The tale of one lucky city
In a Civ game I was playing I had about 7 number of cities which I had
taken from the Indians and Egyptians. I was the Americans. Slowly, the
tide of battle turned and I the Egyptians and Indians took back 5 of
those cities and were moving towards the last 2 cities, which were on a
peninsula. Meanwhile, the barbarians landed on the other end of the
peninsula and went after the city that was farther away form the Indians
and Egyptians. This was the city of Bengal. The barbarians then built
units and moved on my last city on that continent at the same time as
the Egyptians and the Indians. This was the city of Madras.
Had I not
been occupied with the destruction of the Russians, which required most
of my troops, I probably wouldn't have been in this situation. When the 3
civilizations made their final approach on Madras, I had just finished
mopping up the Russians and was now turning to deal the with the
Egyptian/Indian/Barbarian problem. One of the benefits of having just
finished with the Russians was that I had transports on both sides of
the Russian continent and the Russians had built enough railroad that I
was able to get 8 Mech. Inf. and 8 Armors into transports which were
close to Madras. I sent in the reinforcements as quick as possible
along with a 2 carriers full of air units.
At the time there were only
4 riflemen in Madras and a Stealth Fighter. Madras was surrounded on 3
sides by 3 different enemies and on the fourth side was water and my
approach with reinforcements. I knew that I couldn't make it to Madras
in time to stop it from being taken over and as such I already
considered it a write-off. My mission was to take back Madras from
whoever captured it and to take back Bengal from the Barbarians. I
started moving as many transports as possible to the left side of the
Russian continent to pick up units and take them to the Egyptian/Indian
mainland. My first backup units were approaching Madras and it looked
as if it wasn't going to be a write-off after all. I was beginning to
think that I could get the reinforcements in the city before it was
lost. I was 2 turns from having my forces arrive to backup this under
siege city.
The entire time that they were in transport the cities
defenders were slowly being killed one by one. When I was 2 turns from
reinforcement, there was only one riflemen left in the city. My turn
was over and I watched in horror as the Indians destroyed that last
defender. Amazingly enough, they were unable to take the city because
they had used all their nearby units to take out that last defender. I
figured that the Egyptians would end up taking it, but I was mistaken.
The Barbarians took the city which resulted in my recieving 9 partisans
filling all the open spaces immediately around the city.
While I was
trying to figure out if having the city in Barbarian hands was better or
worse than having it in Egyptian or Indian hands, the Egyptians attacked
the city in order to take it for themselves. They also destroyed 1 one
of my partisans. The Egyptians destroyed all the Barbarian units in the
city, but had to take the some concession that the Indians got, they had
no units left to take the city with. When it was my turn again I took
the city back and put the 8 remaining partisans in it. They held out
for another turn and then my backup units arrived and dealt with the
Egyptian/Indian/Barbarian siege. I was truly amazed by the luck of that
city.
