View Full Version : the games workshop thread

seeing as it's somehow lacking... i'm going to start one up. anything games workshop goes here. wanna crusify Gav Thorpe? i want intimate details. discuss new minis, tactics and post your own conversions and paint jobs here.

what i'm currently pondering is a forge world purchase. and it's a doosey. should i get a thunderhawk, or a warhound titan?

thunderhawk:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/spacemarines/7.jpg
more pictures. (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/thunder1.htm)

the pinnacle forgeworld model for space marine players. "Armed with Lascannons, Heavy Bolters, Hellstrike missiles, a Battle Cannon or Turbo Laser, and carrying up to 30 fully armoured Space Marine troops, the Thunderhawk Gunship measures 19 inches/480mm long and 17 inches/440mm wide." a good sized model.

pros: i'll be able to use it in a game of 40k. it'll also look f*cking impressive in any display case you'd care to think of.
cons: "The US$ price for customers wishing to place an order by check is $640.00 + $50.00 express UPS shipping to US."

warhound titan:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhound%20pictures/Paintwarhound3g.jpg
more pictures (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/QUATERMASTERS_STORE_TITANS_31.html)

think big. scary. that would be even the smallest of titans. "A extremely detailed model of the Lucius Pattern Warhound Titan 'Sanctus Venator' commanded by Princeps Hagan Raal. This model stands approximately 250mm/10.5 inches high depending on how the legs are constructed. not as large as the thunderhawk... but close.

pros: "The US$ price for customers wishing to place an order by check is $465.00 + $50.00 express UPS shipping to US. " not nearly as expensive by about $175. it'd also look nice next to the phantom titan on the coffee table.
cons: it'd be more or less a display piece. unless i wanted to start up a guard army. i suppose i could do something with my daemonhunters... but inquisitors don't normally get access to titan legions... do they?

so apolyton... here there be games workshop.

OFMG!!!!!!!!!

What lunatic would use titans or dropships in a 40K game? How many points is a Warhound worth ? What could stop it? (other imperial armoured vehicles perhaps, if they don't get slagged first before the WH loses its sheilds.

And don't Warhounds normally operate in pairs...

AAAAAGH!

warhammer 40,000, space. there's a yearly mega battle in new hampshire that i've gone once to. that's where i'd use them... besides... display pieces are always fun.

Yeesh.
I didn't know they had such models for 40K. I have a couple of Warhounds and an Imperator but that's for Epic scale.
Best bet - Make the models up yourself from old bits'n'pieces. Save the cash for the new table you'll need to deploy them on. ;)

Nice marines. Are they Dark Angels?

self biased
January 6, 2004, 04:24
yeah. they are dark angels of a specific army. i didn't like the all green scheme when i first started painting, so when experimenting with second-generation marines, i painted a beakey marine with an ivory faceplate. it stuck, and became the army badge.

as for the gaming table, my roommate used to own a game store here in town, and we've got a full table in the attic, and two in the cellar. complete with terrain.

the titan and thunderhawk... bitz? plasticard? no. that's waaay too ambitious for my skill level... although i might make one of the newer titans to dwarf the phantom... but that's a project for next year.... thinking of which i should go check ebay.

About 3,500 points Eldar
About 5,000 points Guard
About 4,500 points Ultramarines
Epic 40K:
About 35,000 points Guards
About 20,000 points Ultramarines
About 15,000 points Eldar
About 10,000 points Squats
About 40,000 points Titans
WFB:
All kinds of stuff.

Its all painted to about the standard of the pictures here, but maybe more "heraldic" in look than "battlefield" if you know what I mean, on nice green-flocked bases (better than yours ;) ) and there's a stack of unpainted stuff too.
The Guard armies are really huge amounts of figures, almost entirely infantry...

and did you ever think of returning...?
I'd LOVE to, if I had my figures and books here, if I had a set of opponents here, and if everyone was prepared to play on the old rules. I won't buy anymore though.

January 11, 2004, 15:31
 And I thought it wass bad when i had to pay £40 for a Destroyer tank, although that was 40k version 2 rules. Why so much money? I mean sure they're a lot bigger, but over hear you can buy prepackaged 2000pt armies for under £200 ($300).

I know what you mean. I'd love to play, but everyone plays 4th ed rules. I started at 2nd and did 1 game with 3rd (didn't like it as much though) but stopped a few years ago. I had a 3000pt Orc army, but I never got round to painting the 40 gretchen that were part of it.

it's more of the modeling thing for me.... i prefer to labor away at my minis, rather than buy some soulless bits of plastic and lead... painted by some stranger's hand...

4th is out in england? huh... we don't get it here until the end of this year. they're fixing hand to hand combat finally... hopefully they'll bring ramming back, too... tank shock just doesn't do it for me.

for some reason i've gotten it up my ass to convert a land raider: (shown below) into a leman russ tank. i'm currently thinking about turrets for said tank.

ryza pattern turret:

gryphone pattern turret:

Its GOT to be the Ryza pattern turret. The others have too long a barrel length for the trackbase, especially mounted so high. Its a bit more blocky, but it looks more "realistic".

the trackbase is going to be larger because i'm using the landraider as a base... but the vanquisher turrets have those storm bolters, and i think they look silly.

I had a Valhallan Imperial Guard unit. Painted them to look like a variant of communist red guards. They all had red cloaks, 3 Leman Russ', 1 Chimera, and 1 Demolisher. (along with some Ratling snipers)

It was great when my friends who also had Imp. Guard Armies all banded together against my friend with a big a** Dark Angel Space Marine army.......we almost lost. rofl.

i do have a spare commisar yarrick model lying around somewhere (one of the benefits of living with someone who used to own a game store)... i could put a little sign that says "alas poor yarrick, i knew him well!" and put the good commissar's head in hamlet's hand.

the chapter is dark angels. i use the bone facemask on the helmets as an Army Badge, as opposed to coming up with a creative design.

How have you made Serg. Hamlet's under-ams look so good? The arms and L.Claws are "borrowed from a Termi, yes? And the shoulder pads are normal MkVII, but I can't see the join. What did you use?

Raw Materials:
http://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/sgtim.gif
http://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/sgtclwl.gifhttp://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/sgtclwr.gif

tools: pin vice, brass rod, dremel tool, clippers, superglue, various and sundry files, guitar string, and the ubiquitous "green stuff" putty.

1. sawed off right arm just above elbow using dremel. ground down nub for left arm a little.

2. sawed off shoulder pads on lightning claws, and cables.

3. positioned and pinned claws in place.

4. resculpted joints of the lightning claws, and covered the seams.
http://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/sgthamlet03.jpg
http://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/sgthamlet04.jpg

5. drilled a series of ultimately awkward holes and attatched power cables from the claws to the back pac mount.

6. sculpted couplings for the power cables.

**

that's it, really.

Jamski
January 22, 2004, 12:04
 "...and then I just sculpted the couplings... " WOW, that's all I can say. It really looks like a bought model. If it wasn't for the fact that I recognised the parts...

what are your best games, guys?

I have fond memories of laying down enough artillery fire with my Epic 40k Guard army to completely cover my brother's entire army with "pie plates" After that we made an "agreement" that it was only allowed to take 2 regiments of any particular troops, although I "broke" the deal by including a regiment of Squat Mole Mortars and Thudd Guns in the next game. *snigger* The other great memory from Epic 40K was taking out my brother's Imperator Titan with my first shots of the game, before it could fire once. Sweet vortex missiles of love.

okay. i've got twenty marines left. my goal is to be finished with my rank and file before my birthday, march 21st. actually that'll be by the 19th, as i'm going to nyc the 20th. then, i'll finish my rhinos and razorbacks, and start on my heroes. i've got a chaplain started, followed by a lieutenant level hero, and my grand master.

for the lieutenant, i've used this dark angels veteran sergeant:
http://selfbiased.diaryland.com/images/hero.gif

i've removed his head and replaced it with a helmet. for some reason the idea of marine running around without helmets on doesn't sit too well with me. i've also repositioned the chainsword so it looks like he's taking a swing, rather than waving the damn thing over his head like a fairy.

next is the grand master:
http://www.duckblindminiatures.com/alec/vetsarge1-1.jpg
[figure painted by mathew hunt (www.duckblindminiatures.com). used for reference purposes only]

this is a limited edition figure, used for promotion during grand tournaments and whatnot. he comes witha bolt pistol, but like mathew, i've replaced it in favor of a plasma pistol. but i didn't use Cypher's pistol, just a garden variety plasma pistol. i'm contemplating instead of using the antennae that i've become so fond of (and seeing as i've run out) that i'll be getting some servoskulls and model them buzzing around my guy.

On a different matter, anyone else seen the new 40k computer game being developed? Looks pretty sweet. You're supposed to be playing as a warrior of the newly introduced race (Tau?) in an FPS setting and battling against the other races. I don't think all races are implemented though.

Cool, do you always play space marines? What races are the hardest to play in your opinion? Eldar requires that you use mobility to the max I suppose bit I haven't played with for example Tyranid so it would be interesting to know where the different factions differ in general gameplay.

self biased
March 26, 2004, 10:20
i've only played marines at this point. this is a second generation army, too. meaning there will be more marines to paint, to come.

but from what i can tell, eldar don't rely on their mobility as much as say, the tyranids, or dark eldar do. tau are also a very mobile race. the only problem with tau is that your average fire warrior has a BS of 2. guardsmen hit on 3+ and that's saying something.

as for the others... i guess they're still by and large the same, or at least similar. i haven't been playing much lately, although that's going to change as my roommate is going to start playing third edition like the rest of the world. he's exceptionally biased towards second edition, but he wants to play... so, it's not like he's got much of a choice.

sergeant hamlet took about twelve hours to assemble and paint. he is a favorite of mine, as is Chaplain Maynard is quickly becoming.

Damn do some of you spend a lot of money on those models. I always just used Lego men, Risk pieces, a stuffed animal or two for the big things and whatever else I had on hand. Played a good bit of Warhammer (the medieval one, not the space one) with my brother that way.
I almost always played Skaven against his Chaos, and I just loved smoking the giant monsters he always blew most of his points on with warplock jezzels, except for the time when I let him have as many points worth of critters and he made his entire army able to fly

i've just got some odds and ends to finish up. i want to do a librarian conversion, add some more heavy weapons, and finish a squad of landspeeders, and a squad of attack bikes. edit: also new terminators when they come out.

may 2004 - october 2005 daemonhunters. 40 percent completed.
one squad of terminators, one squad of knights in power armor completed. working on the first full platoon, and i plan to do another. need stormtroopers, and to finish my leman russ conversion.

Words fail me SB. I can only repeat myself - these figures are too sweet to game with.

The GK terms are fantastic. I have to admit that the new minatures lack some of the "bulk" that made the old GK models so cool, but they kinda make up for it with the snazzy angles and styling.

Way to go, man! :b:

for thses guys, i had stripped the metal weapons, and used some assault marine plastics i had laying around, half painted. the paint was a little thick in some areas, but i think they came out well enough considering. i also experimented with a new way of doing bone using graveyard earth as a basecoat, then bleached bone, then skull white. i am immensely pleased with the outcome. i just have to remember to keep my paints thin to keep the smooth coat.

Nice job SB. I was a slightly worse painter than you, but my brother was top notch (he had an orc army).

I used to love this game when it first came out, but the 2nd edition rules ruined it IMHO. The army lists I hated and the miniatures, while cool looking, lost the minimalist aesthetic of the original ones. I kept my first edition rules for years and my brother and I would still play the odd game against each other.

When they changed the Eldar to include the silly and overpowered Aspect Warriors, I gave up playing in the community. That's about the same time that White Dwarf became a load of ****.

Nevertheless, on the subject of GW I still think that the original Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is the best roleplaying game ever created. It was simple, yet incredibly flexible and didn't lend itself to power gaming in the way that AD&D did.

Those are excellent.

When I was living in England the local GW branch had some stuff from the Golden Demon awards, and your work is very close to that standard.

You ever try some of their LOTR miniatures? They used to have some really good ones back in the 80s, but the new ones aren't too bad.

I miss the 80s Citadel stuff. They had many amusing miniature. My favourite was the scrollbearer. This poor wizard's apprentice whose face was obscured by the huge pile of scrolls he was carrying.

thanks for the flattery, agathon, but my painting is nowhere near GD standards. what was nice about the early citadel era was that there was a lot of creativity. what was bad was that most armies weren't as unified as they are now with their imagery.

It's certainly near the GD standards of the very early 90s, which is when I was paying attention. I take it that it has become more hardcore since then.Like I said, my brother could probably give you a run for your money, but I don't know many people who paint as well as you.

I guess things are different now then.

That's true about the armies: I really miss the old Games Workshop. I kept the Warhammer Roleplay manual around for years just for the artwork.

Now, a question. Do you have the album "Oblivion" released by Warhammer Records about 12 years ago? It featured Brian May, IIRC.

I remember the Warhammer music releases, back when GW were great.

I really miss the old GW. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was hands down the best RPG I ever played. Its expansive career system ruined me for all other pen and paper RPGs: my favourite character was a highwayman I had (with a pair of silver embossed guns paid for by previous larceny). There's nothing finer than clearing out a Skaven infested dungeon beneath a damned village as a Gamekeeper in company with a Troll Slayer, a Rat Catcher, a Wizard's Apprentice, and a Beggar.

GW should really sue Blizzard for the latter's ripping off of the "look and feel" of their fantasy games. World of Warcraft might as well have been designed by GW circa 1989, except that GW's sense of humour was more sophisticated than Blizzard's.

there is that, but there have been many staff changes at GW as well.

they've re-released warhammer fantasy roleplaying, though. might be worth it to you to take a look.

more an experiment in basecoats, than anything else. the jury's still out as to which looks better, but i'm leaning towards white, myself.
