Well, when you're a game designer working on a project that takes multiple years then `Real Soon Now' IS several weeks or a month. On the otherhand, when you're an overly eager fan then `Real Soon Now' is about fifteen minutes. TOPS. My bet would be that we'll see something in early to mid-October. Now, um... if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go check the Firaxis web-page again... Joe |

The following what was posted at gamecenter.com and perhaps the source of the 2002 'rumour'. quote:
What We Want to See: Civilization III Hasbro Interactive announced Civilization III with great fanfare at last year's E3. Unfortunately, that was probably a bit premature. Civ III is going to happen; however, it's a safe bet that the project won't see the light of day until 2002. One problem is that Firaxis is committed to developing its dinosaur game for EA before it can fully concentrate on Civ III. The other, much larger issue is the mass defection of talent--including Civilization II and Alpha Centauri designer Brian Reynolds--to Big Huge Games. The good news is that, with Reynolds's departure, Sid Meier is actually going to design Civ III. The bad news: we're gonna be waiting a long, long time.

For those of you concerned about the site launch:I'm sure you can all understand that there is a great deal of discussion and coordination that has to happen before we can open the site. There are a lot of people involved (including many folks from Hasbro) who are just making sure everything is copacetic before we go public with the site. Please also keep in mind that as this will be a "preview site", we will be doing our best to address your questions and tell you what we can of the game, but it is not going to be the be-all, end-all of Civ sites by any means. Just bear with us, the first step is always the hardest =) As for this comment:

Now can we all stop bashing Firaxis! They are going to give us a great game. It is hard but we need to be patient (especially me!) It would be nice if they could snap their fingers and out popped a game but it doesn't work that way. (I sometimes wonder if Sid ever wishes he could make a game just by snapping his fingers!) It takes time.I am very happy with Dan's latest update. I am extremely excited about the preview site and for civ3. now if I could just find something to do while waiting for civ3... ------------------ No permanent enemies, no permanent friends. |

Dan Magaha, I'm not sure it's fair to take a photo adding also the boys who take to your team Pizza and Chinese food, too! Great info hidden for every player: that photo is in fact the beta version of CIV III city view. Look at the buildings on the background and at the Citizen list with happy, content, unhappy people, and a bunch of specialist too, mostly entertainer! Look at cloud details too: far more advanced that Black & white or Railroad tycoon 2 graphic engine someone mentioned some time ago. You notice he said NOTHING about the release of the game? And its really hard to set up a web site? What utter cr#p. We've got 12 yr olds here who set up a web site a week. Want us to put you in touch with one of em?As for the photo - look at those dorks. Standing there, sticking their beer guts out, playing pocket billiards and grinning moronically on their daggy pebble roof. Hardly inspires confidence. If I had asked my friggin wife to design this game BY HERSELF it would have been up by now If they can't set up a web site without forming a friggin committee and taking it to the Hasbro board, what is the game going to be like? A camel is a horse designed by a committee!! I am SO ANNOYED about this endless delay. Pull your fingers out!! I think you people are being a little too harsh on the Firaxis team. It is a completelly different matter designing a comercial site and a home website. Not graphically, of course, but contentwise. They must think about the marketing strategy i.e. what to reveale immediatelly and create a plan for updating the site... Frankly, I think they are probably doing their best. On the other hand though, I would at least welcome knowing the date when the website will be posted, so that I can wait for it more patiently. Surely releasing that date can hurt nobody, it's not as if we got the game release date. I think one thing delaying the site is that they want to answer most of our questions on it, but I think it would do for the time being if they just gave us any info, however vague about the game, just give us something. |

I do agree with you Roman. He said it himself, it's a delicate thing to do. One word out in the site and you could spark something bad.BTW, Sometimes (very recently) when I go to www.firaxis.com or /civ3/ It doesn't load. I hope they're updating it. If there are screenshots on it, I'm TOO afraid to look at it. I might ruin it all of myself. I'd really hate that. |

I've just checked the Firaxis site (again) and I found the following changes: NOTHING. I don't think that is THAT hard to build up a site. I think it's something else: they still don't have what to put on the site! They don't have the previews With such a delay with the site, what can we expect for the game? It seems like we have to wait a long, long time for Civ3. |
