game to a point where you can accompish at least a little something with the turns.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 17:58
yep :)
anyone want to make a guess what the randomizer put out yet? I think I have an idea ... :D
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 18:03
From placement and a couple of other things I am suspicious but probably need another 2-3 moves to be sure.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 18:05
3600 sent on. :)
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 18:20
And sent over to Swissy.
May slow down in a few minutes. The races are basically over and the lawn still calls for mowing. I'll be in and out though.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 18:21
no prob :) 9 turns is already the most i've ever had in one day ... heck, excepting last saturday i think it's the most i've had in a *Week* before :)
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 18:30
3550 on to MFCamillus
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 18:36
3550BC to Swissy.
With any luck we can still get a few more in today. I shouldn't be away from checking for more than about 20 minutes at any given time.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 18:38
cool
how were the races btw?
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 18:53
3500BC to Swissy
Derby was wet but the favorite still one. They got a nice bonus.
Busch race was confused in the beginning. Fuel conservation (or when do you run out on pit road or on the track) at the end. It was not too bad of a race though.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 18:56
favorite won? that's odd, doesn't that only rarely happen?? (and was it the one that won the last two races, ie gets a $5m bonus for that plus potential of another 5m at Triple Crown?)
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 19:06
3450 to MFCamillus
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 19:33
On to Swissy.
In the Derby it is not as often that you get an upset. By Belmont you a lot of times will.
Yes. As I said a nice bonus.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 19:35
ahh i see :)
that horse will be very happy I suspect in a few years in the stud farms :D
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 19:53
3400 on to MFCamillus :)
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 20:02
To Swissy
Any horse that can go 7-0 deserves something. It has not been done since 1977.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 20:03
no kidding ... man o war, right? Now it just has to win the Triple Crown and it'll be the topic of dozens of hollywood movies ;)
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 20:06
Actually Man o War was 1920(?)
I think that Seattle Slew did it in 1977.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 20:14
oh right ... i knew that ... :idiot:
next thing you know I'll be asking you how Seabiscuit's doing these days ... ;)
on to you :)

snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 20:27

yes quickly passing everything else we have started even 2 weeks ago.
And approaching a 3 player one that I started 4 weeks ago.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 20:53
and back to you.
I can barely get two turns (sometimes) of my SP game in between ... course, that's because I'm at AD 400 and at war with the indians, but still ...
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 21:05
To Swissy.
I look at it this way. We have a great start that will make the turns during the week not as boring. Or next weekend when I will be traveling and probably down to 1-2 turns a day.
I'm in 3 other pbem games. One gets 1-3 turns a day, the others seem to be timed in weeks not days.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 21:23
yeh ... only one of my other pbem games has more than one turn per day and that's like 8-9 turns a week... much happier here :) Definitely like getting the cruddy turns out of the way now.
Also glad of Accel Production ... not sure how anyone can play PBEM without it, otherwise it's twice as long before anything happens ... doesn't matter as much later in the game where we're just throwing 2x as much stuff at each other, but at this point it helps a lot ;)
Now just wish I had gone with a seafaring civ ... ;) (Not sure why the Greeks aren't seafaring, really. They're really the first seafaring civ imho (or rather the Phoenicians who are essentially greek) ...
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 21:36
To Swissy.
Yes at this moment it would be nice to be seafaring. But as for the Greeks and the Phonecians.... Kind of two different groups (particularly linguistically). There were certainly groups of them that were highly seafaring, but then there were those that were incompetent at sea. The classic Mycenaeans were certainly seafaring (just ask Odysseus)
I think the problem is that the designers looked at the classic Athenian period. Athens and Sparta were not known for naval battles (although the Athenians were not bad) they relied on allies and for some reason US education tends not to talk about Delos, Rhodes, or Illyria. And Alexander and Perseus certainly did not use Naval power. Just the Phalanx. Thus the Hoplite UU.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 21:47
yeh ... realize the phoenicians are quite different peoples but not particularly far away, and likely were melded into the greek culture much like the romans melded various cultures into their own ...
Civ designers definitely focussed on particular periods for each civilization. Byzantines, Ottomans, Russians, even Romans could easily have been very different cultures, but for our limited "standard american education" in history :( Not that history is particularly practical to most people, but at least then people would have an understanding for why they are where they are ... :)
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 21:48
oh yeah, and on to you. :)
MFCamillus
May 1, 2004, 21:54
To Swissy.
If there was one thing that Alexander set a good standard in it was in integrating other societies. That can be seen by the staying power of some of the Hellenistic successor states. It just never ceases to amaze me when I look at a map how far he went and how fast he did it.
snoopy369
May 1, 2004, 22:07
yeh ...
one of the books i read a while back, don't recall exactly which one, was an alternate history where a bunch of people got thrown together from different time periods ... british from the afghan conflicts in the late 19th century, americans from the 1990s, and ... Alexander the Great, on his way back (and within a week of his death). Of course, one of the first things that happens is his advisors are told of his near future, and he averts it ;) They end up in Babylon (as in a thousand or two years prior to Alexander babylon, if I recall correctly) ... don't recall the title, think it was by maybe Eric Flint or one of the other Baen authors. David Drake maybe? Anyways, quite interesting book, especially watching Alexander come to grips with modern weapons (even modern in the "brits in the 1880s" sense of the word).

May 1, 2004, 22:50
Hmm, I think I was wrong about who wrote it ... for that matter I did an amazon search and couldn't find it at all. I'll have to take a look at work tomorrow. (I work at a Borders bookstore, the biggest one on the continent ... should have it around somewhere :) )

snoopy369
May 2, 2004, 00:02
lol
well, after we finished packing our books they came to about 30-35 boxes. By boxes I mean the boxes we use at the bookstore -- about 20 hardcovers, or 35-50 mass market paperbacks in them. :) My GF and I are insane readers, and only overlap somewhat. That, and I get a discount. :)
oh, I'm around for maybe another hour or so. Should be doing laundry, but I think that's going to wait until tomorrow, I'm too tired to go all the way downstairs (well, 3 flights, so it's not THAT bad  )
I'm on til whenever. Once you guys call it for the night, I'll go play some online

Besides, I need to get to at least galley tonight, or i'll be sad that I can't see more of the islands around me!!!
snoopy369
May 2, 2004, 19:56

I agree. Although under normal circumstances I would be drawing the line at about 11 your times (Month end close this week, hard to start tired it is long enough). We'll see how that goes. The Laundry and dinner sounds familiar to my schedule.
Definately need to get to galleys though.

May 2, 2004, 22:51
oh and I remembered that book (well I was embarrased to find out that tho I couldn't remember, one of the new folks in the Lit department could tell me it directly without much thought :embarassed: )
It's by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter, "Time's Eye" or something like that, new in hardcover (well about 6 months old) ... book 1 of 2 I think. Not sure if Clarke actually did any writing (as he's ancient) but Baxter is a great writer in and of himself (Manifold Time, Titan, etc.)

The Greeks cannot wait to pursue their turn once more tonight. They feel that their recent works in the philosophical and diplomatic fields will prove useful when they begin to spread their great culture across the many islands of this world. They feel that perhaps a world where all of its citizens are united under one Greek language will not be hard to imagine.

BTW, swissy, what's your take on what sort of rules we should follow in terms of OOG contact? Any talking before embassies? Map trading, etc.?
Considering the lack of function of the diplomacy system in pbem, you should be able to talk about anything that shows up on your side of the diplomacy pop-up. So that you can hammer out a deal.

By the time you two get home I will be halfway there. A couple of other things this evening but should be back on track.
I have never had connection problems from my In-Laws like I have this weekend. I am definately going to have to find a way to get them a better line.

Looking forward to a great thousand years ahead. :D

Yes but your greates period will only be for the next 700 years, then you will start to be eclipsed by the buildup to Swissy's greatness.
I however will continue to be content with flint weapons and clay tablets.

June 2, 2004, 18:29
Yeh, but you could make a good argument for having had well over 1000 years of dominance (until the next civ comes along, Babylon, in like 2500 or so if I recall).
And about my eclipsing: I'd like to know how many of the Founding Fathers wanted to emulate the Byzantines. :D

Oh, and turn sent on to MFCamillus.
Looks like the game is almost out of the 'growing' stage ... not many more places for my poor settlers to go ... ;) taking cruddy islands on the hope they have uranium in their one hills square now ;)

I would say the new Avatar is actually cooler and definately more appropriate.
Yes the growth is about over. Now we start pretending to be Venetian or Genoese.

June 20, 2004, 23:42
Thanks. :) Venitian? lol. Ever played that game about being the patrician of Venice? Sort of vaguely civlike, except more trade oriented (no building cities, just finding them and trading with them)... don't recall what it was called. But you could be elected pope, i remember that ...

looks like I'm doomed to be on the short end of the tech race due to my NINE turn anarchy. Guess I get to see how well Fuedalism works a s a gvernment. have only one city that can go over 6 pop so I can't mainatin Republic and build all those aqueducts and markets.
This is really a piss-poor map except for the host getting Texas Island...
Turn to Snoopy
snoopy369
July 10, 2004, 19:51
Texas island is a good name for it ;) I had a pretty long anarchy as well, though i definitely can maintain republic with my texas island. Definitely wouldn't have used this map if i had had a look at it ahead of time tho ;) And that's without actually knowing what you have for territory...

Seems every PBEM game I've played I get screwed by the map. You should have seen my island at the start, I've taken out about 40% of the jungles. The only redeeming quality is my island is pretty thin so I have all coastal cities. Good thing I'm seafaring or I'd still be researching ancient techs still. Was this set at 80% ocean? If it was, that was a big mistake, I have found 80% ocean tends to lead to game killing starts for half the players in the game, while a couple get mega-good starts(like multiple cows).

July 10, 2004, 20:03
And I have to say that i do have a pretty significant disadvantage when it came to luxuries -- only 2 of them, and only a single of each ... C3C is serious when it comes to resource scarcity... sigh

I do like the title of Texas island. It sure seems big enough.

rofl yes a few cows here and there... not as good as another game of mine where it seems every other square has a cow in one area, but not half bad either. :)
