TOP 100 VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME
(4 July 2007, 20:33 | Civ2) Fillabustercartoons has compiled quite a list of lists so to speak!

This collection of lists covers PC to Sega, from Nintendo to Playstation and many more.I`m not the only guy who likes making lists. Over the years, many gaming magazines and websites have made lengthy lists of their own in an attempt to compile comprehensive guides chronicling the best video games of all time. Here is a summary of some of the leading Top 10s, as excerpted from various Top 100 lists.

The Jaded Gamer gave Civilization II a number 9 spot for this 1996 release.

Check out some of the many lists such as IGN which gave the same game a number four slot! -

    FIRST STRIKE II RELEASED!
(20 April 2007, 16:33 | Civ2 | 14 comments) Civilization II: First Strike IIContest of the Cold War giants begins...

Eivind IV unleashes the latest version of his NATO versus WARPAC classic, First Stike!

The time is 1975, where the current world tensions is at an ease, but with developing world events, and one of the superpowers in your hands, this may very well change.

This is a geopolitical CIV2 MGE scenario where you can choose between various nations and superpowers to determine the fate of the world, and the threat of nuclear war is ever present. A lovely big world map with interlocking alliances and `tip the balance` regions to conquer all await the daring NATO/WARPAC player...One wrong move can cause WWIII...!

"Will you be able to deliver the First Strike?"

If large scale war is your thing, check out this new version of a fine scenario! - curtsibling

    ITALIAN WARS RELEASED!
    (15 April 2007, 16:45 | Civ2 | 16 comments) Civilization II: Italian WarsMAN THE CANNONS!

The conquests of French King Charles VIII and the dawn of gunpowder war is the subject of Exile`s new CIV2 MGE Scenario. An epic which explores what was then a fresh epoch of battle...The Age of the Gun!

You are invited to take command of various warring Italian factions in an epic struggle which spans the years 1494-1544. Can you change history and attempt to derail Charles` march on Naples, or will you seek another path to infamy or glory? The choice is yours!

With a delicious selection of graphics by top CIV2 artist fairline, and with design that can only be produced by a master scenario maker like Exile, what we have here is a real classic. The author has pushed the CIV2 engine to the limit in order to give the player a real challenge!

All MGE players are encouraged to download and check out this new ground-breaking scenario! - curtsibling

    DICTATOR 6 PLAYTEST!
    (20 March 2007, 15:23 | Civ2 | 112 comments) Global conflict - Get involved!

    From Curt Sibling:

I have released the `beta` version of my latest CIV2-ToT project, an entirely new version of Dictator, which is my series of WW2 global battle scenario. It features a new map by Eivind IV, units by fairline and myself, and over a year of development.

Take command of the Allies/Soviets/Japanese/Third Reich/Australia/Chinese and blast a highway to total victory with infantry, bombers, battleships and tanks. This version also showcases the new `wargame` style units, with groups of tiny men, instead of the traditional CIV2 large unit infantry icons.

I am looking for people who enjoy WW2 battles in CIV2 to jump in and give the scenario some tests. Playing has already begun, but the more Civvers who join in, the more bugs get slugged!

Feel free to check out this new WW2 epic and leave some feedback. - curtsibling

ACADEMICS: CIV2 AMONG 10 MOST IMPORTANT GAMES OF ALL TIME
(13 March 2007, 22:40 | Civ2) The New York Times and GameSpy report that a consortium of American universities (consisting of Stanford University, University of Maryland and the University of Illinois) have proposed to the US Congress to add a game canon to the Library of Congress.

Henry Lowood, curator of the History of Science and Technology Collections at Stanford University and initiator of the proposal, said: Creating this list is an assertion that digital games have a cultural significance and a historical significance. When this is acknowledged, maybe we should do something about preserving them.

A committee of two game designers, two academics and a game journalist selected the ten most important video games of all time to form the basis for this canon: Spacewar! (1962), Star Raiders (1979), Zork (1980), Tetris (1985), SimCity (1989), Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990), Civilization I/II (1991), Doom (1993), Warcraft series (beginning 1994) and Sensible World of Soccer (1994).

Almost all of the games on this list represent the beginning of a genre still vital in the video game industry. According to Steve Mezetzky, one of the game designers on the committee, Civilization`s balance, opponent AI, interesting victory conditions and constant stream of tantalizing rewards made the game extremely addictive and always pushed the player to play just 10 more minutes.

Lowood announced that the intention of the initiative is to preserve these games in their original form for posterity, but that legal and technological issues still had to be worked out. - Locutus

ONE OF THE 50 GREATEST GAMES
(26 October 2006, 09:20 | Civ2) Sid Meier`s Civilization II has been declared one fo the 50 Greatest Video Games of All Time in a book titled appropriately Game On! From Pong to Oblivion: The 50 Greatest Video Games of All Time that was released earlier this week (available in the US as well as Europe). Written by three British game journalists with 30 years of experience between them (Simon Byron, Ste Curran and David McCarthy), their aim was to write a book which would appeal to a general audience (not necessarily gamers) and give a complete overview of the history of video games, in all its forms and formats:

Sure, it sounds easy, but deciding on the fifty greatest games of all time is as simple as picking the fifty greatest experiences ever, trying to decide if tasting a strawberry is better or worse than skydiving. It’s good that gaming’s so diverse, that there are adventures for everyone, but there’s such a contrast of experiences across the medium. Genres are often impossible to directly compare. Trust us, we’ve thought about this a lot. We’ve had to play a lot of games. We know that sounds tough, but we’re very brave.

The full list of games in the book, which each are described in great detail including screenshots and other illustrations, can be found on Next-Gen here. Civilization II is the only Sid Meier title on the list and in fact together with the original Command & Conquer appears to be the only strategy game. In addition to the book, the authors set up a website where the choices of the authors will soon be open for discussion with other gamers and indeed the authors themselves. - Locutus
