What: Community Involvement Award
Why: Before they were co-owners and webmasters of Apolyton Civilization Site, Markos Giannopoulos and Daniel Quick ran separate Civilization II fansites: The First Greek Civilization 2 Site (TFGC2S) and The Ultimate Civilization II Site (UCIVII) respectively. Giannopoulos ran TFGC2S from beginning to end, and Quick UCIVII for all but three of its months.
Though co-founders of Apolyton on July 26th, 1998, their involvement in the Civ community dates back to 1998: August for Quick, and October for Giannopoulos. In recognition of their work before and 'immediately' after the founding of Apolyton, Giannopoulos and Quick were chosen the co-recipients of the "Silver Fleece Award" at this time by the named site's owners and a panel of judges. Awarding this distinction was "in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the CivII Internet community" to then (and since).
Here is what each said respectively just after learning of their receipt of the Fleece:
When I took over UCIVII back in August of [19]96, I was not prepared for the incredible sense of community Civilization fans already established online. I feel proud to have been a part of its growth since that time, and am very honoured to be chosen [co-]recipient of this month's Silver Fleece Medal.
When I started my first CivII site, TFGC2S, I never thought I would get a medal for doing something like that. My big thanks... for this award. I truly hope this community of Civ sites and people we have created through the years can stand the test of time and new Civ games!
