Comparison to the original Civilization.
Here is a brief list of the enhancements of Civ II.
CPU type:
The official system requirements as listed on MacSoft's page are:
Any 68030 or higher with at least 8MB RAM, color monitor and CD-ROM drive. Also accelerated for Power Macintosh.
Also, you will not need to have the CD in your CD ROM drive to play (you'll just play without some of the multimedia) so bring out those powerbooks!
Hard Drive Space:
There are 3 different types of installations available:
- Minimal: 9.5 MB. No sounds, fancy art or multimedia, although these can be read from the CD ROM. The game will work without sounds if necessary (read: Powerbooks)
- Standard: 55 MB. Installs all the files necessary except movies and music. These will be read from the CD if it is available
- Large: Installs all files except music. 435 MB. Select info on this in the custom installer to read something funny!
Speaking of music, the music can be played in your standard CD player! Pretty cool too.
Performance.
The game is optimized for Power PC. It really flies on my PC Pro 210 (OS 8, 64 MB RAM).
The game also plays very well on 68K macs. I have played on a Performa 637 (33 MHz 68LC040) with no complains, although the throne room scenes are a little too slow, so I turned them off.
For slower macs, here are some details on my experience playing on a Mac II si.
Here are some tips for improving performace on slower macs.
A demo version of the game is available, both as a 68 K and a Power PC version, both are about 10 MB each. Although they are crippled (no music/video, limited length of play) they give a great idea of game play.
