In the nineteenth century, I had a problem. I'd explored almost the whole world, but as soon as I, Cunoblein of the Celts, finally started gaining territory, The Sioux, Americans, and Aztecs, from whom I was gaining territory, got extremely annoyed. No diplomacy would quell them, and even my great allienace with the powerful Carthaginians, whose empire stretched from Spain to Korea, From Siberia to... well, Arabia, since that's when they met the Zulus, would not help. Well, the Carthaginians would help, but my alliance with them didn't faze the infiels of the Americas! So, I developed a nice little strategy for conquering coastal cities.
What I would do was load a Marines unit on a transport, and have two battleships accompany it. A bit expensive, but it worked well in the end. When the three reached a coastal city, the transport would wait a square from land, while the battleships snuggled right up to the city. The battleships would constantly attack until the city defenses were gone, and it was, therefore, an easy task to move the transpot in and let the marines take over the town. Thus, the Aztecs, Americans, and Sioux eventually lost all their ports, and therefore could not do what they always seemed to enjoy:attacking my capitol with ironclads. I don't know why they persisted. I was so heavily fortified in my home cities that my units never got damaged, and the ships were sunk. Bright fellows.
Eventually, I had to move inward. Since my civilization of the Celts was particularly affluent, I bought as many spies as I could, then sent them in to incite revolts. Capitols were easily taken care of with my superior military strength. And that was that.
Unfortunately, the Carthaginians captured an American city, and got cocky, cancelling their alliance with me. Ah well, you can't have it all.
