NO. 2 OF ALL TIME: PCGAMER
(18 September 2001, 14:58 EST) The October, 2001 issue of PC Gamer spotlights the magazine's Top 50 Games Of All Time listing, the first update to it in more than two years. Civilization II ranked a more than respectable showing landing in the No. 2 spot, second only to Half-Life. Given CivII's age and the barrage of successful, high-profile strategy and non-strategy games released since then, this is yet another testament to the series' longevity and widespread popularity.

If you added up all the man-hours that gamers have collectively sunk into CivII, you could probably have built the pyramids with them, the PCG staff wrote. By far the most addictive strategy game ever devised, Civilization II spans the breadth of human achievement from the advent of religion and agriculture to the pinnacle of space conquest.

On a related note, the original Civilization, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri nor the two Call To Power titles made the listing. -DanQ

    SCENARIO HISTORICAL REALISM
(7 September 2001, 0:05 EST) Historical Realism: Notes on Recreating History in Civ2 Scenarios is a new thesis written by Morten Blaaberg.

I feel that the concept of "historical realism" is sometimes getting in the way of player response, Blaaberg writes. There often seems to be a conflict between presenting events "as they really were", and allowing for player action. Like when you want to implement a historical event at a precise historical time ("if turn=" type of event), it might contradict what the player situation is in the game. Or if you're into applying all kind of historically precise details, like city names, units, etc. in order to really recreate the world at the time, but think little about how the player fits into the picture.

The thesis is well-crafted and detailed, containing some very interesting and insightful ideas about player motivation and historical realism in CivII scenarios.

Thanks to CivFanatics for the news tip. -DanQ

    CULT JOURNALIST FAVOURITE
(7 August 2001, 8:11 EST) Matthew Randazzo IV, an online cult journalist, has revealed his favourite game of all time: Civilization II.

[This game] derives its greatness mostly from its game balance, in the way that its creators carefully built the game to be simple yet endlessly alterable, challenging, and unpredictable. The game is [CivII].

Many years after its initial release, [CivII] is still the best strategy game ever to be released and certainly my favorite game of all time. In the years since, strategy games have grown away from the more contemplative style of the turn-based games into the more frantic real time engines, and the Civilization series itself has continued to evolve, but no game has come close to [CivII]. While more creative, more visually pleasing, and more complicated games have been released, none of them have been able to find the magic game balance of the second [CivI] game.

Our thanks to Guess Who for the news tip. -DanQ

    THE CRUEL SEA
(6 August 2001, 6:01 EST) New scenario of the day, the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Cruel Sea by Nick "Case" Dowling
This scenario simulates the 'Battle of the Atlantic' fought between the Axis and Allied Navies from 1940 to 1944. It boasts all new units, a modified tech tree and extensive use of events.

Secondary file is an update, download it as well.

NO. 22 ON GAMESPY TOP 50
(1 August 2001, 21:37 EST) On Monday GameSpy started posting their Top 50 Games Of All Time, an incredible collaborative effort of all of the network's staff. Today the third of five parts was posted and, to the amazement of at least as many as those who thought nothing of it, reveals Civilization II in twenty-second spot.

CivII improved on CivI by adding many new races, new combat units, and a sophisticated warfare system that increased the realism in combat, GameSpy writes. The new graphical and audio effects also helped to add a greater depth to the game. Civilization II remains an addictive, entertaining, and compelling strategy game.

Geoffrey Zatkin of Verant Interactive had this to say:

I can't think of any game that I played longer then Civilization II -- it was on my "most played games list" for about 4 years.

In a couple of days it will be revealed if any other Civ title made the list, including Call To Power and the original Civilization. -DanQ

    COBRA IMAGES & SOUNDS
(28 July 2001, 13:54 EST) Second new file of the day, a treat for every G.I. Joe fan.

Cobra Images & Sounds by Izmir Cali
What started out as a test to see what CIV2 can do turned into this. I coulddn't find to many good images of other units and babysitting my cousins one day took me down memory lane. Fortunately, two web sites The Cobra Command Homepage and Yojoe.com are full of images (more than I could imagine actually). In this Zip File you find all kinds of action figures and vehicles from the Hasbro toy series GI JOE. But you'll quickly notice they are the bad guys Cobra (since GI JOE wasn't an army but Cobra was...). I have peiced together a modpack. I never got the chance to finish this so everyone is free to do there own thing I just wanted to get these images out there.

I hope all of you that wasted so many hours playing with these toys years ago (and equally as many hours with CIV2 now) enjoy them. If you make any good scenarios let me know!

A total of 1765 whooping KiB worth of downloads, in an Images file and the accompanying Sounds File, both for all civ2 versions. -Snapcase

    ARTURIUS REX
(28 July 2001, 13:38 EST) First new file of the day, Arthurian Britain at war.

    Arturius Rex by Khatchik Panos
Almost a century has passed since the removal of the Roman legions in Britannia to defend Gaul against the Germans. The year is now 495AD a native Gallo-Roman prince becomes Emperor. His name is Arturius and he faces the formidabletask of restoring order to Britannia. The Saxon contingents have rebelled and the Angles and Juteshave decided to settle permanently on the east coast, but they are not going to be content with only that territory! Gerontius of the Dumnoni is Arturius's allyand he too will want to halt the Saxon rebels. Meanwhile the Irish are settling on the west coast of Britain and the Scots, having left Ireland for good, are now established on the west coast of Pictland. The Picts will want to send the Scots back to Ireland before it is too late! Most of the British in the north and west are now independantly ruled. Can Emperor Arturius save Britain from a Dark Age or will the "Barbarians" gaurantee it?

A 419 KiB download. Should work with all versions of civ2. -Snapcase

    CSPL
(26 July 2001, 4:42 EST) New file of the day, something special.

Civilization Scenario Programming Library by Angelo Scotto
CSPL is a C++ library used to access Test of Time memory while Tot is running. You can see CSPL as a new events language very powerful (and complex...) to realize new scenarios, anyway, since CSPL simply modifies Tot memory you can also use it to realize in-game utilities or mod-packs which drastically changes civ game rules. As you can imagine the only drawback is that you need to know a bit of C language to code CSPL programs. (CSPL should be used with Borland C++ 5.5 compiler which can be downloaded for free from borland website)

    A 981k download. For Civ2:ToT. -MarkG

    SWORD OF TRUTH WORLD
(25 July 2001, 19:40 EST) New file of the day, a map...

Sword of Truth World by A. Keren
45x125 map of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" fantasy world. Sort of expanded a bit in the bottom. Includes Westland, The Midlands, D'Hara and The Old World. I've tried to make this as accurate as possible... this must be played as a Flat World.

A 2k download. For all versions of civ2 of course. -MarkG

    WWI - THE GREAT WAR
(24 July 2001, 18:47 EST) New file of the day, a WWI scenario

World War I - The Great War by Jesse Schaden
After the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, the entire continent of Europe became involved in a war of pointless and objective less combat between the belligerent nations of Europe. With the defeat of the main Russian regiment at Tannenburg, the loss to the Ottoman Turks at the Gallipoli peninsula, and the breaching of the German blockade, the war has seemed grim for the Allied powers. Although the invention of the tank, the new Russian offensive, and the repelling of the German attack at Verdun have kept the war from turning entirely in favor of the Central Powers. Each side continues to fight along the stalemated French border, and neither shows any sign of surrender. Will you take command of the Allies and lead an invasion of Germany and Austria-Hungary? Or will you favor the Germans or Austrians and assist them to defeat their enemies on the east and west. Or perhaps take the side of the Neutrals, and decide which is the better choice to ally with? You now control the destiny of one of the greatest wars ever, the War To End All Wars

Only 42k to download. For all versions of civ2. -MarkG

    OLD AND NEW
(22 July 2001, 13:03 EST) Blah blah blah new file, blah blah.....

Old and New by Adam Stallard
This scenario was designed to be fun and interesting.. a new twist on the game, with a "discover a new land" flavor. It has a lot of new features, but not so many that it can't be learned quickly. The pace is designed to be fast and competitive, and although it lasts 200 turns, the single player version can be played in a couple of sessions.

The scenario file is about 1 MB, and there is a patch for creating specialized plague events, which should be installed; also about 1 MB. To install the patch: Copy the files into the CivII MGE game folder, replacing the original files of the same name after backing them up in a new folder.

Old and New has it's own website with additional downloads, screen-shots, and chat excerpts from multiplayer games. There is also a Mac version available for download. I would appreciate comments on the scenario and please rate it after you play it!

Main file is a 1MB download and the same goes for secondary file. Civ2:MGE required. -MarkG

    MAGYAR PATCH
(20 July 2001, 19:37 EST) New file of the day #2

    Magyar by Istvan Gyarmati-Szabo
So, I translated Civ2 to Hungarian language. I have to admit it's not perfect, because I made them a quite long time ago. But maybe Hungarian fans will like it! I translated from English, but write it to French files.

    GREEK COLONIZATION
(20 July 2001, 19:34 EST) New file of the day #1

    Greek Colonizaton by J. Baskin
This is a scenario of the Greek colonization of the Mediterranean from roughly 700-500 B.C. You play a greek polis, or city-state, or Ionia, another ethnically Greek region in Turkey. This is a very open-ended scenario, with no objectives, but standard civ scoring. Reccomendedcivs are Ionians, Corinthians, and Spartans, and reccomended difficulties are King and up, but the full force of unhappiness kicks in at Deity.

A 588kb download, inculding the sounds. MGE required. -MarkG

    AGE OF COLONIALISM - 1680AD
(19 July 2001, 19:15 EST) New file of the day #2

Age of Colonialism - 1680AD by Sebastian Melde
The european powers discovered America and began to colonize it. Which of them will be the greatest colonial power, Spain, Portugal, England or France? Will they conquer Africa and India? What will happen to the Asian peoples? Will the Osman Empire be stopped by christian armies - or will they take over Vienna and threaten the entire occident?

A 34KB download. ToT required. -MarkG

    EXODUS PARTITION 1947
(19 July 2001, 19:11 EST) New file of the day #1

The year is 1947, the United Nations General assembly has just voted for the partitition of Palestine in two states, one jewish and one arab. Finally, after two thousand years of exile, the jewish people will have a country again, in their own land. But the Arabs of Palestine rejected the UN plan. A civil war begins, in which each side tries to gain ascendancy. But the perils to the new state of Israel are just begining. On independence day, while it is involved in the civil war, the regular armies of five arab countries invade Israel΄s territory. Are you capable of warding off the invasion? Can you lead your people through the difficulties and protect Israel? Or do you prefer to command the arab armies and wipe the jewish state of the earth?
