-1/Jan. A couple of years after it's first release, Microprose creates a separate, distinct site for Civ2 -6/Jan. The first MGE patch is released -8/Jan. Activision starts an open beta sign-up on Gamespot. 100 fans are choosen out for 23,000! -11/Jan. Civ2 for Playstation is released. Looks like a fast job(especially when it comes to graphics), but it's Civ! -14/Jan. We extend our Alternative Civs section to cover Galactic Civilizations -Mid Jan. CivLeague moves to Apolyton(third hosted site) and gets it's 400th member! -15/Jan. Beyond Alpha Centauri joins Apolyton and becomes our most-wanted SMAC section. -16/Jan. Apolyton and Sidgames hold the First Civers Chat -16/Jan. The TFGC2S files archive is at last on Apolyton. -20/Jan. Version 1.1 of the SMAC demo is released -22/Jan. We interview a legend, Brian Reynolds! -27/Jan. Loki Entertainment Software announces an agreement with Activision to port CTP to the Linux platform. -30/Jan. Romulo Romero along with his civ2 mac site moves to Apolyton as our Civ2-Mac subsection FEBRUARY 99 -All Feruary reviewers love SMAC... -5/Feb. Activision announces a March 16th release date for CTP -9/Feb. SMAC's story is concluded with an extra big 35th Episode... -9/Feb. SMAC released in the US! A week later it arrives in Europe -12/Feb. First SMAC patch("Enhancement v2.0) released, 3(!) days after the release, and 47 days after the release of the demo... -17/Feb. We interview Tim Train on SMAC's graphics -22/Feb. The vote for the 1999 Civ2 Awards begin on HAC! -23/Feb. The second MGE patch is released -28/Feb. The winners of the first Scenario Contest are announced MARCH 99 -All March,, reviewers love SMAC for a second month... -all March,, We post our ongoing impressions from our CTP Beta, until the 30th when we post our final 11-review. The whole feature is 25 pages! -9/Mar. Activision officially delayes CTP for March 30th. It will be the final date -19/Mar. SMAC's enhancement v3 is released -30/Mar. CTP is released, and we throw an (irc) party with some of the developers(and the civers of course!) -30/Mar. The Mac port of civ2:mge is released by macsoft -30/Mar. SMAC captures the #1 position of worldcharts.com -30/Mar. More big news that day, confirmation that ToT is alive and coming in August APRIL 99 -All April. CTP gets good and bad reviews and tops the charts(#1 in the US for April) at the same time... -1/Apr. We hold a chat with Brian Reynolds! -2/Apr. Beta of the ctp map editor is released -8/Apr. Firaxis asks for ideas on something called SMACX... -11/Apr. AlphaLeague, the sister site of CivLeague opens -12/Apr. The HAC vote for the 1999 Civ2 Awards end, Apolyton wins almost every category it is in! -12/Apr. Activision releases world maps for ctp. They are actually saved games though, as the map editor is still in beta. Lots of people are confused and disappointed -13/Apr. We interview John Heinecke(a.k.a Lt John) and mentions something about CTP2... :) -15,28/Apr. Microprose releases MGE patch 1.3, re-releases it(without changing it's version number) two weeks later, and will re-re-release it on May 25 -18/Apr. Our "rate smac" poll gives a 8.6927/10 rate for smac... MAY 99 -1/May PC Format Magazine mentions our SMAC section in it's May issue -2/May We host the forum for an "Alt.Civs" game, Clash of Civilizations -3/May Westlake Interactive agrees with MacSoft and Activision to make a Mac port of CTP. Initial release date is Christmas -4/May William Westwater, you know, simply the lead designer of CTP, writes the first article in the Developer's Corner. When did you see that in a civ site? :) -6/May Wildcard Design talks about an agreement with Activision to port CTP in the BeOs platform! -6/May Hasbro and Firaxis are joining forces according to CGO. Nothing else is known until... -15/May Hasbro/Microproseand Firaxis announced the agreement to work together on Civilization III. Hell freezes... :) -12/May Firaxis receives "The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Strategy Game of the Year Award" for SMAC -16/May We open our civ3 section -17/May The List begins on our new civ3 forums, which in their first days recieve an average of 200 posts/day -19/May 50 days after the release, the first CTP patch is ready. JUNE 99 -1-15/June We run the "Power Up!" contest. Five winners win a copy of CTP and another five a copy of the CTP Strategy Guide. -2/June Activision releases the Sprite Tool. At last creators have the ability(unlike smac) to make their own unit graphics, but the process is bit "user un-friendly" :) -8/June Sven adds the 200th file of our Civ2 Database. We send him 200 bottles of champagne to Germany to celebrate! :) -16/June In our civ3 section, we host the 25-page long archive of The First Civilization 3 Homepage -21/June We open a forum for ToT and one of the deisgners, John Possidente, becomes an Apolytoner :) -23/June The Wildcard Design/Activision deal for a BeOS port of CTP is finalized and official, and some speak about a summer release date... -23/June The Spanish Civ2 Site and A&A join forces to create the Civilization Scenario Collection(which is of course hosted on Apolyton :)), while Jesus Balsinde's personal creation are also hosted on Apolyton as the remaining Spanish site. -24/June We create a separate Stories&Diplomacy forum JULY 99 -8/July SMAC Enhancement v4 is finally here, 50 days after v3... -8-11/July The development of a Mac port of SMAC is announced, and we interview Bard Oliver, the head of the team! -9-15/July Three ToT exclusives: the box cover, the rules.txt and the first modpack! -14/July The first version of The List is finished and hosted on Apolyton. More than 200 (Word) pages of civ3 suggestions! -27/July After a private party celebrating the one year of Apolyton, MarkG drunk tells the truth to Dan that "Apolyton" doesnt really mean "ultimate" in Greek, but "Markos' place"! Dan furious, forms a concipiracy with unknown forces and bans MarkG from the site. He then announces(with his login) that he goes on vacation. He will never return! :) |
