JULY
98
-3/July Kent Wang and Frank Johnson decide to merge
CivLeague and the Civ2 Ladder and Tournament Page to make
CivLeague
-5/July Microprose faces financial problems, closes down a
studio. meanwhile, for thw whole summer, on tfgc2s and
apolyton,
mark hunts down mge release dates.... :)
-mid July Talks between Dan and Mark start to merge the two
bigest civ2 sites. discussions last for a couple of weeks
and for the first time in the hisory of mergers, the only issue is
the name of the site!(not really, but jut to show how
good the communication was from the start :))
-15/July Microprose, activision and avalon hill agree to
settle their lawsuits! microprose gets the rights of the
civilization
trademark, activisions gets a licence to put the civilization name
on ctp
-26/July The merger is announced on both sites, work starts
immediately.
-29/July Official ctp site opens, meanwhile it is a decision
that apolyton will have a separate ctp section
AUGUST 98
-6/Aug. The CTP section is ready
-7/Aug. Apolyton opens it's door for the first time. Tips
page uses the script used on tfgc2s, the MP list is moved too,
lots of pages are reformated, while a new forum system based on ubb
is implemented.
-8/Aug. the first article in the
Column is posted
-9/Aug. Hasbro buys Avalon Hill! Avalon Hill's 30 year
history ends, while Hasbro plans to make pc versions of popular AH
board games
-11/Aug. We learn for the first time about a new civ-like
game, Ancient Prophecy
-11/Aug. Lt John of Activision makes his first post on our
forums
-12/Aug. Hasro buys Microprose! civ2:mge is officially sill
going to be published, but obviously the deal will delay the
release until Christmas
-23/Aug. The CTP general forums gets 100 posts/day and we
created three more forums: Peace&Prosperity, War&Strategy
and Game Engine
SEPTEMBER 98
-all Sep. Mge's release date(several times) and
pricing(once) changes, while Hasbro completes the deal to buy
Microprose
-10/Sep. Activision runs the "castle, throne or..." contest
for ideas of what could replace the throne room of civ2. some of
the winners are Apolytoners :)
-12/Sep. Markos write a preview of CtP(based on what was
known at the time) for Gamecentral
-23/Sep. We start a new tournament, continuing the UCIVIIS
tradition...
-25/Sep. In our first ctp interview, we interview Cecilia Barajas, ctp's
director. Apolyton is the second civ fan ste to do an interview
with a member of development team, the first being Beyond AC. A day
later, Gamecenter, posts an interview of Cecilia too(we got them
first! :))
-late Sep. Sidgames is formed after a merger of 8 civ2
sites
OCTOBER 98
-all Oct. The mge release date goes back and forth(or at
least the date that some gaming sites think it is a the real
date)
-3/Oct. We hold a public
chat with Mark Lamia, the producer, Steve Mariotti, the lead
programmer and Joe Rumsey, networking and game Engine programmer of
the CTP team.
-6/Oct. The "Story of
CivII" by Jaspers is posted. A great piece of civ fiction.
-6/Oct. We interview the Lead Designer of CTP, William Westwater
-15/Oct. Our Alternative Civilizations Section opens! We
cover Ancient Prophecy
and Stellar
Civilizations for start.
-mid Oct. In our Civ2-Hacking&Programming forum(now
dead) a move to create a civ game by the fans starts. a site is
organized, a chat is held. the project will be eventually on hold
due to lack of time
-18/Oct. We chat with three members of the Ancient
Prophecy team
-25/Oct. We talk with Jason Kozak, the man behind Stellar Civilizations.
NOVEMBER 98
-1/Nov. We chat with Ron Hiller, the lead programmer of
Manifest Destiny
-3/Nov. The winners of Activision's contest are announced.
The idea which replace civ2's throne room is at that time called
"Your own Forbidden City"
-9/Nov. Our Civ2
Database goes online! We started with 60 files and we are
currently reaching number 250. That's thanks to the work of several
people, more noteably of Kent Wang, who wrote the script, and Sven
Muencheberg, our Civ2 database manager.
-17/Nov. An Apolyton Exclusive, a source from Microprose
confirs to DanQ that MGE not only exists but is almost at the doors
of the distributors!
-20/Nov. CTP is officially announced that will be delayed
from the initial Christmas release for a spring '99 one
-21/Nov. The Zone opens a room for MGE. The room wont be
very much used
-22/Nov. Activision announces it's plans(which were part of
the deal with Microprose) to create a port of Civ2 for the
Playstation.
-23/Nov. We "score" yet another CTP interview, this time is
Mark Lamia, the
Producer
-28/Nov. The first civ2 Scenario Contest begins
DECEMBER 98
-1/Dec. Apolyton is mentioned in PC Games magazie
-4/Dec. For the first time a civ fan site previews a civ
game. DanQ previews Civ2:MGE. A strange
tradition begins as on the same day...
-4/Dec. Civ2:MGE appears in the stores!
-6/Dec. We hold a second CTP chat, called "CTP Designers Chat",
with 5 members of the development team.
-8/Dec. Scenario League is the first hosted site of Apolyton
which opens it's doors
-10/Dec. CivLeague starts the first Civ2 multiplayer
tournament
-10/Dec. In our Park Ranger poll in the CTP section, 36% of
the voters want it's name changed to Eco Ranger. The future will
show that the developers listened :)
-19/Dec. Brian Reynolds announces that SMAC is finished. The
demo will appear on Christmas day and the game will eventually be
released on February 9th
-24/Dec. Hodadian Award Central is finished and becomes the
second hosted site of Apolyton
-24/Dec. Steve Mariotti, CTP's
lead programmer, answers our questions in our fourth ctp
interview!
-30/Dec. The cow unit in ctp is slaughtered. Fred starts his
"bring back the cow!" campaign :)
