IT'S A HIT ON PSX
(Feb.27) Civilization II hit the Playstation earlier this year and its porters (Activision) have been basking in the sunlight of praise ever since.
consoledomain.com recently posted their take on the game, and the verdict is good. Really good. Some would say this is merely because CivII is one of a few titles in the strategy genre for the console, and that is even mentioned in the review itself. But, most would agree the real reason is that it's just simply highly addictive (newsflash :)). Reviewer Josh White is a true supporter of the latter belief and has named it one of the site's "Gold Award Winners". Another award for a Civilization title... time to add another shelf to the trophy case!

PATCH ME UP!
(Feb.23) Just yesterday, MicroProse went and updated their Tech Support section with the release of a new patch for users of Multiplayer Gold Edition and Ultimate Civilization Collection. Surprised? So were we.
Nonetheless, we are proud to be one of the first mirror sites for the latest fix, as we were with v1.1 last month. To download, choose your product from the menu below and click to begin:

* MGE Patch v1.2 [US]2.3MB * UCC Patch v1.2 [UK]2.4MB

Again, MPS has made the patch easy-to-use by simply having to extract the archive and double-click on the file icon. We highly recommend that you take a look at the update notes, issued my MPS, at some point before installation.
Documented with is how they have listened to your requests so that now "when you are parleying with another human, you now have the option to hide the extra information about your units and cities from your opponent". As before, those with this patch installed cannot play against those who do not, and vice verse. Our thanks to Jeff for the apprisal.

WHAT HAVE WE HERE?
(Feb.19) 'Alernative' Art For CIVII: FANTASTIC WORLDS? Have a careful look at the photograph to your right, sporting the box art to CivII: Fantastic Worlds. Or is it?

By pure chance, Apolyton's very own DanQ stumbled across a full-page advertisement for it in the November 1997 edition of Family PC magazine and made this most interesting discovery. Given the time when the magainze was in active circulation, this would place it shortly before FW's final release.
Compared to the version we have known to grown to love (or love to hate), the 'alternate' sports a sleeker look in appearance. Notice that the "splash" image is the same that appeared on the cover of both Civilization II and the earlier add-on's, Conflicts In Civilization, cover. It did not make it to the 'final' version.

We emailed MPS recently asking for confirmation on our deductions and anticipate a reply shortly. If it is not what we suspect, then what's the answer? Otherwise, if it is in fact what we suspect, why was it scrapped? Was it a last-minute decision? Something to think about.

While we're waiting, feel free to take a glance at the entire ad by clicking here.

NOT-SO-FAVOURABLE REVIEWS
(Feb. 13) GameSpot has given CivII: MGE a 7.3 (73% equivalent) rating. The breakdown of the rating shows gameplay scored high, with a 10/10, but its sound, value, and the reviewer's tilt dragged it down. The most damaging statement, in our opinion, appears in the first paragraph, and quote: "If this is the best MicroProse can muster at this time to compete with Alpha Centauri and the upcoming Call to Power, then I'm worried about MicroProse's Civ franchise". Ouch! Click here or here to read the full review.

(Feb. 3) Perhaps a little delayed, but we're starting to see some reviews of MGE. CGO gives it 3 stars(out of 5), while Gamecenter likes it better, giving 3 stars out of 4. Don't forget that if you want to write down your opinion on MGE and have it posted on our site, you can. We're always waiting for your articles.
