A HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF SKEEVE II, APOLYTON XII

  • 150AD - After the death of Sean II, talk of forming the Greek Empire into a mighty republic gains strength. However, a lost ancestor of Skeeve, Apolyton's 2nd ruler, comes forward with a claim to the throne! He has no interest in forming a Republic, and he quickly "eliminates" his opponents who do. After firmly establishing his right to rule, Skeeve II's first order of business is to conduct a great survey of the empire. The survey reveals that our empire is quite weak militarily, and is lagging behind in science. On the plus side, we have the best economy in the known world.

Skeeve II, then lowers wages, increases work hours, and cuts rations in an effort to compete with the world. Excess farmers are removed and put to work in other more productive areas. Scientists are taken off their "Theology" project and put to work on something more militarily beneficial: Alchemy.

Meanwhile, a small army leaves Boston and heads north to meet up with a larger army heading south out of Stuttgart and makes a discovery. 2 American Hoplites are fortified inside our borders! We immediately issue an indignant request to leave our territory at once. The Americans Accept.

Greek Exploration Coracle (The G.E.C. Poisedon), decides to pull out of British territory to avoid angering them. (We met them in 60AD, during the reign of Sean II, Apolyton XI).

  • 160AD - American Hoplites have not budged from our territory, so we immediately declare war and attack with our small army from Boston consisting of some archers and samuri. The result: Victory! A complete slaughter. The American's begin referring to it as "The Boston Massacre". Meanwhile, the army from Stuttgart continues its march toward German territory.

  • 170AD - Skeeve II writes an autobiographical novel of his life and his first 20 years as Apolyton XII. (In other words, nothing of note happens)

  • 180AD - Our small army from Boston joins up with the larger army from Stuttgart to form a 12-squadron army.

  • 190AD - Good news! Greek scientists have unlocked the secret of alchemy! It turns out that you can't transmute base metals to gold, but at least we learned a lot trying!! Our next pursuit is Classical Education.

  • 200AD - A diplomat sent into German territory on a peaceful mission is brutally killed by a German Catapult! This enrages the people and they rally behind the war effort! (Skeeve lowers rations to help them focus on the war instead of eating). A few archers left over from the Boston army make a hasty and unauthorized attack on the German Catapult that killed the diplomat. They destroy it without a loss. Our mighty 12-squad army reaches the outskirts of Frankfurt - poised to strike!
The Americans offer a cease-fire. We accept, since they have already been punished for not removing their troops.

  • 210AD - The Germans retaliate by bombarding our archer army. We lose one, and they fight back, but this time with heavy losses. The great battle of Frankfurt begins! She is well defended with Catapults, pikemen, and archers, but we prevail with the loss of only 1 samuri squad! Celebration rings throughout the land!

  • 220AD - 2 German Catapults sneak up to our isolated town of Allenwood. The Knight & Hoplite defenders make quick work of them hardly breaking a sweat. It turns out that one of the catapults was actually a mounted archer. Oh well, now he's mounted dung. Athens starts building the Forbidden City. Historical documents record that this was started by the Scots back in 60AD. The race is on. Meanwhile, our army in Frankfurt pulls out and heads toward the smaller German city of Dusseldorf.

  • 230AD - Dusseldorf Falls! She was almost as well defended as Frankfurt. We lose another Samuri, though.

  • 240AD - Once again our mighty army heads out from Dusseldorf toward Hamburg. The Scots have nearly completed the Forbidden City. Skeeve sees no way to raise the funds to rush construction, so he abandons the project and Athens starts building a Mill instead.

  • 250AD - Dusseldorf's war discontent sets them off into a riot! A pikeman is rush-bought to quell the riot with some martial law.

  • 260AD - We discover Classical Education! Now we begin work on a top secret project: Gunpowder! 2 Knights from Boston join our invasion force to replace the samuri that were lost in the battles of Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. We're back up to 12 again, and we're right outside of Hamburg!
Meanwhile, our 2-archer army wins a tough border skirmish, but they lose another archer.
Also, the scots build the Forbidden City! Skeeve decides that we will own that city someday.

  • 270AD - The battle of Hamburg! A tough glorious battle - even better defended than Frankfurt, but we are victorious with the loss of only 1 pikeman and 1 knight squad. Meanwhile, GEC Poisedon discovers the city of Seminole belonging to an undiscovered culture - the Native Americans.

  • 280AD - Once again our mighty army moves out and heads toward the German city of Bremen. Skeeve II is quite old now and realizes that he may not live to see the next battle. He contemplates the virtues of a Republic.

  • 290AD - Skeeve II begins delegating authority to a group of people he calls the "senate". There is peace for 2 decades.

  • 300AD - Skeeve II dies at 170 years of age. Apolyton XII's reign ends, but now the kingdom is in anarchy and the people scramble to form a Republic. A promising candidate for President is someone by the name of Phoenixcager. The people recall from history the glorious reign of Apolyton III, and wonder if he's related....

During the reign of Skeeve II, the Greek Empire increased from 12 cities to 15, A population of 946,000 to 1,274,000, and is still unchallenged economically. Militarily and scientifically they are still lagging behind. Though currently in Anarchy; the people are generally content, and some cities are experiencing an era of happiness.

Okay - Phoenix is next!!
(Sorry this was so long, I didn't know what to cut out. I guess I shouldn't have played with a notepad in my hand!)

VivalaCTP2,

The only reason that the governement was changed from republic, to monarchy was because berXpert hadn't yet posted his summary. Thus I assumed (wrongly...I should of checked I guess) we were still under a tyranny.

All that talk about a more fitting government for Sean II (the mad) was a cover for my stuff-up. I did say it was a mistake in my transcript. This is why I am so in favour of Skeeves new rule.

I hope that clears things up...and that we have all learned a valuable lesson...

And No, I tried to Rush bye Aristotle's Lyceum, but we were too poor

Sean.

PS, it turns out that Skeeve is keeping the Monarchy!!!

Redstar: Sorry about that! I didn't read carefully.
David: I read yours more carefully, and your are also on the list for the next game!

Edit: Since I don't want to waste space with another message, I'll just use this edit to update the rest of the gang:

I sent the file to Phoenixcager yesterday. I think I forgot to note the time, but as of this message about 20 hours have gone by. According to the rules he has another 52 hours before the file may be sent to the next player, who I believe is Octavius.

Not sure what you guys playing the succession game do at the minute but I think it would be a good idea to send the save game along with a txt file for the commentary. This way the next player could add to the commentary before sending the game on and posting. This means the next player gets to see what has been done by the players before him, plus its an incentive to write the commentary after playing the turn. Not always possible of course, I realise that but I just thought I'd swing the idea this way.

Not a bad idea there Redstar.
I think we'll leave that up to the individuals rather than making it a rule, but that's a worthwhile suggestion.
It's also a way of making sure the file doesn't go before the summary.

I figured it would probably be a good idea to post a list of the newcomers:

  • 1) tedwright@email.msn.com
  • 2) Mokael - Mokael@aol.com
  • 3) TR|X - mikemcgowan@btinternet.com
  • 4) Redstar1 - david.archibald@btinternet.com
  • 5) David Murray - david@windygates.com

That means we have 15 players for the next game, assuming the original 10 want to play again.
We might actually have 16 because Smellymummy wanted to be in it, but I misplaced his e-mail address.

I hope to get the 2nd game started well before Memorial day. (Sorry, May 28th for those of you outside the U.S... which I think is actually most of you! Dang Ethnocentricity! Hey.. at least my wife is Taiwanese, so I'm not all that ethnocentric, after all. Okay I digress...)

Anyway, this succession game is really a blast.

Yeah, it certainly seems a blast to be involved in! Its given CTP2 a new lease of life for me. Being able to see what other players are thinking when they play the game has given me some new ideas and I've been playing a bit more of CTP2 because of it.

A Chronicle of the reign of Phoenixcager II, known as Apolyton XIII

In the year 300 AD, Phoenixcager II assumed office as leader of the great Greek republic.

310 AD Our advisors reported that 4 cities were on the verge of starvation. Rations are reduced accordingly in the 4 cities. In the same year, the treacherous Germans offer a ceasefire, which we reject, hoping for a chance to conquer more German land.

320 AD We finally emerge from anarchy to the new Greek Republic

330 AD Washington D.C. builds an aqueduct. The same year we launch an attack on the German city of Bremen, and it falls with ease! No losses are reported among our troops.

350 AD Construction starts on a bazaar in Hamburg

360 AD We discover gunpowder! For the 25 turns enemy city walls are less effective! Research on Calvary tactics begins immediately. Our advisors also report that we have entered the Renaissance age.
City wall consruction commences for Frankfort. Our coracle discovers the Native American city of Sioux.

370 AD Caravan production begins in 3 cities in order to improve our trade situation. In the same year we attack and destroy a German catapult guarding the city of Munich. Our coracle discovers the NAative American city of Mohawk.

380 AD Our army retreats to Bremen on discovering an 11-unit force on the outskirts of Munich. A spice trade route is started between Essenheim and Corinth...trade receives a huge boost.

390 AD German catpults spotted near Allenwood...we rush buy a pikeman.

400 AD Our defending force of a knight, hoplite and pikeman attack the German catapults at Allenwood and destroy them. In the process we lose our hoplite unit (may they rest in peace).

410 AD Bazaar production commences in Frankfurt. Our coracle discovers the Native American city of Iroquois.

420 AD Another German catapult is spotted near Allenwood. We rush buy another pikeman.

430 AD Our scientists discover Calvary Tactics. This should be a good boost to our military capabilities. Perhaps victory over the Germans is in sight! The scientists are set to work on Cannon-making. The same year, a Hardwood trade route is set up between Bremen and Corinth.

In the year 450AD, Phoenixcager II goes senile and the council of presidential advisors begin the search for a replacement.

Another great job, Apolyton XIII!
So we have reached the Renaissance!
I know it's early, but I've begun speculating about who will actually get to have the honor of winning the game. The bad part is, if someone trys to achieve the science victory, he probably won't be able to finish it in his turn. Not to mention, that his successor could very well decide to abandon the whole project! I think the end-game is going to be quite exciting.

That means we have 15 players for the next game, assuming the original 10 want to play again.

If there is sufficient interest to get 5 more players, then "Round 2" could consist of 2 games running in parallel. Then we could race to win .
There may need to be a mix-around of players, but that shouldn't matter.

Come on all you people who are reading this, but not posting - PLAY THE GAME WHY DON'T YOU?

Welcome Vilius
I placed your name on the list, that will make you #6.

At this juncture, we are not entirely sure how the succession game will work with Mods. It may be especially difficult to make sure everyone has the same Mod. But, heck if we don't try, we won't know, right?

Our current game is being played with no Mods whatsoever, with the exception of the patch. Maybe we could try one with everyone running Diplomod or Frenzy next.

I'll tell you what... give me a few days and I'll start a new thread and open this to a vote. This way we can get a feel for who wants Mods, who doesn't and then we can form games around those preferences.

- Skeeve
P.S. Why do I need a few days? Because I'm working on my take-home final exam this weekend! Sorry, these things always get in the way of Civin' don't they?

I see phoenixcager has completed his turn. Did we check to make sure Octavius III is back from holiday? Is he playing this round, or abdicating his rule again?

On this note, if a player misses a round-for whatever reason-we should still conider him Apolyton __ . That way, I'm always Apolyton _1...easy for me to remember (And Skeeve is _2, and berXpert is _0, etc etc). It's just easier!

Yes, good idea... and it also allows us to have fun with the story. For example: "As Apolyton XIV steps up to take office, 5 men with knives stab him in the back and Apolyton XV is the elected leader!!"

Okay... so I borrowed a little from Julius Caesar.

I'd be willing to join a new succession game, if you'd have me. I'd consider myself a novice level player. Hope my skill level doesn't effect my being chosen for a new game, I've been playing civ since 5th or 6th grade, and I'm in 17th grade now

You know that e-mail address you sent the game file to? Well it can also be used to find out these sort of things... It should of been done earlier of course, and not neccasirily by you. He did post somewhere, in this thread or the other one, and he did give a rough estimate.

I just checked the old thread. He e-mailed Jonny the file, with the explanation he was on holiday...So, did he say when he was getting back Jonny?

Sean.

PS, of course Octavious III may surprise us all yet, am post his transcript!

After this game is over someone should go back in the thread and place all of the accounts of the game into one new post on a new summary thread. in this way people could go to one place to see the whole account of the game instead of having to search through this thread to find the relevant posts. it's just an idea, so let me know what you think.

Now, now Sean...no need for sarcasm...

I'm sending the file to Jonny with the message to play the turn if Octavius doesn't post within 72hours of 3rd May 11:14am (site's time)

I'll cc a copy to Skeeve just in case.

I probably won't be checking the board/email until Sunday night (this site's time)

Okay, Jackazz and Me-Irate you are both on the list for next game.
Jackazz is #7, Me-Irate is #8. I'll try and post an update this weekend.
(Rather funny names for future Apolytons, don't ya think?)

Wow! This means we would potentially have 18 people!

By the way Mr. Wombat: I still say "Lucky Wombat on a Yacht", because rain or shine it's got to be better than going to the office!

Rhuarc: I was planning to do exactly that! But, if someone else would like the responsibility, I'd be glad to turn it over, 'cause its going to be a lot of work.

The MedMod is really beginning to shake up and is looking quite impressive. My vote is that we have a game using the MedMod. :-)

I am finally back! My post should be up by Saturday afternoon (not tonight due to SATs in the morning, ick). I seem to have bad timing for my vacations... Well, time fill the vacuum of power left after PhoenixCager abruptly died. On to Apolyton Octavius I (I'm thinking it's a bit like "Pharoah," which was a name and a title?)
