NUMERO UNO
(April 27, 1999) For the week of April 11-17, 1999, Civilization II: Multiplayer Gold Edition was the number 1 selling PC game according to PCData. It bumped Activision's Civilization: Call To Power down to second spot during the same period. Searching for reason why perhaps? Hasbro is offering a $20US rebate off the purchase price, effectively cutting the cost in half.

SUMMER MAY SIZZLE WITH ToT
(April 26, 1999) We discovered a PC-IGN preview of MicroProse's Civilization II: Test of Time. We were pleasantly surprised with all the detail it has to date! To start off with, the most burning question on all our minds is whether or not it is a new game. Previewer Trend Ward had the following to say on that issue:
"At its core, Test of Time is basically Civilization 2 with upgraded graphics, sound and controls. All of the art in the game has been upgraded from 8-bit to 16-bit, each unit has had animation added to make its movements smooth and convincing and nearly everything, from city boxes to pull down menus have been redesigned to make things as easy on the player as humanly possible. In short, Civilization has been brought into the nineties".

We have heard a lot about the "Fantasy" style world which is reportedly available in ToT; Ward confirms it from playing his beta copy. "First the fantasy world. In this mode you become the commander of one of seven (at least right now it's seven) different Tolkeinesque tribes... you can choose from four different city styles". However, he points out that "this isn't just Civ 2 with pointy ears -- this mode has its own research tree in addition to other major game changes".

Next comes some discussion on the "Sci-Fi" mode. "... operates exactly like Civilization 2, with the basic twist being that this time you're trying to evolve your culture enough so that you can return to your home planet.
... the sci-fi battle takes place on several different planes, each of which has its own particular strengths. Once you have access to spaceship technology, you'll be able to carry on your fight in space while in orbit...

Now, here's something definitely new: ultra-dimensional attacks! "Like Masters of Magic before it, Test of Time will force you not only to command the land, but other layers as well. In fact, the game will ask you to keep up with what's going on four different layers at once - On a standard land map, underground, under the oceans and in the air".

Finally before we get to the abundance of new screens, we feel it worthwhile to mention yet another mode of gameplay: Ultimate Civ (name is likely to be changed before release, according to sources). "... plays just like a game of Civ 2 but opens up an entirely new game (based on the sci-fi tile set) if and when you win the Race for Space. One nice little twist here is that, if you play with seven civilizations, one race will begin the game on the far away planet and will begin colonizing that world as a native from the get go". *Whew*! And you thought 'ordinary' CivII games were long...

The following screens accompanied that review: Description of "Genetically Engineered Integrated Environment" advance (137k); building a new improvement (186k); building options (197k); description of the Psi-brator (54k); city view (183k); a close up (164k); another close up (165k); fantasy map (181k); the first flying machine (178k); moving units (330k); pursuing science research (124k); pre-game race selection (117k); city shields (166k); trade advisor (134k; courtesy CGO); underground view (207k) and last but not least, viewing a unit (108k). We highly recommend these as the article (and subsequently the screens) are dated this month.

INTERVIEW WITH DanQ
(April 17, 1999) More than two months have passed since Apolyton's very own DanQ agreed to an interview conducted by a Russian gaming magazine. Believed to have not been used and never before been published otherwise, his answers are reproduced this week as the 37th Column.

MAC VERSION SELLING WELL
(April 16, 1999) PC Data announced the top sales listings for all categories of software for the month of March. In the Macintosh Games listing, Civilization 2 isn't just in the top 10, but went up from the 6th to 5th position. For more on Civ2 Mac, see (what else?) our Civilization II for Macintosh section.

MULTIPLAYER VERSION 1.3
(April 28, 1999) MicroProse updated MGE/UCC patch v1.3 on April 22nd. You can download the updated file here, or by clicking on the link in the menu to your right. Again, be sure to read the notes from the MPS ReadMe File -- they were not, however, updated from the previous v1.3 release.
(April 15, 1999) MicroProse Technical Support department released MGE and UCC v1.3 on Monday. To make the process easier, MPS has incorporated this update into one file for users of both products; it's 2MB, and you can download it from us here, or by clicking on the link in the menu to your right. Here are the Notes for this version, from the MPS ReadMe File:

  • The Casualty Timeline is now available in both hotseat and single player modes of play. In a hotseat game, this can be used to determine unit losses at the start of a turn.
  • Bribing of units in a democracy now functions correctly in all cases.
  • The chat window and trading windows will now re-center when a player executes the "Arrange Windows" command from the "View" pulldown. This allows the these windows to be brought back into view when they "jump" off the edge of the screen.
  • In a hotseat game, attitude values for a human player towards other players will NOT change while it is NOT that human's turn. They should be adjusted manually in the "Foreign Minister" window.

ATTENTION NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE USERS: If you have a non-English version of CivII multiplayer, do not download the file above, but rather the one found here (also found in the menu to your right).
Behind the reasoning comes a little story. We [ACS] became aware of these patches yesterday, but were uncertain in regards to the nature of part of the contents of MPS' Tech Support section for CivII updates; that is, there were two files available for download and we were unable to concretely differentiate between the two, based on the descriptions provided. As such, we held off posting it until we knew for certain and contacted the source themselves. We thank Jonathan from MPS for his speedy reply to our concern.
"There are actually other versions, localized and translated, that are neither UCC or MGE", he wrote us. "The "all languages" patch [is for this purpose]. If you have UCC or MGE, you need [this update]. Otherwise, [install this one instead]".

    TEST OF TIME FEATURES
(April 7, 1999) MicroProse's upcoming and already anticipated CivII: ToT will feature 3 complete "worlds": not scenarios, but worlds.
They include the 'original' Civ2 world (but enhanced), fantasy and an analien solar system. Each world will have multiple linked maps, and the game overall is expected to have an enlarged viewing area.
Our thanks, again, to Tom of Strategy Gaming for this info... we appreciate it man!

    CIV CAPTURES BRONZE
(April 7, 1999) Ultimate Games has posted what they consider to be the Top 50 Gaming Titles of all time. Of course, what list could be complete without a mention of Civ? The 'classic' Civilization and its sequel, Civilization II, are listed in third spot; SMAC is a distant 24th. In its writeup, UG says:
"Two of the most absorbing games ever created. The breadth of scope that was allowed for in Sid Meier's masterpiece allowed us to conceive, as the title suggested, the whole of a civilisation and become engrossed for hours trying to maintain it, enlarge it and make it more powerful. The fact that the hideous graphics and an engine that really isn't getting any younger doesn't stop these games from being amongst the best and most playable out there this long after their original creation is a testament to the true genius of the essence of the games.".
With Total Annihiliation winning Silver, who robbed Civ of the covetted #1 spot? Half-Life.

    CivII: ToT IS A GO
(April 3, 1999) Two more ToT screenshots have arrived, thanks again to the gang over at Strategy Gaming Online. Both are "sci-fi" in nature: here's the first, and here's the other.
(March 30, 1999) Confirmation from Hasbro/MicroProse has arrived in a timely fashion! As first reported by SG Online (thanks for the mail Tom), Civilization II: Test Of Time has a set release date for August 1 of this year.
Also courtesy of SG Online are six new, never-before-seen screenshots from the game. It is clear from these that the interface has been considerably upgraded since we last looked in on it almost 11 months ago. Here they are, in no particular order: what loooks to be An allien attack (167k); your foreign minister's report (140k); flying around in the sky (151k); your Civ "in space" (114k); gaining tribute from a village hut (128k) and, last but not least, your Civ on Earth (135k).
Tom also informs us that they will be having a full preview of ToT in the coming weeks!

    CIVILIZATION2.COM
(April 2, 1999) Tired of trying to remember the IP address for MicroProse's official CivII site or clicking on the bookmark? Well, here's something that has gone relatively unnoticed: you can now access it all by typing civilization2.com in the Address field of your browser of choice.
Since the IP still takes you to the same place, a reasonable guess is that MPS used it while the domain was being processed by Network Solutions, formerly InterNIC. Unfortunately, this is the only update (can we really call it that?) that's been made to the site in a long while. The proof? Visit the "Enhancements" section for CivII: MGE -- it lists the current Gold edition as being v1.1, released at the beginning of this year. A quick visit to MPS' Tech Support presently hosts patch v1.2, now more than five weeks old...
